The Redskins are placing the exclusive franchise tag on Kirk Cousins, the team announced. He’ll play on a one-year, $23.94MM deal, unless the two sides can agree on a longer deal between now and July.
The exclusive tag means that other clubs cannot negotiate deals with Cousins. Under the non-exclusive variation, teams would have been able to sign Cousins to an offer sheet. An unmatched offer sheet would have resulted in a deal, though it would have meant the forfeiture of two first-round picks to the Redskins. In most cases, teams do not pursue non-exclusive tagged franchise players, but Cousins would have been an exception given the lack of quality available QBs out there.
Today’s news does not preclude the Redskins from trading Cousins, which has been a rumored possibility for some time now. The 49ers have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for the QB and, depending on who you ask, that may be the only trade he’s willing to help facilitate. The Browns may also show interest in Cousins as they try to figure out their future under center. Cousins does not have a no-trade clause, but he can effectively block any deal by refusing to negotiate a long-term deal with a new team.
In his two years as a starter, Cousins has helped the Redskins to plus-.500 seasons – including a 9-7, NFC East-winning showing in 2015 – while flourishing statistically. Cousins is coming off a year in which he completed 67 percent of passes, nearly reached the 5,000-yard mark (4,917), and tossed 25 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. This past year, Pro Football Focus rated him as one of the ten best QBs in the NFL.
I kinda hope he stays in Washington, they need a QB like him
Long term*
The lack of faith in Cousins from the Washington FO is very real. So real that they are willing to pay him 24 million just to only be tied to him for another year.
Washington has to mack a choice give him a long term deal or trade him.
No they don’t. They don’t have to do anything. He is now required to play on that deal.
Yes he has to play on a one year deal but the skins have to choose whether to extend him or trade him before then or lose him for nothing.
Where do we begin and where do we go from the relationship that has developed between Cousins and the Redskins. The front office looked like geniuses when they tagged him and the Redskins started the season 0-2. Then they rattle off several wins, he gets cocky and slaps the GM and a “how do you like me now” against a Packers team that was playing poorly at the time. Then another reversal when all they have to do is beat a terrible Giants team and your in, and you choke. Now with no other real viable alternative you are forced to pay a tremendous amount of money to an unproven QB. Not sure I see a trade to the 49ers and here’s why. Yes Shanahan wants Cousins. He went to bat for the guy in the 4th round and got him drafted. Now Shanahan is in San Fran and needs a QB. But the team is a total mess and has loads of work ahead of him. Why trade a draft pick and sell the farm when you have so much work to do. It’s going to be another terrible year. Wait until next year and sign him as a free agent and risk nothing. It is highly, highly unlikely that the Redskins would franchise him again next year. So as intriguing as it may be, I see him staying in Washington for another year, they draft a quarterback, and next year Cousins goes to San Fran.
Woah woah woah, just because they have him the tag doesn’t mean he has to play, he doesn’t have to sign it.
I don’t see what team would want to pay 24M for an average QB it’s a shame that he’s making that much
He likely will sign it, he just won’t sign it right away so the team could try to work out a long term deal/trade.
But it’s not his fault he’s scheduled to make that much. The Redskins’ could’ve had a cheaper cap hit if they tried signing him to a contract. There is little reason for him to take a significant amount less than $24 million unless he gets a good (for him) contract. Because basically it’s either let him go to free agency, pay him the $24 million franchise tag, or try to work out a long term deal (but any hometown discount is basically out the window as he’s going to be seeking security since the Redskins clearly don’t value him as a long term option).
Essentially he has a lot of control beyond this year. Washington should be highly motivated to sign him long term in order to avoid having to make a choice to tag him a 3rd and final time next year at $34.47 million. That would be a crippling amount for any franchise to take on and is likely not even an option. Cousins for his part will be overpaid in a long term deal but he and his agents know they have all the leverage barring injury at this point because there isn’t a quality replacement available.
Detroit could be in a similar situation with Stafford next offseason but in all likelihood a deal will be worked out this summer making him the highest paid qb for a short period of time.
I agree though that the qb market is super inflated but it’s just the nature of the ever expanding salary cap and positional importance. 2 things get a qb paid. Wins and stats. Talent is great but if you can’t produce one of those other 2 things then the talent is considered wasted. Cousins has put up stats well and has gotten some wins along the way so he will get paid very well. It’s just how it goes and it’s simply part of the business.
I don’t understand why the just didn’t sign this guy long term a few years ago.
Who is this guy Kirk? Why are they always talking about his cousin?
