Now that Tom Cable and Josh McDaniels have each dropped out of the 49ers’ head coaching search, Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is the last man standing and is fully expected to be offered the position. However, Shanahan is not a lock to accept the job, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter links), who notes that an upcoming meeting between the two parties could play a key role in Shanahan’s decision.

Shanahan will reportedly discuss potential general manager candidates with San Francisco management during his second interview, and the 49ers are now narrowing down their list of executives, tweets Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Seahawks co-director of player personnel Trent Kirchner withdrew his name from the search earlier today, but four other candidates — Brian Gutekunst (Packers), Terry McDonough (Cardinals), George Paton (Vikings) and Eliot Wolf (Packers) — all had “strong” initial interviews, reports Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
According to Barrows, Kirchner believed that he and Cable were being used as something of pawns in order to drive Shanahan’s contract demands down. Shanahan does have tremendous leverage, as La Canfora adds (Twitter link), and would certainly be in high demand as a head coach in 2018. But the 49ers job is his last chance to land a head coaching gig during this hiring cycle, as every other vacancy has been filled.
If Shanahan does turn down the 49ers, San Francisco would truly return to square one. Outside of Cable and McDaniels, every other coaching candidate the club interviewed (or had planned to interview), including Doug Marrone, Vance Joseph, Sean McVay, Sean McDermott, and Anthony Lynn, has been hired elsewhere.
Shanahan, would be very dumb taking that crappy job.Would take too long to build that Franchise up. Not Many good pieces to work with.
plus If falcon’s don’t win the SB this year, They will be A favorite next year, because they will devote their draft to defense, and probably pick up a key free agent. So 17 looks like A very good year to be A Coach for the falcon’s!
We were ready to run Shanahan outta town last year. I think he takes it regardless.
WHY can’t you say the 49ers played games with Mike Shanahan instead? Thank you
I know Jed York is a loser but a lot of people forget that the 49ers are one of the best franchises in history right up there with the Patriots, Steelers and Cowboys. It is not a bad job. Yes it could take time but with a new GM and cap room they could rise up quicker than people think.
Were is past tense. If you eat fish you will have a fishy stinking breath. Mr. Jed York have been eating a lot of fish for the last three years to the point his stinking breath ran Jim Harbaugh out of town.
The present tense tells me that Mr. Jed York’s bad “breath” has made the 49ers not as attractive as once they were. Mr. Jed York will have to show/sell Mr. Kyle Shanahan his absolute support and faith. Mr. Jed York is a winner if he succeeds hiring Mr. Kyle Shanahan. Mr. Kyle Shanahan will NOT be a loser if Mr. Jed York fails to hire him.
So your plan would be stay as an OC instead of building something as the head man. You must really suck at life.
Steelematic:
Please follow the 49ers FO. The CEO Mr. Jed York is 36 yo. He lacks a lot of leadership and humility. BTW he does not have an MBA. Tell us how many 36 yos CEOs are successful?
I am a retired military man. To attain flag officer’s(generals and admirals) status it generally happens until the officer is at least 45 yo. A flag officer is considered a CEO.
Thank you
I feel like I woke up this morning and suddenly the 49ers were being run by the Browns.
I guess you guys at pfr are lucky they can’t announce the deal they made last week so you can report nonsense for another two weeks
I will be very amused if Shanahan turns it down. Just when you thought the niners hit rock bottom… maybe they should just see how the players manage themselves next year without a coach; can’t be much worse.
Lmao
Hahahaha
If all don’t go well why don’t we just sign old man Schottenheimer what could it hurt.
I don’t get some people. They say he would be stupid to take this job because if the last few years. Stupid. They have some draft picks, a ton of money and a few pretty damn good young players to build around. This is the ideal spot for a gym and head coach because they get to build the team the way they want and if it doesn’t work then it’s on them but if they are as confident as they should be they should know they’ll be able to make this into a winning team with everything that is being handed to them. If someone is afraid of this situation I do not want them running the team anyways. We need someone who knows what they are doing and that is not afraid of building this thing up pretty much from scratch.
If Shanahan doesn’t take the job, then the 49ers may have to settle for another Tomsula-like not at all good coach, again. Does this remind us of the hiring process for the last two years? They could have had Adam Gase, but turned him down for Kelly. Look how that turned out. Do the interviewees just get turned off by York, so they refuse to come to the 49ers? This is so frustrating, embarrassing, and puzzling, that an historic formerly winning franchise can’t get good coaches, good players or possibly GM’s to agree to work for the 49ers! Why would Shanahan want to come to the 49ers if the other guys won’t? He’s got a good job with an excellent playoff team, which if they don’t win it this year, will still be great next year. Why would Shanahan want to leave that and possibly a better chance to win a SB? I’ve got an unsettling feeling about all of this, including the GM hiring! The 9ers need some hires with winning experience, and maybe especially the GM, for knowing which players to draft, trade and/or sign!

If the Atlanta Falcons lose next Sunday we’ll definitely know something Sunday night, at the latest by early Monday PM. If Atlanta wins then we’ll have to wait until the day after the SB.
Mr. Jed York must know that this is a blessing to have the chance to land a potential young coach. If he blows it then might as well call Eric Mangini or Lane Kiffin.
Marty Morningweg?

Your infomercial does NOT belong here. Your grammar and spelling are just as atrocious. Go back to grammar school and learn English.
I would run from this job and maybe reapply two or three years after chip kelly ruining(running) another franchise is fully over.
