Several weeks ago, we heard the Eagles were interested in trading tight end Dallas Goedert. One report that surfaced at the time indicated the only way Goedert returns to Philadelphia in 2025 is if he accepts a pay cut.
ESPN’s Tim McManus offers more support for that notion, saying it is difficult to envision the Eagles retaining Goedert at his current rate of pay. Although the 30-year-old TE is only due a $1.25MM base salary for 2025 – the last year of his current deal – his option bonus of nearly $14MM is seemingly driving the club’s willingness to seek a trade (h/t Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia).
As McManus implies, the Eagles – who already have sizable commitments on the books for skill-position talent like Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Saquon Barkley – may not view Goedert as a core part of their future. As such, they are apparently looking to extract some value for him now rather than simply allowing him to walk in free agency in 2026.
In addition to the option bonus, the fact that Goedert has missed 15 games due to injury over the past five seasons is also working against him, per McManus. On the other hand, he has remained a valuable contributor both as a blocker and receiver, and Philadelphia does not have an obvious replacement on the roster (their recent additions of Harrison Bryant and Kylen Granson notwithstanding). The top free agent tight ends have long been taken off the board, and the reigning Super Bowl champs will likely not be in a position to draft one of this year’s elite TE prospects absent a significant trade-up from their No. 32 pick.
The Eagles are not setting a high bar in trade talks. They are reportedly seeking a fourth-round selection in exchange for Goedert, and they are said to be willing to accept a 2026 or 2027 pick to facilitate a deal. The actual cash outlay aside, only a post-June 1 trade (or release) would yield any savings on the 2025 cap sheet. But even a post-June 1 transaction of some kind would only create a 2025 savings of roughly $4MM.
Still, it sounds like Goedert may have already played his last snap in an Eagles uniform. At last week’s league meetings, head coach Nick Sirianni was asked whether he wants his TE1 back. Sirianni simply replied, “[r]ight now, he’s on our football team.”
Without some sort of contract restructure, that may not be the case for much longer.
This is why they’re idiots.
They don’t need to trade him. They can’t find an even remotely suitable replacement.
Yet they’re hell bent on trading him.
The Superbowl champs, ladies and gentlemen. Still as arrogant and idiotic as ever.
Well there’s definitely the smell of idiot around here. Is it the front office of the current Super Bowl Champs or is it the guy criticizing them? I’ll let you be the judges. I’ve heard Howie Rosman described in a wide variety of ways over the years but this is the first time I’ve heard someone infer that he’s an idiot. as a Cowboys fan, I’d be happy to have that idiot come to Dallas and run things.
So realistically, do you think a guy who isn’t an amazing blocker, doesn’t ever play a full season, gets you around 500 yards receiving and low single digit TDs is worth 15M a year?
If you think he is worth that, why? That is very easily replaceable for much less money. He is bottom half of the league output for 4th highest pay at his position. He makes like 200k less than Kittle, who more that doubles his output in every way.
“Absent” must have been the word of the day on the authors calendar!
i like the use of the word “claimants” in the jack jones post. sounds like court jargon.
It’s hard to view Dallas as a cog. Availability is the biggest skill anyone can have in a job. He is a talented player, to be sure, but you have to factor in that he is going to miss games-which is not his fault. It is kind of like Jim McMahon, when he played years ago, it’s just the way it is.
I trust Howie but this is a head scratcher …..
Godert is the 5th option on a offense that can’t get the ball to its 2nd best option on offense enough. No head scratcher. A over loaded roster that is in the hands of a master. Fly eagles fly.
What is the head scratch? He is overpaid for his output. Top 3 pay for bottom 10 output.
Not to mention, he is old AND always hurt.
Goedert’s a very good player, but he’s 30, he’s missed 15 games over the last three years, and it’s a stocked draft for tight ends. The idea that this is unthinkable is silly. The Eagles also traded Ertz right before he turned 31.
5 years
It’s not about saving money this year. He has void years, they want to clear them. The same reason they dumped slay when they didn’t have to
No matter how good Howie is at the cap, and he’s by far the best, nobody else is even in the conversation, you can’t pay everyone. At some point, peripheral guys have to go, or take team friendly restructures. Goedert is a peripheral guy
You’ve got to think that Roseman has a plan up his sleeve with this position….and don’t count out a re-worked team friendly deal at least for this upcoming season. Plus with training camp coming up this summer, undoubtedly some of the veteran TE’s that could fill the hole on the Eagles will be available and given the draft, you never know who might be available and don’t count the Eagles out in finding a gem that can compliment their offense…..and I’m not an Eagles fan….but he can come run the Giants any time he wants to…..
Pats should trader Hooper and a 4th-5th rounder and get Maye another solid option.
Goedert has always been a security blanket for Hurts and can do the same for another QB trying to improve. The Titans, Cowboys, Chargers or Texans can use his skills but he has to find a way to stay healthy.
A team with a young qb should reach out. Philly can draft a TE or pick one up from trade in picks. DG was hurt a lot the last couple of seasons, he is the 4th option.
They can’t draft one because NFL rules only allow you to draft one tight end every two years. It was a rule that the union wanted to kick in in 2025. They drafted a guy in 2024 who ended up in the practice squad.
Is that actually a rule? Never heard of that before.
