The Steelers are hosting Colorado quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders on a top-30 visit, another indication that the team is considering using a first-round pick on a quarterback in April’s draft.
Sanders will visit Pittsburgh on Thursday, per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Steelers currently hold the 21st overall pick, which is considered the floor for Sanders’ draft spot. They have also been linked with Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, who was invited to attend the first night of the draft in person, indicating that the league believes he will be a first-round pick.
The Steelers’ quarterback room currently consists of Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson, who were both acquired this offseason. Mike Tomlin has said he is comfortable entering the 2025 season with Rudolph as the team’s starter, though he doesn’t profile as a long-term franchise quarterback. Pittsburgh has been looking for such a player since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger in 2022.
Sanders could fit the bill. He is widely thought to be the second-best quarterback in his draft class behind Miami’s Cam Ward, who is expected to be drafted by the Titans with the No. 1 pick. However, Sanders could be taken in the first five picks after being frequently linked with the Browns and the Giants, so the Steelers may have to trade up if they want to bring him to Pittsburgh.
Teams also use top-30 visit to scout players they expect to face in the NFL. If the Browns take Sanders, the Steelers will have to play him twice a year for the foreseeable future, so their coaching staff will want as much information about his playing style and tendencies as possible.
Trade up. Grab the kid. Tell Rodgers to enjoy his retirement
While I like the idea, if only it was that simple.
You from Pittsburgh?
Sanders can sit for a year while Rodgers starts.
Hey, he can sit a year while Rudolph starts, for all I care
I agree…at this point Rudolph will do better than Rodgers
They better not reach on Milroe or Dart. For Tomlin’s sake.
Tomlin is past his prime in Pittsburgh. A change will be good for the Steelers and the egomaniac loser coach. His non losing seasons don’t mean squat. Hasn’t been to the super bowl since 2010.
The standard is the standard… of finishing 9-8 and a first round bounce from the playoffs, probably in a non-competitive game. As a Steelers fan, it’s sad to see the state of the franchise
Really, any QB is a reach. Pickett was an extreme, stupid reach, but they wanted the feel good story
If we’re talking 10-15 years ago, I don’t know that any of these kids are top 10 variety but football has changed. To me, Sanders is the best choice here but oh well
As for Tomin and the idea of a reach, like it or not, he’s the face of the franchise. The only way he’s not in the organization is if he wants out. I agree, he’s past his expiration date here but Rooney enjoys being lauded for stability.
Trading up when they have so many needs is moronic.
And if the league lets any of these QB’s slip to #21, that’s them telling you they aren’t (likely to be) franchise QB’s.
Just sign the narcissist (lie in the bed you made) and draft a D lineman.
If possible, trade back a handful of spots and add another day two pick and draft a D lineman and a RB.
They need a legitimate quarterback and a legitimate quarterback prospect, Sanders is both. Tomlin unfortunately isn’t the guy to develop him.
You can say that again..Tomlin is all about Tomlin…I hear he demands a public parade in downtown Pittsburgh for his Birthday!
Military parade?
Sure, GMs are never wrong. Remember where Tom Brady and Brock Purdy were drafted…
OK, but…
I don’t think NFL teams should just decide “nobody knows anything” and throw darts blindfolded. You have to trust your scouting.
If he’s a franchise guy, someone will be willing to pay the price (a top 10 pick) for him. If he falls, he’s Kenny Pickett.
Also, if the argument is Brady and Purdy, fine…use your top picks on higher rated players at positions of needs and then grab a QB in the 6th or 7th and cross your fingers.
But it’s nuts to use a pick that could be your next nose tackle for a decade on the second coming of Tyrod Taylor (one comp I’ve seen that looks about right to me).
Likely what they’re going to do
Groundhogs Day. Yet again
Trading up *isn’t* moronic if a) you’re sure he’s your guy, b) the cost isn’t too much
I don’t get the Steelers are clear on either point, so relax
Pittsburgh, you don’t want Rodgers, you really don’t.
With Rodgers, the Steelers have a great shot at a franchise QB in next year’s draft!
And a new coach.
I’d be more than alright with the Steelers developing Sanders. Let him learn the ropes and ease him into a premier starter role for the long term once he’s ready. Theoretically it’s a good fit if the fall occurs as premonition
Makes the most sense and that’s why I’m not counting on it
Maybe this is all a poker game and Khan is bluffing about Rodgers, releasing comments meant to entice the media. But it seems Tomlin has this extreme infatuation with this old dude
No to Sanders. No to Rodgers. Darnold could’ve been the move for the short term. Cousins may be the last option.
No to Darnold. Never to Cousins.
The comps I’ve seen on Sanders are Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater.
Using a first on a guy like that (especially one who comes with a guaranteed media circus) a few years after Pickett is the kind of move that can bury a franchise for a decade.
Twice the athlete either of those guys is/was. Better passer. Better field presence. Better vision
Media circus? Check
And agreed. After the Pickett debacle, it’s a real craps shoot. But truthfully, any QB out of college these days is just that
The arm looks weak.
Haha. That’s funny
I don’t pay much attention to couch potato ESPN or any other sports media outlets who make players comparisons. I rely on seasoned scouts. Professionals who have been around and know what they are talking about. Not some idiot sports talk show host, who never played sports, just Madden football. Telling me who’s better than who and what team should draft whoever.
That’s why idiots that 93.7 the fan employs are the biggest twits on the air.
OK, what comp do you buy on him?
Also, speaking of 93.7…in the span of 11 minutes of listening I just heard Starkey and Pompeani say the Pirates should have gotten even a mediocre bat or two because that would take the team from terrible to mediocre BUT then said that there is no difference between the Steelers going 9-8 every year and being terrible like the Browns, Jets, Jags, etc.
No comparison to anyone. He has one at every level he’s played.
Starkey is an idiot. Pompeani should retire. And the two morons after him mooler and filliponi are two windbags who don’t take calls. AND THEY CALL IT TALK RADIO. YES ALL THE TALKING IS DONE BY IDIOTS
I saw all but one of Sanders’ games this year.
I saw a number of Ward’s
Saw enough of Dart and not enough of Schough
I like Shadeur above all of them… as college QB’s
In this regard, 66 is right. You just never know who’s gonna step up
There just aren’t many “can’t miss” types. Maybe the Steelers should employ a real QB coach
All of that said, I *do* think they need to draft a QB this year…and every year until they get a franchise variety
