Not much has gone right for the Patriots this season, and the team currently sits at 1-6 on the year. Frustration has grown in the case of another member of the receiving corps.
Kayshon Boutte began the season behind a number of receivers on New England’s depth chart. Returnees Demario Douglas, Tyquan Thornton and the then-injured Kendrick Bourne found themselves higher in the packing order; the same was also true of free agent addition K.J. Osborn and second-round rookie Ja’Lynn Polk. Boutte was inactive for the first two weeks of the season, but he has since seen his workload increase considerably.
Still, that has not translated into a notable uptick in targets. The 2023 sixth-rounder’s largest involvement in a game so far was in Week 6 when he recorded three receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Boutte has specifically requested for plays to be called for him during recent games, something he feels should not be necessary.
“For me personally, in the game, I get frustrated when I’m not getting thrown the ball knowing that I’ve caught every ball that’s thrown to me this season,” Boutte said (via MassLive’s Mark Daniels). “So, I just feel like I would always go to the sideline and demand the ball. So, whether it was that deep ball – I asked for that. The Texans game, I asked for that. So, I feel like I shouldn’t have to really ask.”
The LSU product has hauled in eight of 10 targets in 2024, and his catch percentage leads all New England receivers. His 17.4 yards per reception average is the highest mark on the team, an indication he could be in line for a larger involvement in the passing game as the season moves forward. Developing rookie quarterback Drake Maye (who is now in place as New England’s starter) is of course the team’s top priority for 2024, and strong play from the receiver spot would be key in that process.
Osborn – whose playing time has been reduced since he returned to the lineup – has also been frustrated with his usage in 2024. The former Viking signed a one-year, $4MM pact to head to New England as the team sought out upgrades in the passing game. Part of than plan in that respect was development from recent draftees such as Douglas, Thornton and Boutte. The latter was the subject of an investigation into gambling during his time in college, but charges were dropped in July.
Boutte, 22, made just five appearances during his rookie campaign, one which included being benched for eight consecutive games. He remains attached to his rookie contract through 2026, so plenty of time remains for the Patriots to sort out his role on offense. It will be interesting to see how things shake out at the receiver spot moving forward with multiple members of the unit making it known they are dissatisfied.
SO ?
Just find out what kind of breakfast pastry he prefers,
and get him a different ROLL.
OR
Could be he is not a “Morning Person”
and would prefer a ………………………..
DINNER ROLL !!
Gotta love these whiny divas making millions of dollars a year and complaining about “not happy with their role”.
Here’s a tip for you, Kayshon… PLAY BETTER AND STOP YOUR WHINING.
“PLAY BETTER AND STOP YOUR WHINING” that’s probably what your HS Freshman team head coach told you too… which is why you’re here commenting and Kayshon is with the Pats.
Boutte isn’t even making one million this year.
He wants his opportunity and from everything we’ve seen in the limited opportunities he gotten he deserves it. Same guys saying stuff like this are same ones mad when they accuse somebody of not having passion. The man obviously wants to succeed if he’s this frustrated.
The problem with Boutte is that he sucks, not that he’s a diva making millions, he sucks at football, he’s slower than molasses and is using 10 targets as his sample size “I asked for that” sure dude I bet the New England Patriots are really worried about keeping a 6th round 5.5 forty WR happy
From an outside perspective genuinely as good as he’s been in the limited role he does deserve more attention. Obviously, you don’t know what he’s like off the field which there’s been concerns or what he’s like at practice but We are talking about a guy who at points after his freshman and sophomore year was a projected top 10 pick. What do the patriots have to lose
This is the same guy that played with Jayden Daniels Brian Thomas Jr and Malik Nabers at LSU
He and Pop are the only two WR’s worth a crap on that team. Maye looks his way often and he’s been making the plays. Problem is, the offensive line isn’t doing their job so Maye doesn’t have the time to wait for Boutte to get open.
They have by far the worst wideouts in the league.
Personality wise? Yeah. Talent wise? Id say maybe theres one or two teams worse
Talent wise it’s by far the worst.
Chargers, Titans without DHop, and Panthers are pretty close I’d say.
Diontae Johnson is better than all the NE receivers put together.
I don’t know, the 9ers right now might be in a worse spot. They’re better roster-wise, but at this moment right now, they’re definitely worse with their injuries. The Saints are in the same boat, and even if healthy, it seems to me that they really only have two good receivers, neither of whom are number ones.
As for (relatively) healthy teams, the Jags finally won again, but I don’t know if I’d call their WR corps exactly strong. Are the Raiders minus Adams worse? The Cardinals have a promising rookie, and a guy in Wilson who may be in danger of being a one hit wonder. In any case, they seem worse from top to bottom. I could see that argument. I don’t think that the Pats are the worst, and not by far. But I do think that NE is pretty far down there.
The Titans actually have a good WR duo in Ridley and Boyd, so I wouldn’t discount them. While they’ve underperformed a lot, part of that is the whole offense (QB and average run game). I’d say Johnson and Thielen are enough to make Carolina better, at least.
Perhaps if we sulk like Bouttee we can get them to fix that annoying “latter” problem that has presented itself again here.
Of the many problems with this team, all the receivers are the same guy or level of talent. There’s 5 WR3s. Get rid of them.
5 might be stretching it. Idk if that many could even be the Steelers’ WR3
Boutte cheeks
There are two major factors here that don’t have to do with individual player performance that need to be considered before Bouyte’s “requests” can even be evaluated:
1. New England has a ton of receivers, and no true number one. All are decent complementary pieces, but none have seized that number one role yet because they’re all fairly similar in terms of production expectation.
2. The offensive line is just so putrid that the offense cannot call any play in any scenario. The entire playbook is probably not even open to them, whether the rookie Maye or the veteran Meyers is starting. I would bet that certain coverages completely take away certain plays because the line just can’t block them, so the offense doesn’t have total freedom in what it can run.
Before even discussing Boutte’s frustration, or his right to demand plays, those two issues automatically handicap anything that New England tries to do. Even if they wanted to, needed to, or should do what Boutte or any other receiver wants, those two things are going to limit what is possible from the start. The second item also plays into a sort of 2a here, which is the lack of consistent run game.
That’s what separates a team like New England from a team like 2023 Green Bay. In each case, we have a team with a host of receivers who are of similar level but are not a true number one. In Green Bay’s case last year, a strong run game took pressure off the receiving corps and allowed their first year starter to make comfortable throws until he grew fully into his role. New England does not have that option for its first year starter, due mostly to that terrible offensive line (and, of course, not having LaFleur or Jones to help, but whatever the reason, the end result and its impact is the same).
Welcome to the new Bob Kraft dynasty. After all he coached and played the team to 6 titles if you watched his mocumentry.
He is now playing Victor Kiam the previous putrid owner. He made the brilliant decision to put Rod Rust part 2 as head coach. The GM isn’t allowed to spend more the 80 percent of the salary cap. The facility is rated by players as one of the worst in the NFL and his is rated as being a very poor boss in terms of supporting players and family. Just waiting for another episode of Patriot missles and female reporters.
It seems like another player complains about the situation daily. Absolute pathetic 180. Sadly I don’t think they are rock bottom. 1-16 looks more likely daily. Ownership even discounts it’s hand jobs
This is the kinda low cost target my gm likes
I’d love for the lions to scoop this guy up
I know we are no fans of divas , but I don’t mind him speaking out .. his career is on the line .. if he doesn’t start producing soon he’s gonna be trapped on someones practice squad for life ..
It sounds like he is assuming his team has a competent qb.
I can only assume he is referring to his role as a member of the Patriots.
