Sam Shields will receive a comeback opportunity from the Rams, who made the decision Thursday to sign the former Packers standout, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter).
The Rams and Browns hosted Shields on visits, and the defending NFC West champions will see what the former Packers longtime starter has left.
Having struggled with concussions, the 30-year-old cornerback has only played in one game since the 2015 season. Prior to that, however, he was a well-regarded corner that logged extensive time for one of the league’s highest-profile teams. A concussion sustained in Week 1 of Green Bay’s 2016 season stalled Shields’ career. But he expressed intent to return to the league last month and will now receive that chance after being out of football in 2017.
Shields will join a revamped secondary, with Marcus Peters set to become the team’s No. 1 cornerback. Kayvon Webster is returning from an Achilles tear, though, leaving the Rams somewhat shorthanded. They are not expected to re-sign Trumaine Johnson, and Nickell Robey-Coleman is also a free agent.
Best of luck!
Wow, 1 game since 2015 and he was a member of the Packers defense which basically pretty much sucks all the time, using Rodgers to bail them out as they give up tons of points.
What are the Rams thinking?
You clearly don’t know who Sam Shields is.
No kidding he doesn’t. The Packers pass defense went to hell in a handbasket the very game that Shields went out. They haven’t had a CB1 since.
The Packers defense has been hell in a hand basket for as long back as anyone can remember…..back into the Farve years as well.
What league are you watching!
Yes, he is a player that hasn’t played for the most part over the last 2 seasons and is 30 yards old.
And, the Packers have given up lots of points both with him and without him……Rodgers just outscores the other team which is your winning formula!
After trading away 2 regulars from the 2017 defense, this is what makes you question what the Rams are thinking?
I’m thinking they are thinking its a low risk, potential high reward deal.
I wouldn’t quite consider that Shields will be a “regular” with 1 game played in over 2 years.
This is how you take a successful team, start tearing it down because of finances, which is exactly what the Rams are doing, sign “low risk, potentially high reward players with warts, and start losing on a regular basis.
Who said shields will be a regular? I said they (agreed to) trade away 2 of last year’s regulars.
As for shields, this signing shouldn’t even register on anyone’s radar. The Rams already agreed to acquire Peters from KC, correct? So, again, shields is a very low risk signing..probably one they don’t even expect to make the roster.
As well as you explained yourself, I don’t know if the guy commenting at you even deserved a reply. Regardless, your insight is appreciated and your logic is spot on.
So they should just sign high risk guys then? The players who are no-to-low risk, high rewards with no issues aren’t normally available in free agency/come cheap in trades. Low risk, high reward guys (even with an injury history) are the type of signings teams should be willing to make when they are trying to manage their finances. Most teams do it. The only teams who usually won’t are the teams that are completely tearing it down or have young players who they’d prefer to play over the one year prove-it type of deals.
