In the build-up to Tuesday’s vote on banning the so-called ‘tush push’ play, it was clear opinions were split on the matter. That opened the door to a vote being tabled for the future, which has indeed taken place.
No vote will be held on banning the play today, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports. That comes as little surprise considering where things stood entering the final day of the league meetings. Reports from Russini as well as Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz noted there were not enough votes present to approve a ban, leading to the expectation of a delay.
The Eagles and Bills have enjoyed considerable success with the tush push, but Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott was among the Competition Committee members in favor of banning the play. Debate on injury risk and the specific wording of the proposal sparked debate on both sides prior to the scheduled vote, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated writes. In all, a 16-16 split existed between the two sides, per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
Like with all other rule changes, at least 24 votes will be required to ban the play. In other words, those in favor of doing so will need to use the coming weeks to secure at least eight more votes and move forward with a ban. As Russini notes, today’s decision could allow for the wording of the rule regarding the play to be tweaked, something which could sway opinions one way or the other. The tush push could remain in place for 2025, but the door is open to the play being fundamentally altered depending on how the pending vote shakes out.
In May, owners will convene for the next round of meetings. Coaches and general managers will not be present (unlike now), though, and it will be interesting to see how many minds are changed between now and then about supporting or banning the tush push. Maintaining the status quo, eliminating the play or tweaking it remain options at this point.
Bunch of idiots. Banning a particular play just because your team sucks is so NFL, a league that thinks kickoff returns can be exciting and still wants Aaron Rodgers tottering around out there. Sad sad days.
Kickoffs were exciting before they moved the spot up to prevent as many returns.
The tush push is stoppable but NFL has to legalize defenses being allowed to do their own version of the tush push

DE DT DT DE
Formation with the DL pushing the DT into the guards and center forcing them backwards would prevent the tush push more often. But you can’t shove guys in the back on defense to increase their momentum
Postponed until when? The Super Bowl? LOL
Exactly. They banned it on defense and special teams (field goals and extra points) citing injury concerns, but the exact same play on offense is allowed. It makes no sense. Either ban it, or allow it on defense and special teams.
True. Big fan of the qb sneak. It’s so exciting. Tushpush is so effective that only 1 team does it. Lol
This is targeting. Black success.
If tush push is allowed then Nick Bolton for instance should be allowed to come up push Chris Jones to help Jones to beat his man faster causing immediate pressure up the middle for the QB or by pushing Chris Jones knocking Jones and any oline over taking them out of the play to allow Bolton a straight shot at the QB and if Bolton is tripped by the oline player flag on the offense for tripping or flag on the offense for holding if they drag Jones down
Bolton should probably worry about not commiting so many dirty penalties first.
Just a not important comment to say the least.
He’s a dirty player. Get over it.
Not even worried about it you just are a hating child.
After that NFC playoff game where the ref told the Commanders if they keep trying to stop the tush-push the Eagles were going to be awarded a score. It was the most un-football moment I ever saw in all my years of watching the sport. I figured after that awful experience the League Owners would have been like yeah we cannot have teams being awarded points because teams CANNOT STOP this particular play without committing a penalty. Its not football, it doesn’t belong in the game imo.
While I agree, go to rule 11 section 2 article 1.5 and you’ll see why they were potentially going to be awarded a score. The refs got it right. Doesn’t change the fact the play is as bogus as it gets though.
“Doesn’t change the fact the play is as bogus as it gets though”. That’s an opinion, not a fact my dude.
Glaring fact actually. On a meter from not gay to AndyMeyer its a total AndyMeyer.
More like a glaring opinion. Hope you can figure out the difference soon my guy. I wish you well on your quest!
Once it’s banned I’ll be back
Frankie Luvu being a loon means the Eagles were in the wrong?
No. The Eagles are tip toeing the rules and that’s fine. But the defenses should be allowed to do the same and I believe that’s what every one else is looking for. Luvu was actually doing the opposite. He was blatantly showing how BS this is catering to the offenses even more than they do already, and did it during the NFCCG when he knew the whole NFL world would be watching.
Polamalu was pretty famous for doing that timed jump. He also was flagged many times for not timing it correctly or getting tricked.
A timed jump and getting a full on push from linemen aren’t even close to comparable outside of the potential penalty.
Forward progress is a rule to stop going backwards. Any rules stoping the players from going forward is a huge change to rules. No more piles. No more competition at rushing. Just dead ball if you run into a pile. lol. Next they will ban field goal load ups. If they find a way to limit this. It will have repercussions everywhere.
People get the defensive rule wrong. It states that you cannot push a player on the line of scrimmage. It says nowhere that a linebacker lined up behind the line of scrimmage can’t get pushed. Watch the replays of the tush push over the years and you’ll see the defense being able to push. It’s a tired, lame ass narrative.
The league tabled it because they want it banned and didn’t get enough votes. Pure cowardice
eagles won the ship regardless of this play. they were the best team and would be a terrible time to ban it. however it is an ugly play to watch a guy lay on top of his lineman and get pushed ahead
Sorry….it he defense can’t push players, then why can the offense…..not disputing they were the best team in the SB….but forcing them to run other plays in games leading up to the SB, where in those same situations they had to rely on different play calls, most likely it would have given them worse results and changed their games and most likely their won/lost record……maybe even their ability to get to the SB……
