Bill Belichick‘s media blitz will cover the 2024 season; the legendary coach has deals in place with the Manningcast, Inside the NFL and Underdog Fantasy Sports. Come 2025, however, the goal remains to land a third HC gig. The Cowboys and Eagles continue to be mentioned as possible landing spots, due to their strong rosters being closer to Super Bowl-level status, but the New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard believes the Giants — should they fire Brian Daboll — will make Belichick their first call. Leonard, during an appearance on The Carton Show, said GM Joe Schoen joins Daboll on the hot seat but added the GM having a past with Bill Parcells — Belichick’s boss with the Giants, Jets and Patriots (1996 only) — could leave the door open to working with Belichick. Schoen and Parcells debuted with the Dolphins, the former as a national scout, in 2008 and overlapped as coworkers for three years.
The Giants, who employed Belichick from 1979-90 and won their first two Super Bowls during his time as DC, came up as a team that would interest Belichick back in April. New York’s quarterback uncertainty may be an issue for a coach who will be 73 by the time he would land another opportunity, but it is not like the six-time Super Bowl-winning HC was in demand during this year’s cycle. A return to the Giants could be of interest if Belichick’s market is again limited.
Here is the latest from the NFC East:
- The Giants recently traded free agent pickup Jordan Phillips to the Cowboys, marking a rare deal between the teams. The trade involved a pick swap of 2026 sixth- and seventh-rounders changing sides, but NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo adds the selections will not change hands if Phillips fails to land on Dallas’ gameday roster for two 2024 games. This would not mean the veteran DT would need to make the Cowboys’ initial 53-man roster, but the longtime Bills lineman would need to be part of the active squad twice.
- Having a past with Schoen and Daboll in Buffalo, Nick McCloud is pushing Cor’Dale Flott for the Giants‘ boundary cornerback job opposite Deonte Banks. McCloud is also in the mix for the Giants’ slot position, per the New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy. Fellow versatile defender Isaiah Simmons and rookie third-rounder Dru Phillips are also vying for the Big Blue slot post. Additionally, Tre Hawkins — a 2023 sixth-rounder who had won the Giants’ CB2 job last year only to be benched early in the season — is also battling Flott and McCloud for the perimeter gig, the Post’s Paul Schwartz adds.
- Jason Wright‘s eventual Commanders presidential successor will not oversee Adam Peters, according to ESPN.com’s John Keim. Washington’s next team president will be in charge of the business side only, with Peters only reporting to Josh Harris, who hired the ex-49ers exec to oversee his football operations in January. Wright, who interviewed for the Packers’ president job, is leaving after the season.
- The Commanders released Brandon McManus not long after the free agent signing was accused of sexual assault in a civil suit. With Washington cutting the kicker days before the second half of his $1.5MM signing bonus was due, a question loomed as to whether the team would pay it out. The team has since sent the kicker the other $750K, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
- The Cowboys are bringing in NBA analytics staffer Kathy Evans in as a consultant, per ESPN.com’s Seth Walder and Kevin Pelton. Evans has worked with the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors and is set for an interesting work schedule; Walton and Pelton note she is currently consulting for the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Tom made Bill. 9 seasons of proof for that simple 3 word statement. Throw in Parcells adding some rings for BB as well.
That’s absolute horse pucky, as it’s been demonstrated to you, ten times (minimum). Arty. Try to post like a human and not like an anti-Belichick bot.
See my comment below for a more balanced and thoughtful perspective on Belichick coaching again.
Spam and vandalism? That would be horse pucky Alec. We all know that arty! has a bit of a Belichick obsession but it seems pretty harmless to me.
Belichick can’t coach again. The physical requirements to do a head coach’s job successfully are too high for a 73 year old guy who is not in good shape. For those who would argue that Andy Reid and some of the greats in the past are counter-indicators, they are not.
A head coach can continue at the center of his hand-built veteran staff in his dowager years. Belichick’s staff was raided and never particularly developed. His two chief lieutenants, Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia, were recruited as head coaches but have totally discredited themselves.
No players want to follow a brain trust of McDaniels, Patricia and Belichick. Moreover, I don’t believe the three principals get on all that well. The Patriot Way for coaches under Belichick and Brady was always work too long hours, neglecting physical health and mental balance. You could call it, the start-up mentality. McDaniels and Patricia lost their life and mental balance permanently from what one could observe when they were head coaches.
In short, Belichick is an historic great, but he does not have a suitable lieutenant to be able to soldier/general on like Andy Reid (who will have to go soon himself). It’s too late for him to build a new lieutenant now. That process takes years. There’s no viable path ahead for Belichick has the last couple of years in New England showed.
If a team were to hire Belichick, he wouldn’t be the worst coach in the league but he’d be in the bottom half or third. Why would a team do that to itself?
He has enough energy to keep up with his 24 year old girlfriend! I think he will be fine coaching a football team
Belichick’s experience with Gronk taught him how to appreciate a good TE.
Don’t have the details on that – had no idea BB dipped in the fountain of youth regularly. What’s the story?
“In June 2024 it was reported that Belichick was in a relationship with Jordon Hudson, who is a 24-year-old former cheerleader.”
A very pretty young lady, Mr Belichick is certainly enjoying his retirement. All the more reason to continue as a media personality (he’s pretty good and his job is not on the line every week), and not go back into the inferno of building a staff and coaching an NFL team.
Barely breathing NYC tabloid, owned by a Wall Street hedge fund, floats the idea of its favorite NFL coach coming in as the Giants’ savior. All it took was Brady leaving Foxboro to expose Belichick as a loser.
Said tabloid also has Mike Lupica who pre-files his Sunday column on Saturday morning. This weekend Lupica dredges up the tired trope of “It’s All About The QB”. Four hours after Lupica’s column goes online, Daniel Jones throws a pick-6 in the Giants’ preseason loss at Houston. A pick-6 in a preseason game should be sufficient to get you cut.
Everyone knows Weekly World New is “the world’s only reliable news”. It’s being reported that Belichick will be secretly cloned in a remote undisclosed location and return to coach both New York teams as they are each desperately in need of a savior.
Not sure why Daboll would be on the hot seat. He dragged a so-so team into the playoffs and won the first game. Next year his team got banged up. You can always tell a coach is good when his prior team trends downward after he leaves, like Buffalo’s offense did after Daboll left. Same with Shanahan after he left ATL OC job.
As for BB, no one knows the game as well as he does. He’s been around it since the 1970s? His father was a coach too. Former players have said he teaches them techiques they’ve never heard before. I’ll say hes a defensive mastermind, but offensively Brady and MacDaniel carried him.
Always remember, Daboll was “Coach of the Year” for 2022 cos he allowed the Giants to get their ass kicked by Dallas and Philadelphia.
The Giants act like they’re entitled cos they’re in the NFC East. Why else did they let their best player leave for Philly?
I imagine the Giants would allow any of their players to leave for Philly if it would put an end to those “Miracles in the Meadowlands”.
