There’s been growing optimism that the 49ers would eventually sign Brock Purdy to a new deal. GM John Lynch all but confirmed that sentiment today.

When asked if Purdy could play the 2025 campaign on his expiring rookie contract, Lynch dismissed the notion and expressed belief that the two sides will “get the deal done” (via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner). In fact, the executive even hinted that a contract could be completed before the offseason program begins in a few weeks.
“I don’t think it’s too optimistic,” Lynch said (via Matt Barrows of The Athletic). “I understand why Brock wants that. We’d like that very much so. We’ve just got to find that right place for both sides. I would love nothing more for that to be the case.”
Since the 2024 campaign ended, both sides have publicly expressed interest in completing a long-term pact, and the organization’s money-cutting efforts have certainly signaled that a massive investment was coming. Lynch acknowledged as much when discussing the negotiations, but he also left the door open to Purdy playing out next season on an expiring contract.
“Brock wants to be with us,” Lynch said. “We want Brock to be with us. When that’s the case, these things typically get done. And does it happen this offseason? I don’t know. Hopefully, it happens real soon this offseason.”
Thanks to being Mr. Irrelevant during the 2022 draft, Purdy is owed only $5MM in 2025. A recent report indicated that the QB should easily surpass the $50MM AAV mark. There were even rumblings that Purdy could take a slight discount to help San Francisco’s front office, and the seemingly speedy negotiations signal that there isn’t a massive divide between the two sides.
Maybe, maybe not.
This will be a 50m a year mistake. He’s a good QB not a great QB.
It’s the most important position in sports and it’s not easy to find a good one. I think sometimes teams have to be okay paying non-elite QBs elite-level money, so they’re not stuck picking at the top year after year because they were too afraid to overpay a guy.
I think even though a Dak, Goff, or Purdy need a great supporting cast to win, it’s better to roll the dice by paying them and hoping to build a strong enough supporting roster to win a title rather than just resigning themselves to starting over, especially given the failure rate of QB draft picks outside the top 10.
The 49ers wasted three 1st round picks on Trey Lance. They can’t afford to miss on another QB. TBD if Cam Ward ends up even being 80% of Purdy in the NFL and he’s likely going #1 in this draft. If you have a Top 15 QB you just gotta roll with him until at least age 30 or a Luka Doncic type opportunity arises.
Purdy does enough to make you relevant, not worth going through what lots of teams have gone through, sometimes 20+ years of bad QB play. Heck look at the Bears.
Why does everyone keep discounting BP but not guys like Hurts? When he lost 2 of his “weapons” along with a Swiss cheese o-line he put better numbers last year… they didn’t lose because of BP last season. A guy like Hurts who has more “weapons” and he’s one of the top QBs in football?!
Just keep underestimating him… BP has more regular and postseason wins not named Mahomes, Allen, Goff, Hurts and Jackson since he became the starter.
Yes our defense was not as good last year but Purdy did have a lot of bad 4th quarters last year that did help big time to us losing those games lets keep it real.
Hurts made the Super Bowl twice since 2022 and won it last year with the Eagles. The last time the 49ers won a Super Bowl Google was still 3 years away from being established as a company and people were still getting AOL CDs. It’s funny to act like Hurts is lesser than Purdy when the Packers and other teams are currently trying to ban the Brotherly Shove play because it’s so good.
Paying Purdy is a huge risk.coming of a not great year has some injuries concerns as well its very reminiscent of jimmy g.I like Purdy but its not impossible to find another purdy .darnold was our backup two years ago.I still think its best to trade him get picks sign Rodgers and draft a QB.I liked jimmy g too but I thought we should of traded him and sign Brady as well but hindsight is 20/20.
Draft a qb and sign rogers, lmao get tf outta here clown
Purdy, Prescott, and Lawrence are second tier QB’s. Good, but not great. What have any of them done to warrant 50: million a year? If these guys are that valuable then how much should Mahomes, Burrow, and Allen be paid ? 60? 65? It’s getting a little ridiculous.
I bet it’s $1 more than the last record setting contract so now everyone can disregard their pacts and ask for a new deal.
Purdy’s career is over if he leaves Kyle Shanahan’s nursery.
Purdy is a piece of the car, not the engine of 49ers success. It would make a lot more sense for him to sign with a large guaranteed number on more years at a lower per annum and let the front office get to work keeping a decent supporting cast on the field with him.
If Purdy wants huge numbers (Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow), let him walk and take the third round pick. Or trade him now.
Rodgers legitimately would love to play out his last year or two in his home state in San Francisco (where he expected to be drafted back in 2005, the niners took Alex Smith instead). Rodgers would not be worse than Purdy for the next two years, and he comes much cheaper.
Rogers is done !!!
Has anyone watched him play the last 2 years. I wouldn’t sign him if he played for free.
San Francisco should have won a SB before paying the QB. The window could be closing
