Jerry Jones‘ stand against the NFL hasn’t abated in recent days, and the saga has reached enough of a boiling point that several other owners have discussed a “nuclear option” that would force Jones to forfeit the Cowboys franchise, a source tells Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
According to the league’s bylaws, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell can decide an owner has acted in a manner “detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football” and assess a $500K fine. However, if Goodell decides further punishment is in order, he could pass the case on to the NFL’s Executive Committee, which could then force the “cancellation or forfeiture” of a team, per Florio.
While the option exists, the concept of the league forcing Jones to give up control of the Dallas organization is unlikely to occur, according to Florio, especially because the outcome would likely be lawsuits from both parties. But Jones has certainly done his fair share of harping against the NFL over the past week: he’s not only threatened to sue the league, but insists owners are being “misled” on the details of Goodell’s proposed contract extension.
Jones may have also affected the business of the NFL and its sponsors, as owners reportedly believe Jones convinced Papa John’s owner CEO John Schnatter to blame the league for not only decreased ratings, but a downturn in Papa John’s sales. That Jones took “family business outside the family” could potentially push the NFL’s other owners to their breaking point, per Florio.
Love it. Jerry Jones deserves to be humiliated just the way he did Tom Landry. Jones pulled him off the golf course and fired him in front of Landry’s son in a construction trailer…on Father’s Day…as I recall. I was a life long Boys fan…but stopped that day. He is the biggest a-hole in sports. Suffer!
First off, you won’t find a bigger admirer of Tom Landry than me. And yes – Jones could have done him better than he did. But get your facts straight.
He tried to meet with Landry and had been attempting to contact him all day. He found out he was in Austin to play golf. He went to Austin and had to track him down. Landry knew what was coming but chose not to honor Jones’s request. Landry was never a bad guy, but that is a fact right there.
Additionally, he did not get fired on Father’s Day. He was fired on February 25 and I️ believe Father’s Day is in June. Whether Landry’s son was present or not – no clue. But everything you commented was a myth.
I’m not a Jerry Jones fan nor a defender of his. But I️ agree with him on this issue. Goodell has way too much power and is using it to ruin the game. He’s inconsistent in his punishment discretion and is trying to be the NFL dictator. He should not be judge & jury. The Ezekiel Elliott case is exactly why. No evidence, lying witnesses, a confirmed plot to extort money, the only person to interview the alleged victim even suggested no punishment, no criminal charges filed. And they gave him 6 games? There was far more evidence against Ray Rice even before the video came out and he only got one game initially.
Jerry Jones is a jerk, but I️ think he’s right on this one.
Wow. Goodell is playing hardball.
All things equal, Goodell is equally guilty of the same charges.
The NFL continues to implode. One owner said (and I’m paraphrasing) that with suspensions, player behavior, declining ratings, protests and conclusions, no one is talking about the games anymore Goodell wanting $50m a year is obscene, considering the state of the league and its players. Owners speaking publicly on internal matters is discouraging. The league is in real trouble, and it is getting harder and harder to care.
i wouldn’t put much stock in the gossip website pft.
The NFL needs to band together and finally get rid of Jerry Jones and family and all of Jerrys followers and coaches. Just clean house the cancer has to go NOW. And give Nolan Ryan the chance and George W Bush a chance to actually own the Cowboys. Then we can and will get back to Cowboys football winning ways
Maybe Mark Cuban should buy the Cowboys
only to have to sell them when he runs for president? that would be poor asset management
His son will take over
Jones acts like a petulant child and thinks all roads lead to Dallas. The Cowboys recent past history is nothing but mediocre especially when he was making draft picks.
He is a delusional loser!
Who owns the team that’s worth the most in the NFL…while I dislike Jerry, this seems very unlikely.
I️ mean it depends on what you mean by recent past history… they had the best record in the NFC 2 out of the last 3 seasons
“Any publicity is good publicity” seems to be Jerry Jones’ model.
Dana White is in the wings waiting to set up goodell vs Jones for a ufc matchup
The league would cutting its nose off to spite its face if it did this. Forget about how you feel about his politics, or his persona, or his coach management and GM skills, etc. Just look at his history as a businessman in football. He revolutionized running a sports franchise and is a big reason why the NFL became so successful. If you look at all the ideas and changes he brought to the league he is unmatched. All these owners are a lot richer than they would have been if it wasn’t for him.
This isn’t like getting rid of Sterling who had no redeeming human qualities and was a leech on the NBA. This is getting rid of a key guy. It would be like if baseball forced George Steinbrenner to sell the Yankees back in the day. Haven’t people noticed a lot of this fighting between owners has been about which owners have the most power? The other owners can say whatever they want but don’t mistake what this is really about. Owners who want more power are seeing Jerry vulnerable and are making a move, even if it hurts the league overall.
File this under things that will NEVER happen…
Can’t we be rid of both Goodell and Jones?? Any half-brained monkey can be commish and sell the Cowboys to somebody else.
Triplets , prime time and Rodger dodger buy the cowboys and start winning with trouble free players not convicts
As an Eagles fan let’s have them swap places. Let Jerry run the 3 ring circus of the NFL and have Roger run the Cowboys into the ground.
I would love for this to happen
Jones is an ego maniac. HOF is a JOKE. Hasn’t won anything in 19 years.
Funny how the rest of the owners stood back and watched this asshat make a fool out of himself. Seems they taught him a lesson.
You gotta admit, nobody is more qualified to talk about acting in a manner detrimental to the welfare of the league than Roger Goodell. He is hands-down the world’s foremost expert in the matter.
