Ravens Host Carl Lawson, Efe Obada

As the Ravens prepare for the post-bye portion of their schedule, they find themselves on the lookout for depth additions along the edge. A number of free agents are receiving a look.

Among the veterans Baltimore is interested in is Carl Lawson. The former Bengal, Jet and Cowboy recently took part in a workout, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic notes. Lawson has 89 regular season appearances to his name, including 15 with Dallas last season. After seeing his contract expire in the spring, the 30-year-old was not linked to any interested teams through training camp or the first month-plus of the campaign.

Another veteran edge rusher on the Ravens’ radar is Efe Obada. He is among the players being hosted today, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. Obada has played 80 games split between the Panthers, Bill and Commanders; he posted between four and 5.5 sacks each year from 2020-22. Like Lawson, the 33-year-old would be expected to take on a rotational role in the event he signed with the Ravens.

No area of Baltimore’s defense has lived up to expectations so far in 2025, and the unit’s struggles have contributed to a 1-5 record. In particular, a lack of pass rush production has been a sore spot. The Ravens have recorded just eight sacks this season, the fewest in the NFL. Improving in that regard will be critical if the season is to be salvaged over the coming weeks.

Baltimore traded away Odafe Oweh recently after it became known no extension would be worked out with the former first-rounder. More recently, Tavius Robinson has suffered a broken foot; he will be sidelined for an extended period as a result. With the team short on healthy options along the edge, it comes as little surprise the Ravens are looking into available free agents.

Also included in Baltimore’s recent batch of workouts is linebacker Jesse Luketa, per Zrebiec. The 26-year-old Canadian was drafted by the Cardinals in 2022, and he made 31 appearances across three seasons. Luketa has a track record of heavy usage on special teams and he posted a career-high three sacks last season. It will be interesting to see if he or any of the other defenders being auditioned land a deal in the near future. Baltimore currently has $14.65MM in cap space.

The Ravens have discussed an extension with Washington, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec. For now, the safety is on Baltimore’s cap sheet at $3.26MM. A second-round tender would have cost the Ravens $5.35MM and brought back a second-round pick if the team did not match an offer sheet elsewhere. An unmatched Washington offer sheet now would not bring the Ravens any compensation. Washington started 10 games for the Ravens last season.

Thomas will hit the waiver wire once again after getting claimed off waivers by Indianapolis and failing his physical. He was first waived off of the 49ers’ injured reserve with an injury settlement, so it’s not a surprise that injury prevented him from passing his physical, but a 28th-ranked Colts pass defense was looking forward to adding an additional defensive back.

Although Ogbuehi is a former first-round pick, he has started five games since the 2018 season. He landed on Houston’s practice squad IR list earlier this month but will be part of the Jets’ scramble to reassemble their tackle depth chart after George Fant‘s IR trip. Ogbuehi’s Bengals audition seasons came back in 2016 and ’17; the Seahawks used him as a fill-in starter in four 2020 games. Ogbuehi, 30, joins Mike Remmers as Jets tackle additions this week.

The Ravens were interested in adding Luketa off the Cardinals’ practice squad, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets. That looks to have prompted the Cards’ decision to move him up to their 53-man roster. The Cards drafted Luketa in this year’s seventh round (256th overall) out of Penn State.

Tennessee’s outside linebacker shuffle included waiving Tuszka, who is now with his third team this year. A former Broncos seventh-round pick, Tuszka spent the offseason with the Steelers. He will move to a Chargers team that has Joey Bosa likely to miss games after suffering what Brandon Staley called a serious groin injury.

Cardinals Trim Roster To 53 Players

The Cardinals have set their 53-man roster, and the team naturally had to make some tough decisions as they cut down their roster:

It sounded like Trace McSorley had an opportunity to stick on the roster as a third QB behind Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy, but the Cardinals decided to carry only a pair of quarterbacks through their first wave of cuts. There’s a chance that McSorley resurfaces on the practice squad. The former sixth-round pick has seen time in three career games, completing three of his 10 pass attempts for 90 yards and one touchdown.

Aaron Brewer is a bit of a surprise cut after serving as the Cardinals full-time long snapper for the past six years. However, there’s a good chance the 32-year-old lands back on the active roster once the Cardinals place players on their respective reserve lists. The same could also probably be said of tight end Stephen Anderson, who caught 24 passes across 33 games with the Chargers over the past two seasons.

Marquis Hayes was a seventh-round pick by the Cardinals in this year’s draft. The Oklahoma product will sit out his rookie campaign while sitting on injured reserve.
