Ray Ray Armstrong

Browns To Re-Sign LB Ray-Ray Armstrong

Ray-Ray Armstrong is heading back to Cleveland. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo tweets that the linebacker is set to re-sign with the Browns. It will be a one-year deal worth $2.25MM.

Armstrong has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted out of Miami in 2013. After spending about a season with the Giants, the linebacker was released by New York back in October. He ended up landing in Cleveland, and he proceeded to compile six tackles in nine games with this new club.

Armstrong is only one season removed from a 2017 campaign where he collected 64 tackles, one sacks, two passes defended, and two picks in 15 games with the 49ers and Giants. He’s lacked consistency throughout his career, but some stability could help him build off that 2017 season.

The Browns could certainly use some depth at linebacker. The team is currently only rostering five ‘backers in Genard Avery, Joe SchobertChristian KirkseyD’Juan Hines, and Xavier Woodson-Luster. While Armstrong shouldn’t be relied on as a starter, he’ll provide the team with some solid depth in 2019.

Giants Place Cody Latimer On IR

The Giants made a slew of roster moves on Tuesday morning. The club signed wide receiver Bennie Fowler and promoted linebacker Ukeme Eligwe and cornerback Grant Haley from the practice squad. Spots were opened for them after the Giants placed wide receiver Cody Latimer (hamstring) and linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong (concussion) on IR and waived cornerback Donte Deayon

As Latimer exits, another former Bronco takes his place. Fowler now has a chance to become the fourth player to catch passes from both Peyton and Eli Manning, following Latimer who achieved that milestone on Sept. 16. Fowler has 56 receptions for 598 yards and five touchdowns for his NFL career. He’s perhaps best known for the two-point conversion catch he had in the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 victory. That play also went down as Peyton Manning’s final career pass attempt.

The Giants, who are desperate for a spark, will look to improve upon their 1-5 record when they face the Falcons on Monday night.

Giants Claim LB Ray-Ray Armstrong

Waived by the 49ers last week, Ray-Ray Armstrong will make his way to the Big Apple. The Giants submitted a successful waiver claim for the linebacker, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Armstrong played in 10 games for the 49ers, including the team’s win over the Giants earlier this month, before being cut. He started in five.

With the Giants, he’ll join a linebacking corps that’s struggled with injuries. B.J. Goodson‘s been plagued by maladies throughout the season. He missed Week 12 with an ankle injury. Big Blue also has J.T. Thomas, Keenan Robinson and Nigel Harris on IR, where Mark Herzlich has resided since Week 1.

A former Raiders starter, Armstrong made 53 tackles and recorded a sack during his 49ers tenure this season.

49ers Waive LB Ray-Ray Armstrong

The 49ers have waived linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters, including Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports (Twitter link). The move was made to clear a roster spot for the return of Tank CarradineRay-Ray Armstrong (vertical)

Armstrong, who received a two-year extension in December, had been relegated to primarily playing special teams after being supplanted in the starting lineup by Brock Coyle in early November. The team leader in snaps at linebacker with 532, Armstrong saw the field for just 14 snaps in Week 10 vs. the Giants.

With emergence of Coyle and first-round pick Reuben Foster in recent weeks, there just wasn’t any room in the linebacker corps on a Niners team looking toward the future. Armstrong ends his tenure with San Francisco with 53 tackles and one sack on the season.

49ers Extend LB Ray-Ray Armstrong

The 49ers announced that they’ve signed linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong to a two-year extension, locking him up through the 2018 campaign. Armstrong hasn’t played since late September after suffering a pectoral injury.Ray-Ray Armstrong (vertical)

“Ray-Ray had a strong offseason and was off to a good start in 2016 prior to being sidelined for the season due to injury,” said general manager Trent Baalke. “He has continued to work hard in his rehab and is a young player with a bright future in front of him. We look forward to his continued development and contributions, both on and off the field.”

San Francisco claimed Armstrong off waivers from the Raiders in 2015, and the 25-year-old went on to play five games with the Niners last year. He was re-signed in March 2016, and had posted seven tackles, two passes defense, and one interception through two games this season before succumbing to injury. Originally a Rams undrafted free agent in 2013, Armstrong figures to return as a key special teamer and depth option in 2017.

Extra Points: Dolphins, Cards, Jags, 49ers

The 7-4 Dolphins have won six straight and are on pace to make their first playoff trip since 2008, and the team’s players insist that rookie head coach Adam Gase has a lot to do with it. Many members of the team “love” playing for Gase, they told Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post. “He’s different. He’s … different,” backup quarterback Matt Moore said of Gase, 38, the youngest head coach in the NFL. “I think when he does talk to guys, both offensively and defensively, he’s got something working for him that resonates within guys.” Gase referred to the culture that existed in recent Dolphins regimes as “nonsense,” while longtime Miami defensive end Cameron Wake revealed that observing some past teammates’ commitment issues was “100 percent” difficult to digest. “He gives you the leash, gives you the rope,” stated left tackle Branden Albert. “If you mess it up, then he pulls it, and I think that’s how it should be. For the most part, guys have been good about not messing up.”

More from around the NFL:

  • Even though he relishes working under Bruce Arians, Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin‘s “end all” goal is to become a head coach, he informed Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com. “I think B.A. has groomed me, kind of like he groomed Todd (Bowles),” said Goodwin. “Every year he’s given me more and more responsibilities. Obviously I get to see him work every day, how he handles the team, the administrative part of it. I think it’s helped me grow a lot.” Goodwin interviewed with the Buccaneers for their head coaching vacancy last winter, and the Cardinals’ status as an elite offensive team likely helped him earn consideration. Arizona has fallen off this year, though it remains to be seen if that will hurt Goodwin’s chances of landing a promotion during the upcoming offseason. Notably, Arians – not Goodwin – calls the Cardinals’ offensive plays.
  • Sunday’s matchup between Jacksonville and Denver might seem relatively uninteresting, but not to Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall. The Jaguars chose Marshall in the fifth round of the 2012 draft and ended up cutting him three different times before he joined the Broncos in September 2013. Marshall hasn’t forgotten about his inability to stick with the Jags. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” he told Cameron Wolfe of the Denver Post. “The scouts, the executives, some coaches, some players, there’s a lot of people still back there from my time. That gives me a little extra push, a little extra umph. It puts a little extra sauce on this game.” Latching on with Denver has worked out wonderfully for Marshall, who signed a sizable extension with the Broncos over the summer on the heels of a strong couple of years – including a Super Bowl-winning campaign last season. He ranks as Pro Football Focus’ 16th-best linebacker out of 85 qualifiers this year.
  • Of the 49ers’ 17 players scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency in the offseason, the team should try to re-sign six – defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey, tight end Vance McDonald, linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong, wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, and quarterbacks Christian Ponder and Thaddeus Lewis – opines Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. Armstrong has a fan in defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil, who gives the 25-year-old “two thumbs up,” but the coach’s uncertain future could affect whether the defender returns, writes Barrows.

49ers’ Ray-Ray Armstrong Done For Season

The 49ers announced that inside linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong will be placed on IR with a pectoral injury, as Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. Armstrong suffered the injury during the Niners’ Week 2 loss to the Panthers. Ray-Ray Armstrong (vertical)

San Francisco claimed Armstrong off waivers from the Raiders in 2015. The linebacker and special-teamer made headlines last year for illegally taunting a police dog before a game against the Steelers. Police alleged that Armstrong lifted his shirt, pounded his chest, and barked at a police dog before telling its handler to let it off the leash. He theoretically could have faced third-degree felony charges for his actions but, ultimately, the Alleghany County sheriff and prosecutor did not pursue the case.

On the field, the Niners were happy with what they saw out of Armstrong in five games last season and he was retained this spring prior to the free agent perior. In the season opener against the Rams, Armstrong notched his first career interception as San Francisco rolled to a 28-0 victory. Now, the Niners will have to replace him on the depth chart.

Minor NFL Transactions: 3/8/16

It’s been a day of huge news around the NFL, with top free agents like Malik Jackson and Kelechi Osemele reaching contract agreements. We don’t want to let some of the smaller deals from around the league slip through the cracks though, so let’s round up Tuesday’s minor transactions….

  • The Panthers have agreed to terms with Joe Webb on a new two-year contract, according to his agency, SportsTrust Advisors (Twitter link). Webb provides Carolina with a third quarterback on its depth chart, and can be utilized as a versatile, all-purpose weapon elsewhere on offense and special teams.
  • The 49ers have re-signed linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong, extending him through the 2016 season before he reaches free agency, the team announced today. San Francisco claimed Armstrong off waivers from the Raiders in 2015 after the linebacker and special-teamer made headlines for illegally taunting a police dog before a game against the Steelers.
  • The Colts announced today that they’ve signed undrafted free agent long snapper Forrest Hill, in what probably qualifies as the exact opposite of a “splash.” Nonetheless, Hill could be given an opportunity to compete for the job this summer in Indianapolis against incumbent LS Matt Overton.
  • Jaguars tight end Nic Jacobs has signed the one-year ERFA tender he received last week, the club announced today in a press release.
  • Seahawks defensive tackle A.J. Francis has also received his ERFA tender, per Dov Kleiman of RantSports (Twitter link).
  • The Seahawks waived defensive tackle Jesse Williams, according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports (on Twitter).
