Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel threw passes at Thursday’s University of San Diego pro day, and 14 NFL clubs were on hand to watch him perform, reports Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
The Bears, Browns, Chargers, Giants, Chiefs, Jets, Patriots, Raiders, Titans, Lions, Jaguars, Panthers and Buccaneers, were all present at today’s workout, per Williams. Of course, those clubs weren’t necessarily in town just to see Manziel, as USD had its own prospects on the field.
Manziel was thought to be interested in working out a deal to play in the Canadian Football League during the 2018 campaign, and was in fact offered a contract by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in January. However, Manziel and his team reportedly weren’t pleased with the terms of the pact, and he’s now scheduled to play in the upcoming Spring League. The former first-round pick is reportedly amenable to a minimum salary or a practice squad slot.
Manziel is still only 25 years old, but he hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2015 campaign. In eight career starts for the Browns, the former Heisman trophy winner completed 57% of his passes for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
If the Jets or Browns sign him, they’re idiots. If New England signs him, they’re geniuses. At least that’s how the pundits will react.
Well it wouldnt be smart for the Jets considering they signed two QBs already and are going to draft another. But i get the point youre making
The press heaps praise on to teams like the pats and only acknowledge savvy moves by minor market or less popular teams after the fact.
Unfortunately they’d be right though…the Jets and Browns have had a lot of personnel turnover and a major shortage of supporting talent for a QB to thrive…especially a young, talented but severely immature QB like Manziel…if Belichick signed him and tucked him away under Brady, it would be pretty smart…it would give him the ability to learn from the best in the business and if and when he was called into action he’d be on the field with a perennial super bowl contending team
I watched Manziel every week in Cleveland. Say what you want about his supporting cast, dude isn’t very talented. Worst than not being talented, he’s not a smart player. There is under no circumstance ever that he would lead a team to a super bowl.
I think it would be dumb for any team to sign him.
Pretty sure the Browns weren’t there to watch Manziel. It was a college pro day.
That would be a shocker wouldn’t it?
Give the kid a chance.
Oh, because the numerous ones he’s had already weren’t enough?
yawn
Browns were there? SMH…
Espn said the Browns weren’t present as only 13 teams say him throw
Manziel is pretty much the current poster child for, “Wow, those people who said there could be consequences for my actions were really, really right…”
Why would anyone be interested. Can this guy just fade away.
I’m guessing that the punch line to this headline is that the other 18 teams went to the San Diego Zoo believing the QB prospects there were better than Manziel.
The lions must have got lost looking for a Rashad Penny workout.
I guess it’s ok that guys like josh Gordon get more than 2 or 3 chances but not manziel right?
I guess it’s ok that guys like josh Gordon get 2 or 3 chances but not manziel right?
Josh Gordon is an all world talent and proven at the NFL level, he just can’t stay clean. Manziel hasn’t proven much at the pro level.
Would love to see him in a Pats uniform for a year, get his head straight, and then sign with the Cowboys
14 teams watched and 14 teams said “No Way!”
Not all that surprising. No team wants to get burned with Manziel the way the Bears did when they paid Glennon 18mil for something like 268 snaps.
There’s no risk of that if it’s true that “The former first-round pick is reportedly amenable to a minimum salary or a practice squad slot.” I think they’re more concerned about his sobriety, maturity and mental stability than about the money involved.
Dallas, thank you for calling him “former NFL quarterback” instead of “former Browns quarterback”…I’ve been one of the people who doesn’t like that articles still always refer to him as a Browns player so I appreciate the change
unhappy with the terms?
Johnny Man….just go away.
Maybe I will come out of retirement and give it another go.
And if you’re 25 and still physically capable of playing professional football, go right ahead, sir, and more power to you.
Maybe its time he signed with Padres. They did draft him, afterall.
Who would you say is better, Manziel or Tebow?
I’d say Manziel is more skilled but I would rather have Tebow on my team
The headline is incredibly misleading. Two players from San Diego had a pro day, not Manziel. Scouts came to watch those players. Manziel just happened to show up to throw the ball around and somehow it was spun as if he was the one holding the workout. Get your facts straight.
