AUGUST 25: Chase has returned to the practice field, as Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reports. As of now, there does not appear to be any additional news to report on the contract front, but in order to be ready for the regular season and ramp up enough to mitigate the risk of soft tissue injury, Chase needs to get some practice work in.
AUGUST 23: As efforts to work out extensions in the cases of CeeDee Lamb (Cowboys) and Brandon Aiyuk (49ers) take place, uncertainty also looms over Ja’Marr Chase. The Bengals Pro Bowler continues to watch training camp from the sidelines as he seeks a monster extension.
[Offseason In Review: Cincinnati Bengals]
Chase – unlike his receiver peers who have yet to secure a lucrative second pact – is under contract for two more years since the Bengals made the obvious choice of picking up his 2025 fifth-year option. An extension, as has long been known, will cost far more than the $21.82MM he is due next year. Justin Jefferson‘s $35MM-per-year Vikings extension represents a target for Chase and other wideouts in similar positions, but the terms of that pact may not be sufficient to get a deal done.
Multiple teams are of the view that Chase will be the league’s top earner amongst non-quarterbacks once his contract is in place, Yahoo’s Charles Robinson writes. That title belonged to Nick Bosa last year, but Jefferson eclipsed him with his Vikings pact – one which includes nearly $89MM in guarantees. That extension has Jefferson in a tier of his own with respect to not only AAV but also locked in compensation, and Chase (along with Lamb and Aiyuk) is likely to close the gap between Jefferson and the rest of the field.
Bengals owner Mike Brown has confirmed Chase’s extension is a key organizational priority (one which will require breaking with standard organizational procedure and committing guaranteed money beyond Year 1). Keeping him in place with quarterback – and former LSU teammate – Joe Burrow would help keep Cincinnati’s offensive positioned for success, but Brown has suggested the team is willing to wait one year before finalizing a massive extension. As Robinson notes, the Bengals seem to be struggling to come to grips with the potential of a record-breaking pact being necessary to get Chase back on the field.
With Cincinnati’s preseason in the books, attention will increasingly turn to the 24-year-old’s willingness to miss regular season time if no extension agreement is reached. A recent report indicated Chase was OK with delaying negotiations until 2025 – and therefore waiting until the Lamb and Aiyuk accords are in place – but it remains to be seen if he will suit up in time for Week 1. As Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic writes, the 2021 Offensive Rookie of the Year himself may not have his mind made up at this point (subscription required).
There is of course still some time for Chase and the Bengals to come to an agreement either on a new deal or an arrangement to pause talks until after the coming campaign. This situation will no doubt be influenced by those of Lamb and Aiyuk, but those pending free agents face more urgency to get a deal done in time for September. A very late extension agreement (like the one worked out for A.J. Green in 2015) could still be in the cards, but plenty of unanswered questions remain regarding Chase’s immediate future.
I hate it but the bengals need him . Not sure they will pay him and cost will just keep getting higher .
Bengals have no reason to be in a hurry to get this done. They have cost control of him for the next 2 seasons as well as potentially 2 years of franchise tags (if necessary), which would still be a deal compared to what he’s demanding. If he wants the biggest bag, then he should go put up an All-Pro season this year and earn it. He’s never come close to the crazy stats Jefferson has put up. Simply being “next guy up” is a stupid reason to demand the biggest contract ever for your position. Go earn it.
You’re right, but if a supposed superstar is treated like that; then FA’s and their own players will opt to play elsewhere.
No doubt he’s elite at his position. But I just don’t see him as having the talent/production level that be paid above Jefferson, who I still believe is the best in the league.
I’m not arguing who is better. But Cinny has had a long history of being cheap and by dragging out this contract for 4 years; it will backfire w/ other players. That’s my point. It would be a terrible perception.
Cincinnati has a long history of being cheap. Have you been watching the team since about 2015? The Jets have a long history of losing. Yep, let’s not think they actually win THIS year. The Bengals aren’t cheap, it’s called spending your money where it will do some good. So cheap Burrow makes 50 million a year, so cheap they have the highest paid place kicker in the NFL. You can’t pay Chase and Higgins and have guys good enough to protect Burrow and have an semblance of a defense. Who would you rather have Chase or Higgins? Chase blinked first so now Mike Brown will pay him his money. Sometimes employees need to remember who signs their paychecks.
If you knew Bengals history, then you would know from 2015- your start date- that they have 2 division titles, four 4th place finishes, and two 3rd place finishes. WOW! That’s impressive.
BTW, your $50m QB plays 50% of the time over 4 years. Great signing.
Do you live outside of Indianapolis? I know a guy up there who sounds just like you. Lives in a suburb that starts with Green. Well, maybe not.
My Bengals will be here long after I’m gone so I’m not all that concerned. Mike Brown is definitely not a tenth of the football guy his dad was, but he’s kept the team in Cincinnati and has handed the reigns over to Mr. Tobin, so he’s not stupid. He’s not a moneybags like Mr Kraft or Mr Jones, but he does alright. I watch for fun, not for life and death, so I’m not going to **** myself if they don’t win. It’s a game arty, it doesn’t really matter in real life, does it. We come on here and crab, but if the NFL shut down tomorrow we’d still be here and we’d go off to work and go on with our lives. You have a good day and watch your blood pressure.
If it’s just a game and it doesn’t matter, then why watch and be passionate about a franchise? Let me help, sports is about winning. But I want to thank you for showing me why the Bungles always suck, they aren’t interested in winning.
It’s just a game. Why are you obsessed with being an authority on something so trivial as the NFL? I couldn’t care wether they win or lose. I just like to watch the games. Sports is a diversion for people, but some people become obsessed and take it to far.
Talent wise is right there with the Top 5 WR sure but is he actually better than Jefferson. Lamb. Hill.
They say he’s asking for 40M per year for 4 years. He can ask sure. He’s not getting more than Jefferson no matter his need to beat him by 1$ like they write about in Cincy papers.
They are going to pay him. They’ve already committed to it. Brown if anything will not let a player dictate to him how it goes. He will get his guaranteed money too. Part of me though thinks that if Burrow is a Top 3-4 QB he can elevate good WR or how about a TE for once. That’s on Zac and his offense as to why he doesn’t use them more.
But he should be able to elevate the WR with his play if the OL does there job. There’s always going to be fresh WR coming out college since the sport is geared to passing. But the optics of not signing him will be bad for the team and Joe’s relationship with Chase.
What measure is he better than hill or Jefferson in may I ask? Because statistically they both blow chase away lol.
Absolutely. Outside of snazzy rookie season, Jamarr Chase’s numbers are of a slightly above average number one receiver in the NFL.
What does he think he’s doing? Chase is running straight at the Leveon Bell/Antonio Brown wall in season four. Bell waited five seasons before sitting out a season, Brown waited nine seasons before losing his mind. Both Brown and Bell were regular 1st team All Pros for those seasons they played.
Did you read the first paragraph I wrote?
I said is he actually better than those 3 players?
Did I have to add a NO for you to understand that he’s not? I said talent wise Top 5. Clearly stats wise.
If they did not run a 3 WR set his numbers would probably be better but with Higgins and Boyd they don’t need him to be the only focus.
I agree Bacon. The investment they made in Burrow should prevent them from needing to pay Chase $40 million per. WR production can be manufactured.
Don’t worry Jamar, Joe Brrrroken ankles will make sure you have your gaudy numbers
Prediction , Chase and Lamb will end their vacation . Got out of hard practices and getting hit in preseason . Magically come back to teammates right before season opener . Good to be privileged
