Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that the team has no exact timeline to sign Aaron Rodgers, per team writer Dale Lolley.
Training camp, however, would be a “line of demarcation,” per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. At that point, not having a quarterback in place would hinder the team’s ability to build chemistry and cohesiveness before the season.
Pittsburgh’s public pursuit of the four-time MVP has not advanced past a six-hour visit on March 21. Tomlin said that the two sides were focused on getting to know each other during the meeting. He also did not rule out another addition to a Steelers quarterback room that currently features two players – Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson – who have combined for 21 career starts.
“We’re still evaluating the acquisition of a guy at the position, whether it’s in free agency and/or the draft,” said Tomlin (via Lolley).
Rodgers is the only starting-caliber quarterback available in free agency, but the Steelers could explore trading for Kirk Cousins after the draft. That would likely be predicated on Pittsburgh not picking a quarterback in the first round of April’s draft. The team currently holds the No. 21 pick, where top quarterback prospects Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are not expected to be available.
The Steelers have been scouting the rest of the 2025 quarterback class, including Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, Ohio State’s Will Howard, and Texas’ Quinn Ewers. Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan visited all three schools’ pro days in recent weeks, per Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.
Tomlin also acknowledged the possibility of entering the season with Rudolph as the starter.
“I think that’s why we reacquired him. We like Mason Rudolph, but you know, that’s no secret,” he said (via DeFabo).
Sign Testaverde or Neil O’Donnell, they are like still available
Kordell Stewart announced his comeback actually
Bubby Brister or Mike Tomczak
So Tomlin speaks for the general manager and owner about there’s no deadline for Rodgers.
This shows who really runs the show. It’s Tomlin. I always said he has too much power. He’s an egomaniac.
First of all, is there some hidden meaning behind having a picture of Duck at QB for the article ? I mean, it wouldn’t surprise me that he’s under consideration, given how things have gone?
Second, this is just the most unbelievable offseason in my, jeez, 55 years of being a Steelers fan. You trade for an all world receiver, and then bungle things this badly? And still grovel at the feet of a 41 year old prima donna?
There must be something brewing behind the scenes, right? This can’t be it, right?
I’m a Vikings fan who lives in Butler. Not far from Pittsburgh, so I listen to the local sports radio. Even The Fan is getting fed up with Rodgers.
I’m not sure it’s going to go well if they sign him, but it’s going to be even worse if they wait forever to sign him.
I’ve always liked Tomlin as a person. He coached here in Minnesota. But I think his time is up.
Rodgers is a weirdo but who better is still out there? They have no choice to sign him if they want to compete next season.
Cousins.
Cousins is the ultimate mediocre maker. You’re gonna draft in the mid-twenties next year.
Cousins also loves check downs. Metcalf and Pickens might literally take someone’s life by week 6 lol.
You are right though. He might be the best available.
He’s a mannequin in the pocket. With the Steelers O-line, he may not last two games
Training camp!? Man, Tomlin really needs some help dealing with his obsessions with players/jerks like Rodgers.
Jaxson Dart
It’s going to be Cousins.
Cousins was in Cleveland this week and he prefers the Browns because of Stefanski
Rodgers still considers himself to be an elite player and yet only one team wants him and that team refuses to up it’s initial offer.
The damage being done to his narcissism is profound.
Even if he signs, he will resent the Steelers forever for making him crawl to them.
He’s probably already planning his surprise mid-season retirement now.
Every time I hear Rodger’s speak on Pat Mcfee’s show I think this is exactly why he’s still not married and can’t hold unto a decent girlfriend. He’s just plain weird.
Strongly buying into the idea that Rodgers is going to make his announcement at McAfee’s special event coming up this week live in the burgh. Maybe Rodgers thinks he can emulate LeBron’s The Decision and milk media attention, but if that’s the case boy does he not have a good memory of how that played out for LeBron.
Has to be the worst PR stunt in modern sports history. And that said, given the egos here, you’re probably right
Steelers look like a bunch of little bi*ches right now. Man up. Show Rodgers the door and sign someone. Anyone but Rodgets.
