Lewis Cine was available on waivers after the Vikings moved on from him. The third-year safety went unclaimed, but in short order he appeared to line up a Jets agreement. Instead, he will be joining the Bills.
Cine is set to sign with Buffalo, Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network report. As was the case with yesterday’s development, this will be a practice squad deal at first. Cine will attempt to rebuild his value while providing safety depth to the Bills, a team which has seen plenty of turnover in the secondary this offseason.
Buffalo no longer has either member of the Jordan Poyer–Micah Hyde tandem at the safety spot, although the latter could rejoin the team if he elected to avoid retirement. The Bills re-signed Taylor Rapp, added Mike Edwards in free agency and kept special teamer Damar Hamlin on the 53-man roster. Those three offer plenty of experience on the backend, and they are positioned to handle notable roles in 2024.
The Bills also invested in the safety position during this year’s draft, adding Cole Bishop in the second round. The Utah product was unable to remain healthy throughout his first training camp, but he has the upside to take on starting duties relatively early in his career. While the top of the depth chart gets sorted out in the fall, Cine will look to earn a promotion to the Bills’ active roster in short order.
The 24-year-old was unable to live up to expectations during his brief Vikings tenure. Cine, the final pick in the first round of the 2022 draft, has played just 10 regular season games to date. He will join veteran Kareem Jackson on the taxi squad to begin the campaign as he hopes to find a long-term opportunity. If one does not arise, Cine will be free to sign to the active roster of another team during the year if he draws interest.
Ugh. Really liked the signing for the Jets. Definitely makes sense for the Bills.
Same
Switcheroo sucks…
Worth a flyer. The Bills just own the Jets in every way.
Sure do! Hey who won opening day last season?
Where did you watch the playoffs from, again?
You mean where did I watch Buffalo underwhelm again?
Jets fans trying to own Bills fans for one game a season ago is peak Jets fan.
But hey, the Jets win a superbowl in 1960 something , so I guess that is relevant?
I mean, many here were not born yet – but get your shot in anyway?
Both of your franchises are historically embarrassing, settle down guys.
Kind of a timeshare since most teams own the Jets.
Boom roasted!
Haha
Ha!
Like how Washington, Dallas and the Giants owned the Bills in the Super Bowl? While KC and the Bengals own them in the AFC?
Yes. All super relevant to the upcoming season.
But enjoy your potshots if it makes you feel better.
I will when KC or the Bengals or even the Ravens send you home with the rest of the Jet fans you both truly are sad bunch to watch
Yeah because signing a first round bust to your practice squad is owning a team…
The reason the Bills have never won a Super Bowl is because the players realized that they’d have to go back to Buffalo for a parade.
That’s why tons of former players of their NFL and NHL teams stay in the area to raise a family, and still live there today.
Love this.
Im actually not concerned with the Bills secondary at all – but added a guy like this a depth is really fortunate.
Cine was picked as a potential starter, so the depth should be more than good. Perhaps he thinks that there’s a clearer path to starting in Buffalo than in New York at safety, but like you, I think that Buffalo’s starters are pretty set at the moment.
Ive heard some blame his slow start on his injury, but I listened to media person who covers the Vikings indicate its more of a of a preparation thing with him. He simply was often out of place because wasnt learning his responsibilities in practice. His problem was more will than skill.
It’s why he was mostly special teams.
Thats why a first round guy just two years ago has to settle for the practice squad.
But – great RAS score and McD really can coach safeties – his record is really strong. Poyer and Hyde made themselves under Sean and Babbich. Look at all the great safeties Seam has coached in his career.
A practice squad addition for a chance to learn from Sean is smart move to try and rejuvenate his career.
Oh yeah, no argument there. I just meant in terms of athletic ceiling. Cine should have at least the potential to be a starter, if he bothers to commit to it. Not all depth players do, of course.
McDermott’s history as a DB, hopefully for Buffalo, will help get through to Cine or perhaps motivate him some. If not, they didn’t lose much.
Sounds like a Bills fan who knows the end of the never-was dynasty is near.
Jets fans would know “never-was” dynasties better than anyone.
I mean, the Jets do at least have one Super Bowl win in franchise history.
Before most Jets fans were born…
Would you rather your team have one Super Bowl win in its history or zero like Buffalo, Atlanta, Arizona, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Jacksonville, Houston, etc.?
There’s really only one correct answer.
I’m not going to take sides in this silliness, but I would like to point out that Cleveland and Detroit each do have NFL Championships in their history, and that should at least be recognized.
I have no problem with it being recognized as long as it’s denoted as such and people understand it was a 14 team league at the time. Every team should win a championship at some point in a 14 team league, so Super Bowl wins hold a lot more value, IMO.
Maybe, but it was also a league filled with part time players, some of whom wouldn’t show up because they had other jobs, and a guy like George Halas who would actively poach players as soon as they showed any threat to become good, so there’s that, too. It’s hard to win with unreliable rosters. So I’d say that it was still difficult.
I get what you’re saying, but a 14 team league with a dominant team or a 28-32 team league who has had two dominant franchises over the past 23 years. It’s not really comparable to me. If you were in the top half, you at least had a chance. Now if you’re in the top half, you might not even make the playoffs.
Uno reverse card!
