The Chiefs have finished with a winning record in each of their four seasons with Alex Smith under center. However, the team has only made three playoff appearances, and they’ve been incapable of advancing past the divisional round. As a result, the Chiefs may be looking for a change, and there’s an obvious name that they could pursue.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Chiefs have been looking to upgrade the quarterback position following their playoff loss to the Steelers. The writer suggests that the organization could end up going after Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
“It was noteworthy when Andy Reid was non-committal to Alex Smith,” Rapoport said. “They’ve made a QB trade in the past, doing so for Alex Smith. They’d have to be considered someone who would be a possibility.”
The connection between Romo and the Chiefs isn’t very surprising, as Romo listed Kansas City as one of his “favored destinations” (along with the Broncos, Texans, and Cardinals). If the Chiefs did somehow acquire Romo, it’s unlikely that Smith would be part of that swap or any other trade. Rapoport notes that the Chiefs would likely cut the veteran quarterback, which would leave the organization with $7MM in dead money. The 32-year-old has two years remaining on his contract, and his 2018 cap hit is projected to be north of $20MM.
Smith threw for a career-high 3,502 passing yards this past season, but it was an otherwise typical season for the 11-year veteran. Smith’s 67.1-percent completion percentage, 15 touchdowns, and eight interceptions were generally on par with his career numbers, and the Chiefs once again ranked towards the bottom of the league in passing offense.
Of course, Smith still put up better numbers than Romo, who sat out the majority of the season with a back injury. The 36-year-old ultimately appeared in one game this season, completing three of his four pass attempts for 29 yards and one touchdown. With the organization opting to build around Dak Prescott, Rapoport notes that the veteran quarterback is open to a trade. However, the writer also reports that Romo is still considering retirement.
Stop with these inane reports regarding the Chiefs interests in Romo. They have ZERO interest in acquiring Romo.
Thanks for the insight from inside the chiefs front office Wayne
Haha
Gotta agree with Wayne. There is ZERO upgrade from AS to Romo. Probably even a bit of a downgrade. This makes no sense at all. The Chiefs aren’t THAT stupid.
A healthy Romo is easily better than Alex Smith. Not even close
Chiefs are smarter than that. ROMO will be on IR in 6 weeks. Atlanta beat the NE CHEATERS.
How the hell do you know
Give me break… Romo is not an upgrade at 36. Smith has started just as many Playoff Games as Romo (6). Smith has won just as many Super Bowls as Romo and played as many (0). There completion pct is nearly the same in the playoffs and there yardage is eerily similar. Romo fumbled without ever being hit at the goal line when he had his chance and it has haunted him since. One thing that stands out his his age and games not played due to injury. This is all speculation and I don’t see the current organization building such a young team in hopes that Romo will become Iron Man after his injury-prone career. No Chance
Thanks for the heads up Wayne. The Chiefs front office will be interested in ANY player who will help them win games…
And u know this how? Are u in the organization??
That was for Wayne btw
Why would you want to take a broken down QB when you have a very good one already
Who are you the KC Chiefs GM?
I agree completely. There’s not a chance Dorsey goes after an older, injury-prone QB like Romo–he’s not Carl Peterson, folks, and actually cares about the future of the franchise. And for all the jerks here giving Wayne a hard time for his opinion, go f*** yourselves. You contributed nothing to the debate and can only argue by making fun of someone else, like a mentally challenged third grader. So piss off.
You sure contributed a lot
Hey Wayne’s a pretty reliable source lol
It’s not the quarterback. Their wideouts are bad, defense is old, and their line isn’t all that great.
AS is a middling QB incapable of leading them to where they need to go. Get Romo AND draft a QB early.
Other than DJ and Hali, the defense is not old. Houston and Ford are both mid 20s, Berry and Parker are 28-29, all others on the D are under 28 years of age!
Almost there entire defense are 1st rounders and pro bowlers. How is there defense bad?
They could use some improvement on their receivers, but I wouldn’t call them “bad.” Did you not see Tyreek Hill?? Jeremy Maclin not as good this past year though. Their defense is not old, don’t know where you are getting that from.
Exactly. Start with some maulers in the offensive line. It helps both the run and passing game. Then say a prayer every night for Andy Reid to stop throwing so many bubble screens 🙂
Finally. How obvious has it been to anyone watching that a Smith led team cannot win it all. If the goal is to just be competitive every year then keep him but if not take a risk that could win it all for you
Butchered the article, from the get go. Alex has led the the Chiefs to the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years not, “a pair of playoff appearances” in four years. Until this dude starts losing I’m okay with him as my QB. Never been a stat freak, what’s more important, winning more and more games until we get a ring or blow are cap load letting go a winning QB on the chance that Romo who mind you wouldn’t dream about taking off down the field anymore can somehow fight off his recent injury stint? Dude needs to retire before he can’t play catch with his kid. But what do I know I’m just a CHIEFS fan in cowgirl country, texas.
Anyone who doesnt think Romo is an upgrade over Smith is either insane or has no Clue
What is out there though? What QB could they get that is actually an upgrade over Smith (and please don’t say Romo, people)?
There’s no upgrade option on the FA market. Romo is for a team that has absolutely NO other option. What is enticing about a 36 year old, broken down, injury prone, and proven choke artist? Haven’t the chiefs had ENOUGH of these loser QBs over the years? The ONLY people who think Romo to KC is a good idea are Oakland, Denver and SD fans. Lol. This is just stupidity and lack of stuff to write about.
I hope the Cowboys get a future first for Romo. He’s worth a while more than Sam Bradford.
KC has the percect upgrade from Smith already in House, Foles!!! Let smith go or trade to the Jets or the Bills, then you renegotiate JC contract, he is too old and not productive enough at his age due to injury, resign Berry to a long term deal, Get Johnson a new restructured deal along with Hali, and then you Sign poe to a long term deal. Start advancing Bray so he can be a quality back up. Draft, draft, Draft. Foles in his lone starting season had 28td and two TWO interceptions, to me thats one hell of an upgrade from Smith,Just have to restructure his deal too. Its possible but I really dont thing that going after Romo is a risk that is necessary to take. He is too fragile, and with KC line they need someone that can take a hit.
*Perfect
Go back and watch Foles in Preseason and the one game he came in and finished for Smith and the jags game he started, he did very well and seemed to have great Chemistry with Hill and Kelce, he goes down field a hell of a lot more, he just is not as mobile as smith, which IMO does not matter, I think Smith is a good qb but his reluctance to go down field hurts KC too much. Conley Maclin, and Hill are not bad wideouts, with a better qb they along with Kelce would be like a well oiled machine, something they have not had since Green was the qb.
Oh, I forgot, I dont really see how Dallas is getting anything more than a third rounder for ROmo, too old and no durability, good as he is, durability is key here. No one will take a chance giving up a pick that high for an old veteran that has squandered most of his chances in the playoffs, be it his fault or someone elses, he has a lesser win percentage than SMith for gods sake.

If the Chiefs are rumored to upgrade at QB I bet their plan is to go younger and not older so whoever thinks they are going to sign Romo is a complete idiot
From a huge Chiefs fan… Alex is cool, but we will NEVER win big with him. Meaning playoffs or Super Bowl. This was our chance to make AFC title game, held steelers to all FGs and he did not get the job done. I tweeted the Chiefs last year begging them to draft Dak Prescott…. we all see how that turned out. If we don’t go for a veteran, let’s draft Maholmes out of Texas Tech
