The 100th season in Giants history will not produce a playoff appearance, something which owner John Mara did not require for the 2024 campaign to be considered a success. Still, this year has not gone according to plan on a number of fronts.
New York sits at 2-13 on the year, and losing the final two games of the season would ensure the No. 1 pick in April’s draft. While that would represent a notable consolation for this year’s struggles, major organizational decisions will need to be made before that point. The job security of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will be a talking point once the campaign comes to an end.
Hired together after their shared time with the Bills, the pair has been in place since 2022. That year produced a surprise playoff run, with Daboll earning Coach of the Year honors as a result. Since then, the rebuilding effort Schoen has overseen has not produced the desired results. The Giants have gone 8-25 since the start of last season, including a record of 0-8 at home this year. A loss on Sunday would ensure a winless campaign at MetLife Stadium and add further to the speculation regarding changes taking place on the sidelines and/or in the front office.
The Daboll-Schoen regime inherited quarterback Daniel Jones, but by virtue of committing to a four-year, $160MM extension last offseason the former No. 6 selection was confirmed as having a central role in the team’s short-term future. That decision was matched by using the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley, who departed this past March and has put himself in contention to break the single-season rushing record during his debut Eagles campaign. Jones and the Giants parted ways earlier this year, although by that point it was clear a reset at the QB spot would be required this spring.
Indications with respect to whether or not Daboll or Schoen would be let go have been tracked throughout the campaign. Mara offered a vote of confidence for both in October, but the Giants have not won since that point. Given the owner’s track record of changing coaches quickly, many have pointed to Daboll being on thin ice. Indeed, a report from last month stated the 49-year-old’s future in New York would be tied to the team’s performance the rest of the way. Amidst a slew of injuries and several underwhelming individual performances, the Giants have not come close to engineering a turnaround in the second half of the season.
While that would suggest Daboll could be among the coaches let go on ‘Black Monday’ following the end of the regular season, that report was quickly followed by one suggesting he could join Schoen in being relatively safe. The latter has seen several players find success upon leaving New York; Barkley has drawn considerable attention for obvious reasons but safety Xavier McKinney is another free agent departure who has delivered a strong showing in 2024. The Packers safety leads the NFL with seven interceptions, more than double the Giants’ collective total in 2024.
Schoen’s draft classes have drawn criticism at times as well, with Evan Neal serving as a key example in that respect. The seventh overall pick in 2022 has fallen well short of expectations during his career, and finding a replacement at right tackle (along with improvements along the interior of the offensive line) will be key objectives moving forward. The secondary is also a sore spot in spite of recent draft investments, and making moves there will be important for improvement to take place.
Presuming the Giants wind up with the top pick in the draft, though, the defining storyline of the coming offseason will be the team’s addition of a new franchise passer. If Daboll and/or Schoen are kept in place, they will be counted on to oversee the quarterback’s development and by doing so move past the Jones era. If Mara prefers to clean house at a critical organizational juncture, though, new faces could be added to take the franchise in a different direction. Of course, the possibility remains that one member of the pair (likely Schoen) receives a longer leash and is kept in the fold for at least one more season.
How do you see things playing out this offseason? Will the Giants elect to keep both Daboll and Schoen around, move on from both or keep only one in place for 2025? Vote in PFR’s latest poll and have your say in the comments section.
Retain Shoen get rid of Daboll.
Shoens done a decent job drafting last 3 years
U mean the same gm that let an all pro back go to his division rival and had every opportunity to re-sign him???
Saquon did not want to play for the Giants (can’t blame him). They offered him contracts multiple times and he turned them down*. It’s the reason they franchise-tagged him. Should they have franchise-tagged him a second time? Should they have offered a little more guaranteed money? Should they have traded him when they had the chance? Probably to any of those questions. But I don’t know how much you can blame Schoen for Saquon leaving. He’s doing great and congratulations to him for finally getting to play behind a good OL.
*since there are some here who doubt whenever I mention this, here:

“”I offered him today a three-year deal at $12.5 [million per year] and $25 [million] guaranteed to be a Giant,” Schoen can be seen explaining to a colleague in Tuesday’s clip. Those dollar marks are similar to the ones Barkley ultimately got from the Eagles, who signed the Pro Bowler to a reported three-year, $37.75 million contract featuring $25 million fully guaranteed.”
I think he means the one that re-signed Daniel Jones to $40M
We now know, thanks to Hard Knocks that Schoen was very deceptive about the negotiations with Barkley. And we know that he offered Josh Jacobs more money than he did Barkley. Schoen is a con artists.
While obviously Saquan didn’t want to accept an offer to play for a team that obviously wasn’t going to be playoff bound during his peak performance years, Schoen could have handled the situation better ie not let the Eagles swoop in a sign him in a PR nightmare scenario…..thats what has most fans upset about…..we knew he could play and on a team with a good O-Line like the Eagles who is surprised….the only surprise is that he continues to play healthy…..
Takes two to sign a contract bottled up
Shoen offered him a 3 year 37.5 mill deal with 25 guaranteed. Barkley chose Eagles who offered a 3 year 37.75 mill deal with 26 guaranteed. That close of an offer Barkley did not want to be a giant. Leaving for 1 mill more guaranteed proves that.
Plus as much as Barkley is talked about people seem to forget Shoen drafted Tyrone Tracy Jr currently at 760 yards rushing, 250 yards receiving 6 TDs as a 4th round rookie on a rookie contract. So not like Giants are hurting at rb going forward.
Having a surprise like Tracy doesn’t make up for the Neal et all failures at the top of the draft where since 22, the Giants have been picking and missing far more often than excelling….you can’t hang your hat on a surprise like Tracy who most probably thought would be Special teams cannon fodder…..
Not saying Shoen has done a good drafting job, but Neal was the top-rated tackle on most teams draft boards. Everyone wants the Giants to fix the OL and even when they try to do that, it doesn’t work out.
Reading isn’t your strong suit rocky
“ Plus as much as Barkley is talked about people seem to forget Shoen drafted Tyrone Tracy Jr currently at 760 yards rushing, 250 yards receiving 6 TDs as a 4th round rookie on a rookie contract. So not like Giants are hurting at rb going forward.”
Read that last sentence. Read it again. And again.
lol, you obviously didn’t look back at Schoens 3 drafts.
2022 draft
#5 overall, Thibodeaux, a middle of the pack pass rusher,
#7 overall, Evan Neal, a bust
#43 overall, Wan’Dale Robinson, a below average slot receiver who was drafted to put up yards after catch, and hasn’t
#67 overall pick, Joshua Ezeudu, a bust
#81 Cordell Flott, undersized and has trouble getting on the field
#112 Daniel Bellinger, they’ve tried to replace him the last two offseasons, but a good backup TE
#114 Dane Belton, bust
2023 Draft
#24 overall pick (traded up to get), not #1 CB , is in bottom half of the league in defensive ratings
#57 John Michael Schmitz, undersized by serviceable C
#73 Jaylin Hyatt, a one trick pony who doesn’t see the field.
#172 Eric Grey buried on the depth chart
#209 Trey Hawkins, bust
#243 Jordon Riley, not on team
#254 Gervarrius Owens, not on team
As for the 2024 draft class the jury is still out.
So tell me how great at drafting Schoen has been and if you trust him to draft and make a decision on a QB?
I did look at his drafts
Maybe you’re confused what the word “decent” means
I really enjoy how you count a 4th round pick as a bust as if that’s a knock against him cause he doesn’t always hit on day 3 picks lmao. You’re reaching at that point. And you’re shocked guys drafted in the 7th round aren’t on the team. Yeah that’s a real shocker I suppose if you’re new to football.
So tell me. How many weeks you’ve been watching football kid?
1st round, 4th round, 7th round – – it doesn’t look like there are any good picks. Maybe you can provide a list of the draft choices that have worked out during that time.
2-13 really says it all doesn’t it?!
Put down the bottle dude. For the sake of your liver.
Bad teams can still have decent players lmao.
Sure Indy.
Tibby been fine. Almost 20 sacks on 3 years ain’t bad. He’s also decent against the run
Wandale is actually a pretty decent wr. He unfortunately tore his acl his rookie year and took him a couple seasons to get right but poor qb play and scheme hold him back. He’s actually decent at creating separating in 5-10 yard windows.
Schmidt’s played fine. He’s not the issue on the online.
Nabers looks good
Nuban looks good
Theo Johnson looks serviceable as a blocking te with some catching ability
Tracy jr looks good
Guys like Flott Bellinger Robinson getting injured isn’t exactly the GMs fault
K now that i answered your silly question indy answer mine: why do you simple minded people count 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round picks as busts and hold that against a gm? Are you that oblivious to how many 4th-7th round picks amount to anything other than special teams or you just a few fries short of a happy meal or something?
Appreciate the breakdown, but let’s clear a couple things up.
Counting late-round picks as “busts” isn’t my argument—it’s more about whether the GM finds value, even in later rounds. Yes, most 4th-7th rounders end up as depth or special teamers, but the good GMs occasionally hit on a starter or high-impact role player in those rounds. That’s the bar I’m considering.
Injuries happen, but part of a GM’s job is factoring durability and risk into evaluations. If certain guys consistently struggle to stay on the field, that’s worth examining. Some injuries are bad luck; others might indicate scouting or medical misses.
On your examples: Tibbs is solid, no doubt. Wandale shows flashes, but the QB/scheme excuses only go so far. It’s the GM’s job to put the right infrastructure around talent to help them succeed. Schmitz being “fine” is good, but not exactly the home run you’d hope for in a second-round pick.
Bottom line: Not calling every late-round pick a “bust” or blaming the GM for all injuries, but consistent patterns in drafting and development reflect on leadership. Right?
Look Harrison we all know you think you know it all regarding football with all your posts but Rockhauler is SPOT ON with his comments about Schoen drafts….they have sucked for the most part….there is no team building or foundation to build from and most importantly, the Giants have no team identity in the NFL….they’re not known for their defense their offense, tough at home, good away team….nothing…..they’re a can’t tackle, can’t throw further than 10 yards downfield, terrible O-Line defending the QB, Special Teams nightmare that just keeps rolling on….fire them both and start over with a coach and GM that establishes a team identity and builds from it.
Rocky doesn’t know the meaning of the word decent either. My god how did you pass high school? After school favors for male teachers huh rocky?
Lmao you’re literally backing a dude telling you Shoen is a bad gm cause 4th round picks, 5th round picks, 6th round picks, 7th round picks didn’t pan out. I thought you’d at least be smart enough to realize how insane that is rocky
>> Schoen has done a decent job drafting >>
You’re kidding, really right?
Thibodeaux: failure
Neal: failure
Banks: failure
Even Nabers can’t overcome those three clunkers in premium slots.
And then, letting Barkley and McKinney bolt.
Apparently have 20 sacks in 3 seasons is a failure lmao. Look ctbronx sit this one out. You obviously don’t know what decent means and sounds like you’re letting your own insecurities drive your comments.
“Letting them bolt”
Offered contracts. Guys chose to play elsewhere. Lmao.
#114 Dane Belton, bust (4th round pick)
#172 Eric Grey buried on the depth chart (5th)
#209 Trey Hawkins, bust (6th)
#243 Jordon Riley, not on team (7th)
#254 Gervarrius Owens, not on team (7th)
Lmao well enjoy your circle jerking sessions rocky, Bronx, bottles. While you’re at it look up the definition of decent and the success rate of teams hitting on 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round picks during your breaks lmao.
“Shoen is a bad gm cause he missed on late round picks” – Rockhauler Bronx Rocky Bottles. Ah man. Nobody should take you boys seriously.
Fire them both, then rinse and repeat with more bad hires. Ruin a QB 1.1 then rinse and repeat.
For comedic sake, keep them both! They’ve done such banner job for the past 3 years.
Right. Whatever the silliest choice is, you can expect Mara to do it.
I look forward to the Browns’ still defending Watson this offseason as well!
Exactly … didn’t even chase bellichik for aesthetics .. he could have atleast called and said hey let’s interview after the season.. giants need a facelift hire.. something that shows they are trying to turn around this dumpster fire.. but they will of course hire some assistant to an assistant with no cache no culture already in place some idiot who someone else says is a guru and we will be 4-13 next year and they’ll call it a move in the right direction
An organization does not reward incompetence.
Tagging Barkley, then losing him; squandering close to 100 million on Jones and watching McKinney leave for Green Bay is enough for me
But wait! There’s more;
Failed premium draft picks in Neal and Thibodeaux
Big broom time a week from Monday.
Thibodeaux was not a failure.
Just a major underachiever.
They should both be fired, but in their defense, I don’t think either one ever had a chance to be successful in this situation. The level of dysfunction in the organization is more than a couple of “guys” could possibly overcome. It’s going to take a Bill Parcells level hire to right the ship. They need someone with a vision, a plan, and the gravitas to tell ownership to stay out of it. Neither of these guys had anything like that.
They gone.
Brian Daboll was anointed “Coach of the Year’ for getting his ass kicked by Dallas and Philadelphia. Will likely finish his tenure 0-6 vs. Dallas and 1-6 vs. Philly.
When the Giants lost 9 in a row, they eventually sacked the head coach. (1976, 2003, 2019). Big Blue now have a club-record 10-game losing streak.
History is not on Daboll and Schoen’s side.
I’d like to see what Daboll could do with a real QB.
The worst thing to happen to this franchise was making the playoffs then beating the Vikings. Thought they were further along than they were.
In their postgame interview, wearing the big bright coats, Travis Kelce looked like a closeted Romanian mafioso and Patrick Mahomes looked like Lisa Bonet.
But, yeah, fire both these guys.
Fire Mara.
Rain is forecast for Sunday, so I don’t think Giants fans will send the plane up with another banner.
They could just hang a banner in the stadium that reads: “Leave the gun…take the cannoli”.
31 other teams want the Giants to retain Schoen and Daboll for 2025.
I’m not saying this is what I believe they should do, but they’ll retain Schoen and fire Daboll. Both should be gone but I don’t think ownership has the appetite for that type of turnover.
2017: Giants fired HC Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese after they benched Eli Manning for Geno Smith.
McAdoo and Reese practically fired themselves though, given the way they benched Manning. Had they not done that, I don’t know that Reese still wouldn’t have been there. I’ve been watching football since the mid 90s, and I just don’t remember the Giants changing GMs a lot.
After three seasons of Abbott and Costello running the organization, can Johnny Boy along with brother Chris and nephew Tom) at least upgrade to Martin and Lewis or Steve Martin and Martin Short?
Aside from firing Daboll and Schoen, the Giants family needs to get out of the front office….the team needs football people that are making decisions….one of the really over looked issues is their inability to identify talent either at the free agent level or the college draft level….they bring in free agents that they ask to play the way they want them to instead of the way they na be successful, and oh my….the mistakes made during the college drafts have led them to the nightmares like Neal, and all the DB’s drafted with #1 choices….CLEAN HOUSE…guys like Chris Marra have to go….and now!
You have let them go. They lived and die on the Daniel Jones sword.
