The Eagles have set a sky high asking price for Nick Foles. In order to part with the reigning Super Bowl MVP, the Eagles are telling teams they’ll need more than the first- and fourth-round picks they received from the Vikings in the Sam Bradford trade, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com (on Twitter).

With roughly two weeks to go between now and the start of free agency, the Eagles can afford to set the bar high. That’s presumably what the Eagles are doing here. While Foles is a quality quarterback and arguably a stronger option than any free agent QB not named Kirk Cousins, it’s hard to imagine the Eagles netting such a return for him. It’s also hard to see the Eagles holding on to Foles as their backup given his $7MM+ cap hit and the team’s limited financial flexibility. The likely outcome here is that Foles will be traded and it will probably be for less than what the Eagles are currently asking for.
For what it’s worth, Mortensen reports that the Eagles have received multiple offers for Foles, but they have not been actively shopping him. We don’t know the nature of every offer put in front of them, but we do know that one AFC team has already pitched a second-round pick for the 29-year-old.
Yeah, good luck with that.
Well, he was the super bowl MVP. And also, I think this says more that they aren’t looking to trade him unless someone blows them away. They don’t really have any reason to trade him.
Malcolm Smith was the Super Bowl MVP a few years ago and he’s not worth anything.
The Eagles have a right to ask for a big return and might get it, but no one is giving up a first and fourth rounder for a guy who has yet to prove he can succeed outside of Philly — and that’s not even factoring in that the Eagles have no cap space and he clearly isn’t their long term starter anyway.
They do have Carson Wentz coming off a significant injury, it’s incredibly valuable for the Eagles to hold onto Foles which is why the asking price is so high.
I agree with it being risky for them to not have a suitable backup for Wentz and they have a right to ask for a big return, but given those other factors I’d be surprised to see anyone give that (especially given that there are a lot of alternatives available this offseason)
Smith also had a pick six, fumble recovery, and nine tackles in the biggest game. It’s all about what you do right now. Nick Foles is hot right now. And yes, I’m an eagles fan. Are they “asking” too much? Of course they are. When you buy a car do you take sticker price? You always start negotiations from the highest point. You can’t ask for more after negotiations have started. And remember, this is a report. But still, a first rounder for him isn’t asking too much. Supply and demand. Eagles have a qb and there are too many qb hungry teams. Take his low salary and draft a qb. Doesn’t work you trade him before the deadline.
Yeah and that’s why he won Super Bowl MVP, I just mentioned Malcom Smith because being a Super Bowl MVP doesn’t necessarily mean you’re automatically an incredible player.
I know how negotiation works. Why not shoot for the moon at first? It only takes one team to give in. I even admitted that they have a right to ask for a lot, especially since it’s still early.
But a first rounder and more for him is just insane.
I do think they’ll get a 1st rounder I just don’t think he worth it
Not happening. No team would do that.
Cleveland should offer their second a third and fourth.
Eagles fan?
And some would suggest that you have your meds adjusted.
“We should be able to get 4 first round draft picks, a serviceable backup quarterback and some cookies for Foles!”
– Scott Boras
Depends — what kind of cookies are we talking about?
Lol… wow drinking the koolaid much?
Typical schtick from Philly and other northeastern sports teams. They overestimate the market value of their own players and feel the need to fleece every trade partner they can. Needless to say, GMs around the league aren’t THAT stupid. Nick Foles isn’t worth what they’re asking, and the Eagles will have to come back to earth if they want to avoid his salary hit.
Really, biggest homers I ever encountered were Chicago fans, no wonder it’s called the Windy City.
A late first would potentially be feasible. Would Buffalo give up one of their firsts and move on from Tyrod Taylor?
the 19th/20th is too high for Foles.
Eagles are down to Earth….It’s a high asking price, but they’re not getting a better backup for less than the 4mil they’d save. And with Wentz coming off of injury, they need the insurance.
If they are going to be afraid of Wentz not being healthy, to pass on best offer for Foles they should just trade Wentz to the Browns for the 1st and 4th and 33rd.
Having insurance for a QB coming off a serious injury is different than being worried about Wentz being healthy long term. He was a MVP candidate in his 2nd season playing the most important position on the field,he’s the Eagles long term QB without question.
And Foles won’t be around a year from now. So makes no sense to keep him if you can get a pick out of him. But for cap reasons, you trade him after June 1st for a 2019 draft pick.
Two firsts
