In the build-up to ‘Black Monday,’ the Colts and Dolphins issued statements confirming they will not make head coaching or general manager changes. The Giants have joined them in that respect.
“Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization,” owner John Mara said in a statement (via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan). “As disappointing as the results of the season have been, [co-owner] [Steve] Tisch and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.”

As a result, Daboll will continue as head coach with Schoen still entrusted to handle general manager duties. Both have been in place since 2022, but the Giants’ rebuild has not gone according to plan. Daboll in particular helped his stock during his debut season in New York by helping lead the team to the divisional round of the playoffs. He earned Coach of the Year honors in light of the Giants’ surprising success, but it was clear transitioning to a new core would remain a multi-year process. The past two seasons have not seen the progress ownership was seeking, however.
A 6-11 run last campaign fell short of expectations, but ahead of the 2024 season Mara said a playoff berth was not required for it to be considered a success. In spite of that, the Giants’ struggles led to speculation at least one of Daboll or Schoen could be let go during the year. Mara offered a vote of confidence in October, although many around the league still figured changes could be coming at least once the season was offer. Mara made it clear the two former Bills staffers would be evaluated separately, and it would have come as no surprise if a few days took place before a decision was made. Instead, the team has quickly endorsed its in-house options.
Daboll, 49, was one of the top candidates in the 2022 hiring cycle based on his work with the Bills as offensive coordinator. He and OC Mike Kafka have both handled play-calling duties over recent years, and the latter’s job status has been a talking point amidst the uncertainty surrounding New York’s staff. Daboll called plays in 2024, and it will be interesting to see if Kafka is retained (and what his role will be if so) for next year.
Schoen’s tenure has been defined in no small part by the four-year, $160MM extension given to quarterback Daniel Jones in 2023. That deal paved the way for Saquon Barkley‘s franchise tag season last year and his eventual departure, something which drew the ire of Mara. That is especially the case since Jones is no longer with the team. Finding a new quarterback will be priority No. 1 this offseason, and Mara cited the play of the 2024 rookie class as a reason to continue relying on Schoen to add to the teams’ nucleus.
Mara did add (via Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post), to little surprise, that his patience has nearly run out. While the term on Daboll and Schoen’s deals runs past 2025, their futures are certainly not assured over the long term. A major step forward next season will be expected; failing that, changes on the sidelines or in the front office will again be a distinct possibility.
This is the right move. I still think Daboll is a good coach, just has a bad roster. It could be time to move on from the GM though. That Jones deal should be enough to get a pink slip.
Cowboys, Eagles, and Commanders fans approve this decision.
The most entitled team in the NFL.
“Coach of the Year” for getting their ass kicked by Dallas and Philadelphia.
Decline Daniel Jones’ 5th-year option, then give him a big contract.
Lose Saquon Barkley to Philly cos they’re spending the money on Jones.
Earn their way into the #1 pick in the Draft only to blow it in Week 17.
Reward: welcomed back for a 4th season. Robert Saleh didn’t last 4 full years.
Can’t wait for autumn 2025 when the Giants get their ass kicked playing all or mostly 1 o’clock games.
Haha, your Jets are in MUCH better shape. FOH Charles
I guess being the 3rd worst team in the NFL allows you to keep your job. Good thing they won last week.
Horrible year to be in need of a franchise QB both in free agency and in the draft.
That being said.
Free agency id bring in Joshua Dobbs and oddly enough Trey Lance. Let them battle for QB1.
Free agency id focus on adding a #2 WR to Nabers, Chris Godwin?
Draft wise I’d go Mason Graham at 3. Put him next to Dexter Lawrence beef up the d-line with Thibodeaux and Burns being freed up more.
Second round Id go CB
Third round id target Gunnar Helm at TE.
Fourth round id target Cam Skattebo to compliment Tracy Jr.
Graham as the top pick immediately improves the run defense which the Giants desperately need….
The Jets shoot themselves in the foot on a regular basis but at least they are not risk adverse and try to correct a bad situation. The Giants meanwhile just sit on their hands and expect the train wreck to right itself.
That’s a damn shame
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I don’t know anymore.
1. They lost a week 2 matchup against a good Washington squad with a rookie QB because they didn’t dress a healthy placekicker. That’s on the coach.
2. They were in both games versus a below average Cowboys rival team and ultimately lost (Cowboys being worse than 7-10 indicated)
3. Beat an ultimately average Seahawks team playing well at the time and beat an average Colts team fighting for their playoff lives with a backup QB and series of injuries.
4. Not at all competitive especially offensively against Eagles (1st time…2nd time they rested starters), Falcons, Bengals, Vikings, Ravens, Bucs. That’s 6 L’s no matter what.
5. Carolina and New Orleans games were very close, just came out on the wrong side.
So I could see them with a better QB up around the 7-10 the Cowboys posted. The defense was a little better, the QB play was really, really bad, but there are some glimmers of hope on offense. Both lines weren’t quite as bad as 2023 until injuries, but remain bottom third if not bottom 5.
If you think the horrible QB play just hamstrung the coaches, then Daboll should come back and Shoen needs to fix the roster this winter. If not, then this is a complete mistake in your eyes. I lean toward giving another chance but not strongly.
There’s FA QB’s to plug in. Make a run at Darnold and Cousins as a backup plan and draft the best player available like last year.
Two reasons why both should go:
1. Embarrassing Jones/Barkley decision. Everyone watching this team knew the decision should have been the reverse.
2. Embarrassing back-to-back seasons.
They have finally made the Jets look better 🙁
Glad my boss doesn’t evaluate results this way!
FIRE MARA!!! Reminds me of the George Young era when they made the Mara family step out of the way and go play with their Tinker Toys!
Agreed…the Mara’s should be out of the team business and enjoy a cocktail on game day….lol
Not a NYG fan but I can respect this decision, but I can’t support it .. On one hand , bad teams have Zero consistency at the top ,so they change head coaches and GM’s every few years. I can respect the attempt at maintaining A united front .. but this pair is quickly approaching lame duck status and will undoubtedly start the season already in the hot seat ..
Should be more flying signs about MetLife next season.
Yuck
Injuries are an excuse for bad coaching and poor team selection.
Daboll is 0-6 vs. Dallas — gave the Cowboys the largest shutout win in their history. (40-0, 2023/Week 1)
Daboll is 1-6 vs. Philadelphia — the only win came in 2023/Week 18 when Eagles pulled starters cos Cowboys were clinching NFC East. Giants also were embarrassed at Philly in the 2022 playoffs.
Needed a TD off a blocked field goal to win at Seattle when Seahawks were in position to force overtime.
Lost to Carolina in Munich after Tyrone Tracy lost a fumble on the first play of OT.
Lost to New Orleans the first day the plane flew over MetLife Stadium. Punt return TD called back for holding, FG nullified by a personal foul, game-tying FG that would’ve forced OT was blocked.
Gave up 5 TD passes by Lamar Jackson the second day the plane flew over the stadium.
Having your home stadium overrun by enemy fans. Vikings, Cowboys, Eagles, even Ravens.
True blue Giants fans know their team is a s#!tshow and that’s why they hired the plane to say “Mr. Mara Enough”.
And it gets better next autumn when the Giants have to play NFC North and AFC West.
Chucky-do you go to any home games? Curious as to what its like in the stadium these days (past seeing fans from other teams), I’m out here in CO. I may go to the very probable L when they venture out here next year.
7 out of past 8 years of 10+ losses – awesome…
