The Jets will open their season in Santa Clara on Monday night, but don’t expect Haason Reddick to be on the field. The pass rusher’s holdout continues, and while Dianna Russini notes that there has been recent progress in negotiations, The Athletic reporter cautions that Reddick is also willing to “die on this sword.”
While we heard earlier this week that “nothing has changed” in the ongoing saga, Russini writes that there has been recent communication between the Jets and Reddick’s camp. While a resolution isn’t imminent, this is at least a promising step forward for the two sides.
In his pursuit of a new deal, Reddick has been a no-show at team facilities since his introductory press conference in April. Meanwhile, the Jets have refused to discuss a new contract without the veteran in the building. These two stubborn approaches have led to a natural stalemate, but it sounds like both sides are starting to at least mend the relationship.
Russini notes that it’s a “long shot” for Reddick to take the field in Week 1. Robert Saleh confirmed as much this morning, telling reporters that it’s “fair” to say Reddick won’t be in the lineup on Monday. Still, the head coach is hoping his new pass rusher will eventually take the field.
“I’ll stand firm that when he gets here, we’re going to welcome him with open arms,” Saleh said (via ESPN’s Rich Cimini). “We’re going to love him up and he’s going to be a part of this football team and he’s going to help us win a lot of football games. He’s gotta sort through the financial stuff, which is none of my business.”
Even if Reddick does report, a Week 1 appearance would be unlikely considering the short time the Jets would have to acclimate the player into their defense. Russini notes that it’s still uncertain “if he’ll show up after [Week 1] either.” The pass rusher had a chance to swing by Florham Park this past week while attending a charity event in Jersey City. In lockstep with his offseason approach, Reddick decided to skip the impromptu visit, per Russini.
The offseason trade acquisition has already cost himself more than $2MM in non-waivable fines thanks to his holdout, and he’ll start losing $838K game checks assuming he doesn’t take the field anytime soon. The Jets have reportedly been receptive to sweetening Reddick’s Eagles-constructed deal rather than adding term to the contract. If neither side is willing to concede, the recent communications won’t do much to remedy this situation.
then let him die on the sword. as a Jets fan, I do not want to see more than a 1 year extension. Jets need the $$$ to luck up the 2022 draft class.
If that’s the case then why did you trade for him. This is classic Jets malpractice. He said no to their offer before the trade and they did it anyway. That’s honestly a messed up way to treat a player. He deserves to have some level of say in where he’s headed given his current contract situation. This is 100% in the Jets brass and at this point they should release him
Because he’s still under a 3 yr $45M contract? He can’t even be bothered to show up. He’s not so underpaid and doesn’t “deserve” anything. Some players I agree with holding out. But he has no reason to. Let him die on his sword and send him a bill for the fines.
It’s not about what he deserves or not or if he is under contract or not. This isn’t Madden. Bringing in that drama into the locker room isn’t what winning orgs do.
… because NO ONE was lining up to trade for him and give him a multi-year extension at $25-28m. whether the Eagles kept him, Jets or someone else traded for him – it was gonna always be a show-me year for him. His best case scenario was always to get more $ added to this year. Problem is neither him nor his agent realized that and thought they could bully the only team that wanted him into giving him what he wants. Missing games will hurt his overall stats, which hurt his money when he is a FA looking to get paid. Dumbest thing he could do.
If no one was lining to trade for him but the Jets then it was really dumb to trade a 3rd round pick that is a conditional 2nd.
He should shut up, abide by his contract, and play.
No part of the deal was HE needed to show up to training camp and participate and he agreed he would do that and they would negotiate a new contract with him. He decided to back out of his end of the deal.
Says who? The stupid Jets franchise who doesn’t want to admit they traded for someone they knew wouldn’t play without a new contract? Just cuz the Jets say that was the deal to cover their own negligence doesn’t mean that’s how it actually went down. He’s been very clear about what he wants all off season.
Jets’ fans think this year will ‘Finally this will be the year!’. Sure.
Too bad, so sad…. J E T S jets jets jets!!! Go Bills!!!!!!!
If Reddick showed up to camp he would probably have received an extension already. He has not played one down nor was he part of any team activities. I hope the Jets don’t budge. Let him sit out the year. The D line will be fine without him
if the NFL becomes like the NBA, it will be a bad product. You can’t have the players running the show – it isn’t watchable.
And what happens if he tears his ACL first day of camp, Jets still going to extend him? Probably not. He has 0 guaranteed this year. He has every right to not show to camp when he already warned them he wouldn’t until he has a new contract. They traded for him anyway. Classic Jets franchise being idiots.
True. But DJ Reed, Conklin and Bengal’s Chase, Dak Prescott are all playing without an extension. Reddick made his choice. If he sits out the year he will get a prove it one year deal with a random team next year. He has not played a down for the Jets so the team should not bend over backwards for him. He also has not ingratiated himself to the fans
All of those guys have guaranteed money left. It makes sense for ANY player to not want to risk injury later in their career when they have no guaranteed money left. That’s not even mentioning the fact that he MASSIVELY out played his last contract. He has every right to look out for himself as one the best pass rushers in the league in one of the more expensive positions.and again, all this was well known by the Jets before the trade. Why would he even want to play for a team that would do that to him? He PICKED the Eagles out of free agency, that’s one thing. But to be traded to a team that’s going to treat you poorly right out of the gate? At this point I wouldn’t even WANT to play for the Jets after this.
You don’t a sign a player just for what he’s done, you sign them for what he will do. He’s been paid. Hes still playing on an existing contract. Worrying about cash next year shouldn’t be a concern. But not even showing up to camp says alot about him. Why would the Jets offer him an extension when he’s staying home? Maybe he should FaceTime them? Lol Ask for $20M pr yr on Facetime. He isn’t that great of a player. No NFL team is going to deal with him after this. He’s an idiot.
To go and trade for a player knowing he won’t play unless you do something you won’t do is beyond stupid. Jets could have been smart and kept him as the eagles problem. They likely would have just released him. He’s one of the best pass rushers in the league and has been undervalued his whole career. He’s earned an opportunity to increase his stock especially since he’s getting older. The Jets are holding a guy hostage who frankly just doesn’t wanna play for you. You asked for this and it’s gutless to make HIM pay for it.
Eagles weren’t going to release him. you’re delusional. If Reddickulous sits out too many games he won’t get service credit for this year and will still be under contract with the Jets next year for 1 year. the injury concern is BS. This has never been about Reddickulous wanting this year guaranteed – this has been about him wanting 3+ yrs at $25-$28m. No one is giving him that or they would have traded for him when he first became available
He doesn’t want to be part of a great defense that could potentially play in February, let him die on his sword. Based on contracts being signed elsewhere, The Jets will need money for the studs on their team, Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner.
What a loser. Play. Your. Deal.
Legitimately don’t know what Reddick thinks he’s gonna get out of this at this point.
This really is on BOTH the player and the organization. The Jets are known for flubbing situations like this, it’s par for the course really. And Reddick did sign and contract for a certain amount of $ for a certain amount of years. You need to honor that contract and by doing so and playing up to your potential you would most likely get the bigger contract you desire. This whole thing of “their wrong” or “he’s wrong” is inconsequential. They both should take some blame for where their at. This is why I’m glad I have Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell running my squad. You don’t see this in the Lions org! Go Lions!
