The Jets and Saints continue to be the most popular landing spots for Davante Adams, but there are plenty of other teams interested in acquiring the All-Pro receiver. Over the past week, we’ve heard the likes of the Steelers, Bills, Cowboys, Ravens, 49ers, and Chiefs connected to the Raiders wideout, and now another team could be entering the fray.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, league executives believe the Commanders could be a dark horse contender in the trade sweepstakes. However, Fowler cautions that the Commanders’ young core means they may not be the best fit for the 31-year-old wide receiver.
Fowler brings up a fair point, but the Commanders’ interest wouldn’t be completely random. Jayden Daniels has quickly validated his second-overall-pick draft stock, and with the Commanders sitting at a surprising 3-1, the front office may be willing to make win-now moves while also surrounding their rookie QB with as much talent as possible.
Further, the Commanders’ wide receivers room could use a spark of talent. Terry McLaurin continues to lead the depth chart, and the team has high hopes for third-round rookie Luke McCaffrey. Otherwise, the team’s WR depth consists of Noah Brown, Dyami Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Jamison Crowder (who is currently on IR). Adams would undeniably provide an upgrade to the team’s current receiver corps.
While the Commanders may be entering the bidding war, one team is pumping the brakes on their reported interest. During an appearance on KNBR’s Murph & Markus, 49ers general manager John Lynch acknowledged that his team would consider any improvement to the roster. However, the GM also noted that the 49ers will soon have their entire WR grouping back on the field, with the likes of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and rookie Ricky Pearsall all deserving of playing time.
“We like our group. Davante’s a hell of a player,” Lynch said (via Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area). “One thing we’ve shown is we’re always looking, we’re never afraid to look and see what’s out there. We’re never afraid to pull the trigger. But I think coming in this year, we feel our roster is in a pretty good spot.
“We have endured some injuries, but we’ll never say never. And it’s got to work. It’s got to work for both sides, but it’s got to work for us. I won’t comment on any specific player but right now we like where our roster is at.”
While the speculation is fun, the rumor mill isn’t expected to last a whole lot longer. One league executive told Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post that they expect Adams to be traded within the next week or two, with the wideout potentially being dealt before he’s ready to return from his hamstring injury. Fowler echoed that sentiment, saying he expects trade talks to heat up next week.
Premature statement perhaps, but…I’m starting to think Daniels might be the best QB in the league in a few years.
So much poise to go with so much talent.
He’s got to go a long way to catch Mahomes, but he looks great right now. I know my Raiders had no shot of trading up that far, but it was a nice dream while it lasted.
They’re running a very smart offensive system for him. They’re not asking him to do much yet, but they’re slowly taking the training wheels off a little more every week. And it looks great. This is how young QBs asked to start week 1 should be treated if you don’t want to ruin them. Caleb is being thrown into the fire, I still think Williams is every bit the QB we all thought he was though, he’s just being asked to play hero right now and I don’t think he’s quite ready for it.
He’s on the right track but I want to see him go up against top defenses in the league like bears jets and broncos. Go up against some of the best pass rushers like Vikings Chiefs & Patriots.
When the initial news about Adams dropped, I thought Washington would be a great fit for him. The NFC East is wide open. Washington has won the division only four times in the last 32 years. They have a great opportunity to win it now. They should take it.
I like Adams and he would be a nice addition, but I dont think he can play corner or help with the pass rush.
True. I also think their tackle situation is going to look rougher as they start facing capable defenses. But Adam’s and McLaurin would be a nifty receiver tandem.
Raiders should have included Adams and their 1st in talks to trade up for Daniels.
Washington wasn’t going to trade out of taking their QB.
It would have to be one of the most lop-sided trades ever to land Daniels. To move up that far, you need both draft capital and a team that didn’t need a QB in that slot. Neither of these requirements existed.
Adams is a malcontent and a cancer to the whole team, they need to look for a receiver elsewhere, he got Jimmy G benched, McDaniels fired, got Pierce hired, now that coach don’t want him, has anyone watched Wide receiver on Netflix, I don’t want anything to do with this guy
Jimmy G got Jimmy G benched and McDaniels got McDaniels fired.
I watched the Netflix Wide Receiver and did not get that vibe at all – McDaniel forced Derek Carr out and brought in Jimmy G – Jimmy G was exposing Adams and other receivers to significant hits from defenders with off target throws – that causes receivers to sour on QBs for good reason -McDaniel has established himself as a failed head coach without the help of Adams
I am generally against the Diva receivers and their inflated self worth but Adams is a great route runner who every receiver in the league uses to improve their game. even as he ages, running routes ages extremely well – I bet he has 4 or 5 more outstanding years in the NFL – definitely a guy i would want on my team if we were trying to win
Getting McDaniels fired might have been his best contribution.
Past that, Adams always struck me as a stand-up guy. He’s just not as good a fit now.
Washington’s #2 + McCaffery.
