The Jets have signed Teddy Bridgewater, but he won’t be their starting quarterback. Calvin Watkins of Newsday.com reports (via Twitter) that Josh McCown has been told he’ll be the starter. The veteran quarterback re-signed with the organization earlier today on a one-year, $10MM deal.
While the Jets may be content with who’s atop their depth chart, the rest of the quarterback corps is not as certain. Bridgewater is on board as a backup, but the organization is also considering some of the top rookie options with the No. 6 pick. To complicate matters, the team is currently rostering Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg (as well as Joel Stave). In other words, this isn’t the last we’ve heard of the Jets quarterback situation.
The 38-year-old McCown had arguably his best NFL season in 2017, leading the Jets to a 5-8 record in 13 starts. He finished the campaign having completed 67.3-percent of his passes for 2,926 yards, 18 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. As our own Zach Links pointed out earlier today, wideouts Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse played well with McCown. This means the veteran will likely be tasked with mentoring a higher-profile young passer than the ones he was previously tasked with tutoring.
So Hackenberg and Petty will never play. Typical Jets
Petty has played
Petty played are you stupid he blew. And it’s one more year with Mckown that’s all
Play in the future. Dont call other people stupid if you cant even form a proper sentence. He may suck but its better to try and develop him than play Mccown
Hackenberg must just be truly horrible. Theirs no other possible explanation. He must be a total bust.
And they should have known it when he was coming out of Penn State. Appalling accuracy. You Jets fans should be lighting candles and saying your prayers that management doesn’t make the Exact. Same. Mistake. with Josh Allen this year, another paragon of inaccuracy.
Jets GM is the Goat
The s in jets stands for suck
Actually, it’s just the pluralization of jet. Every team does that with the nickname.
Jazz. Heat. Magic. Wild.
Yes, but that’s a development of the last 40 years.
Baker?
Why would Bridgewater consider signing with the Jets then?
Outside of the Bills and Vikings (which i dont think want him back) where else would he get a better chance at palying especially after coming off that major injury? McCown is 39 and I hope he does just as well this season but its heard to see that unless there are some oline upgrades.
McCown has been on a roller coaster ride the last five years and is “due” for a down season in 2018. Bridgewater is good insurance doe a guy as old and with as spotty a career as McCown. I think the Vikings might have taken him back if they had lost the Cousins lottery to the Jets, most likely backing up Sam Bradford, another guy who needs a good back-up.
Perfect picture to emphasize the headline
This ranks as the least surprising statement of the day.
How do you not play Bridgewater? That guy came into the league at practically the same clip Watson did with the Texans. Similar story of getting a severe injury early on too only Bridgewater finished a season and made a pro bowl if I’m remembering correctly. Why has the league totally seemed to pass him by and written him off as a backup already? He’s like 25 years old.
Teddy’s injury happened later, so he just got back from it (as opposed to his success being after the injury). Also the injury was extremely severe in that it is an injury that could be career-threatening and he won’t be the same afterwards. If I remember correctly, a blood vessel or artery got ruptured or stop blood flow and there was a chance they would’ve had to amputate his leg if they didn’t move quick enough.
Apparently literally had grown men vomiting at the sight.
No one wanted poor Bridgewater so he went to the Jets. Jets management are sure the fans will accept mediocrity because they kept cheering for McCown all last year. Good luck with the table scraps, damaged knees, etc…
