The Jaguars are placing offensive tackle Branden Albert on the reserve/retired list. Albert, who flip-flopped on retiring this week, was previously on the “left team” list.

The change in designation theoretically allows Albert to play for the Jaguars, but that’s not what the team has in mind. The move essentially means that the Jaguars are not interested in his services right now and, barring something unforeseen, we won’t see him suit up for Jacksonville.
After Albert informed the Jaguars of his retirement on July 31st and had a change of heart on August 7th, there was some question as to whether he would be welcomed back. It seems that the Jags are moving on rather than carrying out a deal that had non-guaranteed base salaries of $8.9MM in 2017 and $9.6MM in 2018.
If Albert stayed retired, the Jaguars reserved the right to recoup $3.4MM in signing bonus money from him. It’s not immediately clear what the Jaguars can do in that regard or whether they’ll come after those dollars.
In 2016, Albert registered a career-worst 42.2 overall score on Pro Football Focus. He also missed four games due to injury. In his healthier years, however, he vacillated between above average to very good.
If Albert is out of the picture, we’re likely to see rookie Cam Robinson at left tackle.
This dude has been such a headache for the Jaguars
Seems straightforward enough…he wants to retire, but they want to take back his money, so he “un-retires” in the hopes that they cut him. Don’t see why the Jags would refuse…does nothing to their cap, and they didn’t pay the bonus money in the first place.
His money?
It’a the signing bonus money that’s in question and it comes from signing AND playing.
Not signing and retiring.
They traded a pick for him AND his contract……good or bad.
So it’s their right to the bonus if he retires…… not the Dolphins.
Why did they even trade for him?
Cause they couldn’t know the future maybe?
Obviously if they knew this Cat was such a head case they wouldn’t have.
But they wanted to move on from Julius Thomas and had hopes that Albert had 1-2 more good years in him.
All I can say is it’s a good thing Cam Robinson fell to them in the 2nd round!
Love the way Jags are handling it, u don’t wanna play 4 us…..fine, give us “our” money back !!! Sends message too team…..Jags need to shake losers like this guy!
I’m really confused how this guy has been such a headache. All he wants is more of his contract guaranteed. Can you blame him? It’s a very dangerous game. If I’m not gonna be well compensated to get my brains and body bashed for a crappy team, why do it at all? Surely you’re not on the side of the billionaire owners here?
This isn’t his rookie contract, so he had control over his earning power. He signed this deal a few years ago (when he was a free agent and a few years younger); he knew the risks involved at the time, and he still agreed to the contract. I agree that it’s a dangerous game, but nobody ever forced him to play. I’m of the mindset that if you agree to a contract, you should honor it…so he should either play under the terms of the deal or retire and stop being a headache.
