Both Cooper Rush and Trey Lance saw time yesterday in the Cowboys’ blowout loss. It remained uncertain in the wake of that contest who would get the nod as Dak Prescott‘s immediate replacement moving forward, but that question has now been answered.
Head coach Mike McCarthy announced on Monday that Rush will serve as Dallas’ starter for Week 11. The veteran has made 31 appearances and seven starts during the regular season, all with the Cowboys. Given that level of experience and familiarity with the team’s offense, it comes as little surprise Rush will remain atop the depth chart for at least one more week.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old struggled on Sunday, amassing only 45 passing yards and fumbling twice. Lance saw 15 snaps during the second half, adding to the turnovers as well with one of his six pass attempts being intercepted. No obvious candidate is thus available to handle QB1 duties with Prescott out of the picture (likely for the remainder of the campaign).
McCarthy added the team will be making an addition at the quarterback spot in light of Prescott’s hamstring injury. Healthy depth will be targeted with that move as the team looks to find answers on offense. Dallas ranks 22nd in scoring with an average of 19.7 points per game, and with the league’s second-worst rushing attack the team does not have the option of leaning heavily on the ground game. Rush will be able to help his market value with a string of starts, given his status as a pending free agent; the same also holds true of Lance, whose action yesterday marked his first regular season time as a Cowboy.
Dallas has a record of 3-6 on the year, and the struggles witnessed with Prescott at the helm suggested a postseason berth would be challenging to attain. The Cowboys will move forward with their incumbent options under center, with Rush in line to start for at least the upcoming contest against the Texans. Further decisions at the position will be dictated by an evaluation of that game.
“HERE WE GO” to waste more money on a dead season. Jerry, doing Jerry things.
Betcha he goes for Tannehill. And if I’m Ryan, I’d jump on it. Less pressure spot then let’s say going to a Vikings situation.
Bring back DiNucci!
LET’S GOOOOOOOO!
I could actually see that happening.
The Eagles just let go of Will Grier last week, and he looked really good in that final preseason game with Dallas in 2023. Another experienced option among ex-Cowboys is Mike White, the former Jets & Dolphins backup now on the Bills practice squad.
Not sure they could trade him, anyway. Deadline is passed and I think he is a free agent after the season.
You can sign players off of other teams’ practice squads.
Jerry, there’s a call on line 1 from some guy named Kaepernick lookin for a job.
lol
The way the most brilliant GM in the NFL is going, he’ll sign him.
Didn’t know they were also taking applications for Jerry’s personal butt wiper. I think “Crybaby” Colon Caperstink can handle that.
They’re already paying a guy who can’t read defenses 30 mill a year. No need to add another guy who can’t read defenses to the QB room with Lance
Steve DeBerg has to be sitting on his couch waiting for the phone to ring…
So is Brett Favre.
*Farve, &here’s a fun fact – it’s actually pronounced, “fov-ray”
Actually you are wrong. It’s Favre, look it up and get your facts straight before correcting someone else.
Friend, I was clearly joking. Have a wonderful day.
If Jerry is actually serious about luring Belichick to Dallas then Brian Hoyer would probably get that phone call before DeBerg or Favre.
Keeping Rush in basically confirms that they flushed a 4th rounder down the toilet for Lance.
No Kidding…Rush is not good at all and if he is keeping Trey Lance on the bench then Lance must be Reeeallly Bad
That’s the crazy part like if you’re gonna suck might as well see what Lance has.
Why can’t McCarthy and Jones just be really bad at talent evaluation?
So Cooper Rush, and undrafted free agent, has beat out the 2021 third over all pick. How bad is Trey Lance that the coaching staff isn’t even going to try and get film on him for a trade later on?
The 2021 QB draft class has to be one of historical disappointment.
He can’t be worse than Anthony Richardson.
Cooper Rush at Central Michigan was overlooked. Meanwhile the hype followed Trey Lance all because of one year at North Dakota State. Trevor Lawrence is alright, Mac Jones needs a bit more proper development and Zach Wilson was picked at #2 because the Jets front office only saw nitpicked highlights in a weak Independent BYU schedule. Welcome to college football.
Let Lance play n either he surprises or he gets em high draft pick, seasons already lost.
No disrespect to Cooper Rush but leaving him as the starter means they have given up on the season and positioning themselves for a high draft pick. It’s already an uphill battle to make the playoffs anyway but I would rather see Trey Lance play and see what they gave up a third round pick for.
And wouldn’t you know it, somehow the Jerry Jones led Cowboys would flop when there’s very little QB talent at the top of next year’s draft. Dak is a good game manager but will never be mistaken for a Patrick Mahomes- Joe Burrow clone.
I can’t believe the 49ers got a 4th round pick from Dallas for Lance. 0 snaps in 2023 and thus far 15 in 2024.
Play Lance and see what he an do.
