Many recent training camp contract disputes around the NFL have included holdouts from players attached to a rookie contract (and therefore eligible to have fines waived) or ‘hold-in’ efforts by those who avoid financial penalties accruing. Haason Reddick does not check either of those boxes, and his Jets absence continues during roster cutdowns.
The two-time Pro Bowler has been away from the team throughout the offseason after being acquired via trade from the Eagles. That move, of course, came as Reddick sought an extension Philadelphia was not prepared to authorize. He is therefore a pending free agent after an early effort was made on the part of the Jets to work out a new deal.
Reddick expected his new team to circle back to extension talks, but that has yet to take place. New York has insisted on the 29-year-old reporting to the team before negotiating a long-term contract or an upgrade to his existing pact. A lack of progress on either front prompted a trade request earlier this month, but to no surprise general manager Joe Douglas immediately made it clear it would not be honored. This saga could still linger well past the start of the regular season, though.
Sources told SNY’s Connor Hughes they “genuinely believe” Reddick could continue his holdout all the way through the 2024 campaign. To be clear, the lack of tangible updates on the contract front still means a resolution could emerge at any given time, or Reddick’s absence could stretch only briefly past Week 1. Still, the possibility of a long-term effort to secure a new pact or a trade is notable considering the financial cost of Reddick’s actions this offseason.
The former first-rounder has racked up $50K in daily fines during training camp, and the Jets could dock a portion of his signing bonus as a result of his ongoing absence. Reddick would miss game checks on a weekly basis if he were to remain away from the team during the regular season, and the matter of his contract tolling would come into play midway through the campaign if he continued to avoid reporting. With the Jets continuing to hold a firm stance, it will be interesting to see how far Reddick will be willing to go.
The former Cardinal and Panther has amassed no fewer than 11 sacks in each of the past four seasons, though the Jets’ edge contingent has a number of notable contributors in his absence. Reddick’s arrival would mark a boost to the unit, but when (or if) that will take place is still an unanswered question.
Incompetent GM.
I mean I don’t completely disagree but Reddick has no leverage here. He’s costing himself hundreds of thousands of dollars for…what exactly? He can show up, make his millions, while negotiating with the Jets for a new contract. Right now the Jets have no reason to appease him if he won’t even do the bare necessity of showing up. Reddick sure comes off as a locker room cancer.
Apparently you miss read the article. Reddick is not showing up for work. Fireable offesne for the GM.
Heads would roll in Florham Park only if there is a collapse like the Patriots did in 2023.
Fireable offense for the player, who is still under contract, for not showing up for work. Could any of us just decide not to show up for our jobs and expect to keep them? It’s really that simple… he’s the team’s employee, not the management.
“Heads will roll” for the Jets’ front office no matter what after (if not during) this season. Because that’s what happens with this “organization” throughout its history. Yet nothing ever changes!
And yet hundreds of players under contract were cut yesterday by all 32 teams. The players have a right to fight for what they believe they are worth.
He’s worth $14+ million this season, if he decides to show up. If he doesn’t, then he forfeits that and pays fines. Just greedy and dumb. Play and go to free agency next year and sign with whoever the hell you want! (or whoever wants to take on this headache) Other players are in camp and in the final year of their contract. There’s a reason this guy is already with his 4th team and hasn’t turned 30 yet.
Gotta love the thumbnails of him dressed as an eagle. Get to hate on Jets and Eagles at once! Win win
Kinda hard to post a photo of him in a Jets jersey…
He’ll be back by week 3.
Technically, he has until about Week 9 depending on when the Jets’ bye is to report and play out the rest of the season without his contract tolling. I don’t think he’ll sit out the entire season.
Of course but he should have been holding in to begin with. The reason I say week 3 is I can’t believe anyone would be that stupid to hold out longer. Although it would be quite comical to see him hold out all season and just remain with the Jets.
I like the idea of the Jets pressing the issue – but I would have been looking for another team to take on that problem…
Nobody is going to give up anywhere near what JD did to get him. He will not be traded
Reddickulous’s jaw will drop when he sees McDonald get 3 sacks and he realizes holding out means nothing but lost money. McDonald’s bend and spin move are elite. Reddick’s agent should have advised him to “hold in”, get paid and bring Jets to table. He could have held out game 3 of preseason or game 1 of season. Reddick should fire his agent!
You don’t make this trade without and understanding with the player one way or the other
It seems to me the misunderstanding here was between Reddick and his agent. Haason was clearly expecting a deal that included more than just some performance incentive bonuses. In his place I would be seeking new representation.
What a dope. He is losing millions, and he will be under the jets the following year too if he doesn’t play for them by week 10. If he sits out for 2 years who is going to pay him the big contract he is seeking for? Also he is getting older as well
