The Cowboys have restructured the contract for veteran tight end Jason Witten, opening up around $3.5MM in available cap space, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. Witten is signed through the 2021 season.
Witten, 35, becomes the second Cowboy to restructure his deal of late, with center Travis Frederick doing so last week. Between the restructuring of both deals, the Cowboys have opened up $10.5MM in available cap space.
The Cowboys were certainly in need of more available cap space, especially with the addition of wide receivers Allen Hurns (two years, $12MM) and Deonte Thompson (one year, $2.5MM). Entering Saturday, the Cowboys had $8.04MM in available cap room, which placed them at No. 26 in the NFL, per Spotrac.
Witten has spent his entire 15-year career with the Cowboys and has been selected to 11 Pro Bowls. He’s the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions (1,152), receiving yards (12,448) and most consecutive games played (239). He signed a four-year contract extension last offseason, worth $29.6MM.
Keep kicking that can down the road . I highly doubt Wit can keep playing until 2021
Yep. That’s been the Cowboy way since their moron owner thought he could be GM: Make a mess of the cap and just kick it down the road so they can excite their fan base before training camp a little bit.
They’ll never truly compete until Jerrah is dead. Yeah. I said it.
Romo comes off the books next year, and probably Dez, too. Can also get out of Hurns deal easily next offseason. They’ve actually been a lot more responsible with their cap management over the past 4-5 years. No one should try to get into the position the Jets, Browns, 49ers, etc. were in this offseason, because it would entail years of sucking. I’m actually hoping they get a deal done for Martin so they can add a safety, CB, or DT before the draft. Barring a bunch of injuries, or some catastrophic regression from Dak, they should be one of the best teams in the NFC next year.
lol. nope.
Dude some of you people are delusional and don’t understand or even follow the game correctly .. and you can’t keep your bias feeling about teams out of the overall thought process of how good or bad they actually are… the fact that the cowboys were 9-7 last year with a suspension to their best player should give you a ideal that they can definitely be a lot better this year.. they won’t have as tough of a schedule as the first place schedule they had last year either.. get a decent gaurd and Tyron Smith comes back healthy with Zeke for a full year I can easily see a 2-3 game improvement that would mean 11-5 or 12-4 ..
Btw they just signed Fleming the starting RT from New England.. he will take over the RT for Collins and moves him back to RG that right there puts that line back where it was in 2016. They also still have 10 picks in the draft .. so I just saying I wouldn’t be surprised to see improvement at least 2 more wins
