Prior to signing his one-year contract with the Redskins, wideout Terrelle Pryor gave the Browns one last chance to sign him, reports Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Last week, Cabot reported that Pryor never went back to the organization to see if they’d match, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
The reporter notes that the Browns had reduced their offer the second time around, prompting Pryor to take Washington’s $6MM offer (plus a $3MM signing bonus and $2MM in incentives). The receiver ultimately wanted to stay in Cleveland, and he was holding out in hopes that the Browns would increase their four-year offer.
While the Browns wanted to keep Pryor, they weren’t willing to meet his demands. The team was willing to hand out a long-term deal worth around $8.5MM annually, but that compromised the wideout’s flexibility. Considering his desire to stay in Cleveland, we can assume that he would have given the team a hometown discount. However, the annual salary clearly didn’t meet Pryor’s requirements for a long-term deal.
The receiver had also received offers of $10MM and $11MM, according to Cabot, but the 27-year-old had no interest in locking himself into a long-term contract. Rather, Pryor preferred to hit free agency next offseason and fetch a contract that approaches $15MM a season. Pryor also didn’t accept those early offers because he intended to stay with Cleveland, but the Browns’ unwillingness to budge led to him signing with the Redskins.
Consistent play at quarterback would presumably boost Pryor’s value in 2018. Despite playing with five different quarterbacks last season, the former signal-caller had a breakout campaign. He finished the year with 77 receptions for 1,004 yards and four touchdowns.
Mary Kay………confusing as always.
All these one year contracts just prove that these WRs know that if the team they chose starts to fail, they can be traded and used as rentals for contending teams. If the Eagles slip by the deadline, I’m sure they will receive plenty of calls about Alshon. Same with Pryor and the Skins. Smart choice by these wideouts.
or they tear an acl and sign for league minimum
Exactly.
Well not as much what the team will do, he did a 1yr because these offers are from him playing WR for 1year, if he puts up good numbers after this season he can get paid
Brad I doubt any FA signed a one year deal with the idea if being traded in the middle of the year to another team with another offense when they are trying to rebuild value. Nice try
This is so typical of the Browns. That organization is run so slipshod.
The kid wants to stay and they can’t work out a deal.
Honestly they weren’t being dumb, they said this was what they were willing to offer, Pryor didn’t take it so they signed Britt to it instead. Since Pryor didn’t take it, they decided that they were not going to sign him since he walked away from their best offer which then they quickly gave to their top WR free agent target. Smart move by the Browns not an idiot move.
I hear what your saying, but saving $$$ makes no sense when they just paid $16 for a 2nd round draft pick in the Otsweiler deal. That would’ve actually paid for almost 2 seasons of a productive WR in Pryor.
They obviously didn’t view Pryor at that salary though, plus we don’t know exactly what each set their hard line at. IMO, the second round pick is more valuable than Pryor long-term because they’ll get a player on the rookie scale and weren’t going to compete next season anyway. Stick to the rebuilding plan. On top of that, they shelled out big bucks for Zeitler which was a smarter FA play.
So, if Pryor had wanted, say, $15M per to stay, you’re saying the Browns should have worked it out, no matter what?
Mary Kay should honestly not be used as a source anymore. Everything she publishes seems to be a lie.
Makes me think she’s being used as a misinformation stooge…….because everyone knows she’s gullible.
I would have liked to see the Bills in on him. They need a WR like a blood transfusion.
Willing to take on 16m for a 2nd round pick. Not willing to spend 20 M for 2 years of their only WR last year.
Smarter than most orgs
Why do we assume Pryor would’ve signed off on that? Plus they aren’t competing next year and likely not in ’18 either, so it does no good inking him to a 2 year deal.
I’d take this report with a grain of salt. As it states, she said just a couple of days ago that Pryor didn’t give the Browns a chance to match, and then completely discredits herself by saying he did. Which report is true, only Pryor and the Browns know. But I’d be reluctant to trust anything Cabot says. This is the same reporter who claimed the Browns were definitely going to take Trubisky with the first pick and then a week later said the Browns were in love with Garrett and were going to take him. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s making up rumors or people are purposely giving her false information to report because they know she will.
That says it all.
This has already been proven to be false. Pryor and/or his agents never went back to the Browns and gave them the chance to match. Sounds like Pryor’s agents are using her to spin a story for damage control so they don’t end up looking like they cost their client a bunch of money
He should’ve never let them know he wanted to stay in the first place cause they were just fishing I’m at a lesser number hoping he would take the bait
ever heard of english? if so, want to give it a try next time?
