4:35pm: After the game, Hill confirmed (via ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques) he was pulled over for speeding while adding he did not attempt to identify himself to get out of the situation. He denied any verbal abuse of the arresting officer.
Calais Campbell was one of the players who intervened once Hill was handcuffed. Campbell said he too was placed in handcuffs for “disobeying a direct order” (h/t Louis-Jacques). Campbell was cited but not arrested. The league has been in contact with the Dolphins as part of an investigation into the situation, as noted by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. One of the officers involved in Sunday’s incident has been placed on administrative duties, Miami-Dade Police director Stephanie V. Daniels announced.
11:04am: Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained by police on his way to Hard Rock Stadium for the team’s regular season opener against the Jaguars today, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Schefter’s ESPN colleague, Jeff Darlington, says that Hill was pulled over for speeding, and he subsequently got into a verbal altercation with police.
As a result of the altercation, Hill was put into handcuffs, as shown in a video. A statement released by the Dolphins indicates that several of Hill’s teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Ultimately, Hill was released with a reckless driving citation, and he will play in today’s game.
Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is in attendance at Hard Rock Stadium, and prior to the game, he spoke with Darlington (video link). Rosenhaus said that the incident was, “completely unnecessary. I’m very distraught about it. We’re going to have to look into it. … It’s mind-boggling to me” (via Schefter).
This will surely not be the last time this situation is discussed, but for now, the upshot is that Hill is on the field as expected and is reprising his role as the Dolphins’ top wideout. Just last month, player and team hammered out a new deal that allowed Hill to keep pace with his elite WR peers, a deal that added $65MM in guarantees to Hill’s existing contract without adding new years to the term.
Hill, 30, was the first receiver to join the $30MM/year club, but the average annual value on his original Miami contract was inflated by a non-guaranteed salary in its final year that pushed the AAV to the $30MM mark. Assuming Hill continued producing at a high level after he arrived in South Beach via a trade with the Chiefs in March 2022, it was always a given that the two sides would come to terms on some sort of restructure.
That is exactly what happened, as Hill has topped 1,700 receiving yards in both of his first two years with the ‘Fins en route to consecutive First Team All-Pro honors. He is now on a “true” $30MM pact, which reflects his status as one of the league’s best pass catchers.
While Hill is no stranger to legal issues and controversy, it would seem that — outside of his reckless driving ticket — he will not face any long-term repercussions from today’s incident.
And where did Tyreek Hill once play? Kansas City.
And even KC let him get away, they didn’t want that drama anymore…
You’ve never received a speeding ticket before? If you have, did you also play for the Chiefs?
He’s on the path to be the new Antonio Brown.
Considering his domestic issues, I’d say he’s well on his way down that path and has been for quite some time
Pacman 2?
And he keeps doing everything to maintain his reputation!
Zero accountability! Certain players in the NFL believe they above the law and are entitled to preferential treatment even when breaking the law.
He was speeding, just like every single one of us do, and the article CLEARLY states that he didn’t even tell the officer his name. Too bad you can’t delete your moronic comment.
The cognitive dissonance of Lolphins that defend this pos…I’d be embarrassed if this guy was on my team.
You should be embarrassed by making comments without any knowledge of what happened.
“Offer support” = “Hey man that’s our star receiver, you can’t arrest him before a game”
Dog has a nice ride.
It looks like Hill is too cheap to buy an Aston Martin Valkyrie though. I’d give him a citation on principle just for that 🙂
Good thing Miami gave him a raise. Only on-the-field performance counts, right?
Yeah because speeding is just horrendous. Can’t believe he did that!
I’m sure he kept his mouth shut and listened to all the officers directions.
His agents mind is boggled??? lol No idea your clients mouth could get in his own way yet again?
Leave 25 minutes late for work and try to get there 30 minutes early…….set an alarm moron
Too many second chances. This clown belongs in jail permanently.
He was speeding.
Campbell being detained as well is pretty cut and dry, you don’t approach a traffic stop and involve yourself. That’s a well known no no.
Hill though being taken to the ground and cuffed only makes sense if he was resisting( doesn’t need to by physical resisting). But I take it with the officer being instantly placed on Admin leave that he/she may have overstepped a bit.
Yeah. If the bodycam is released, I will make my conclusions then. Your comment is pretty reasonable, and about as far as one can reasonably go with the details provided. The leave could be standard procedure(especially in a big department like that) per an investigation, but suffice to say that most stops don’t involve taking people to the ground by average-though it does happen.
It was not a pregnant women or a child so Hill didn’t want to get physical. He’s a horrible person impregnating every woman in his way. It’s ironic this vermin is marketed by the NFL.
Person of color….I’m sick of that, if I was ripping along and then got into a confrontation with police, I guarantee I’d be arrested, not just detained, because I’m NOT Tyreek Hill, and I am I’m a white guy, I’m not a rich , well know , football player, quit trying to play the race card , act like an idiot and face the consequences no matter what color you are
Go be a social worker and show the police how to police. You won’t.
They did not need to use as much force as they did on a traffic stop.
That Tyreek hill might be a terrific player someday. He’s got real potential..
Yes, shame on him for speeding.
Reckless Driving and speeding before he was uncooperative with the officers.
OHHH!! You were there. I didn’t know that. My bad.
It was a bit extra to make him lay on the ground and all that just to let him go like 10 min later.
Never ceases to amaze me.
Tons of examples on this very website of why ppl should wait till we have all the facts and it never fails that ppl don’t wait for all the facts.
Amen to that. I wonder how many of those people in the top 20 comments on this post will comeback and retract it apologize for what they said. I’ll bet none.
Why would speeding in front of a cop not get anyone pulled over? Any color, any sex, anyone who drives to fast will eventually get caught. And CC approaching the police isn’t smart either. Two very large men of any color are going to be cuffed for the officers safety. It’s not a color thing, it’s a matter of obeying posted traffic laws.
Exactly what do you think CC was saying to the cop? Do you think he was being threatening or violent in any way? Or do you think they were late getting to the facility and the cop was taking his sweet time so he got out of the car to say hey man we are really late to something can you write us the ticket and let us go. Based on the fact the cop has been put on administrative leave and that the reports say Hill and Cambell could pursue legal action if they wanted to sounds like the cop was the one acting out of pocket here not the players.
Your other points not withstanding, you are not entitled to have traffic stops proceed along any schedule convenient to you. I won’t address any other part of that, only that specific part. The rest is conjecture without watching the camera footage.
I understand you’re in law enforcement AK but I would hope you agree that asking a question of trying to talk with police about the situation especially if it wasn’t aggressive shouldn’t have ended with Hill and Cambell on the ground in handcuffs. Okay they aren’t entitled to have the stop last as long or short as they want does that mean asking a question justified the response? There are multiple eye witnesses of the situation, Miami police has already launched an IA investigation, one of the officers was immediately placed on administrative leave, and the reports are Hill and Cambell could go after them in court for what happened. So my question to you is how often do officers get suspended and IA investigations launch 12 hours after a situation if they don’t believe anything wrong was done?
Again, I’m not going to comment on the rest without watching the footage. Anything is possible, including both your scenario and the one that you replied to, or something wildly different.
I only wanted to address that one thing-the offender is entitled to a “reasonable” amount of detention on a stop, but not to a specific time limit, so asking for things to go quickly because he/she is in a hurry is not a question that he/she is entitled to ask. I can’t say what was appropriate or inappropriate about the rest without seeing what happened-it’s just not responsible to do so right now.
Nonsense, Man runs. I’ve been stopped for speeding numerous times and never been cuffed. Hill is not a “very large man”, he’s 5’10” and 190 pounds. We will see what the officer’s body cam shows, but it would not be a surprise that he got handcuffed precisely because of the color of his skin.
Yes, speeding and being mouthy had nothing to do with it. Did you forget this is the same doofus that sucker punched a 65+ year old man.
Depending on the size of the officers 5’10 and 190 could be considered large. Lest you forget not all officers are 6ft and 200 lbs. And if you have 2 agitated men of any color talking over each other and not listening to what you are trying to accomplish then for my safety I would restrain one or both. Just because Hill got up late and was trying to hurry to work doesn’t give him the right to speed any more than any one of us, or because he is a player are there special rules? And again this is the same punk who sucker punched a man 40+ years his senior, what would keep him from doing the same to a cop
Unless you are a horse jockey, 5’10” and 190 pounds doesn’t qualify as a “very large man”. And that was your choice of words. 190 pounds is a slightly below average sized US male. At 5’10” and 220 pounds, I’ve never been described as a very large man and I’ve never been handcuffed.
Per the facts laid out in the article, Hill was already handcuffed before his teammate stopped and got involved. And there was no mention of anyone being agitated. I’ve gotten stopped for speeding numerous times, and I never once got agitated. There is no reason to believe that Hill got agitated, or got mouthy, except for your preconceived notions. Let’s see what the officer’s body cam shows.
No one is saying that he shouldn’t have been pulled over for speeding or that he has the right to speed. He should be treated no better and no worse than anyone else who is speeding.
Cmon guys, anybody think Hill actually was conversationally compliant? If you do there’s the old ‘beach front property in Kansas’ motto!
Guy is an over privileged azz wipe that’s got enough money to challenge any and all legal situations AND because $ speak louder than LAW, in many instances, he uses it like monopoly ‘do what I want and get out of jail free’ move.
He was disrespectful and non-compliant, you’d think with his history of police interactions he’d know better by now.
After watching the bodycam footage, those cops deserve to be fired. They were definitely on a power trip.
Maybe so, by why does that exonerate hill for not obeying an officer? I don’t get this! If he’d simply listened and followed instructions like most normally respectful people this whole thing would have been averted!
