As his training camp holdout continues, Haason Reddick has clearly not made progress on contract talks with the Jets. The Pro Bowl edge rusher has requested a trade, veteran insider Jordan Schultz reports.
Reddick was acquired via trade from the Eagles earlier this offseason with the expectation an extension would be worked out. That has not come to fruition, though, and the 29-year-old has remained absent from his new team while seeing a resolution. Progress on a short-term fix – via incentives being added to the one year remaining on Reddick’s existing pact – was reportedly being made in late July, but today’s news certainly suggests otherwise.
[RELATED: Reddick Expected Jets To Revisit Extension Talks]
As Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports confirms, no contract talks have taken place between the Jets and the former first-rounder to date. New York is not prepared to negotiate with a player who has – contrary to the team’s expectations – not attended any workouts since being acquired. As a veteran, Reddick has accumulated mandatory daily fines by holding out. That endeavor has cost him over $1.8MM so far, and the Jets could also go after a portion of his signing bonus. In the event a trade were to be worked out, though, those financial matters would become a moot point from the team’s perspective.
Of course, the Jets would be hard-pressed to find a suitor for Reddick given his status as a pending free agent. New York sent Philadelphia a conditional third-round pick to acquire him after it became clear the Eagles would not make the long-term commitment Reddick was seeking on a new deal. The Jets reportedly made an extension offer before the trade was finalized, but a short-term arrangement (via a restructure) represented the more logical approach from New York’s perspective. Both avenues have failed to bring Reddick into the team’s facility, leading to a new phase in this saga.
The Temple product is due $15MM this season (not taking into account the fines he has racked up) as a pending free agent. Reddick has posted at least 11 sacks in each of the past four seasons, so he could command a lucrative deal on the open market next spring. Concerns over his age would be a factor in free agency, though, not to mention the drama which has ensued over his Eagles exit and delayed Jets arrival (if one does end up taking place).
Given the draft capital included in the trade and the assurances received that Reddick would be in attendance for mandatory minicamp and/or training camp, it would come as a surprise if the Jets sought out a trade partner. If they did, however, a market could exist – at least on a rental basis – given his production with the Cardinals, Panthers and Eagles. Reddick would presumably handle a starting role on any new team, as he is expected to with New York (a team which lost Bryce Huff in free agency). It will be interesting to see how the Jets proceed knowing he now wants another move. As expected, general manager Joe Douglas has confirmed in a statement Reddick’s request will not be met.
With the regular season approaching, a resolution of some kind will need to be made relatively soon in this case. Reddick would forfeit game checks on a weekly basis if he continued to sit out while a member of the Jets. His holdout lasting the entire season would lead to his contract tolling, making it an extremely unlikely outcome. As progress on contract talks remains a factor to watch closely, though, the prospect of a trade is now an element to be taken into consideration. How this plays out will be a key storyline for the Jets in the build-up to a highly anticipated 2024 campaign.
Can’t remember the last time a player requested a trade from a team that traded for him the same offseason
I put this more on the Jets than on Reddick. He’s made it clear all offseason he wants a new deal. This was always going to be an issue regardless of the team. Any team that traded for him should know he would do this without a new deal. Don’t trade for him if you are not willing to sign an extension all you are doing is adding drama and attention to your team for no reason.
Who cares that he wants a new deal. Or a trade. The team is under no legal obligation to trade him despite what he prefers. He is under a contract that he voluntarily signed for one more year.
At the end of the contract, he can be a free agent and do whatever he likes. Until then, live up to your contract!!!
They don’t have to care and they don’t have to give him a deal. Let’s put it another way. Let’s say I interview for a job. I tell the person interviewing me that in 8 months I’m moving across the country. They know this and hire me. In 8 months if they act shocked when I leave the job to move that’s 100% on them.
The Jets knew what he wanted and what he was likely to do. In trading for him with that knowledge they had to be ok with him doing this. If not they shouldn’t have traded for him. It’s as simple as that.
If, as you say, the Jets or the Eagles thought this was a situation that would require a long term deal, the compensation would have reflected that. The deal was reflective of the fact that Reddick is a rental only. A third round pick is the standard rate for a high end one year rental. Reddick is attempting to leverage the Jets into giving him a new payday. Reddick is under contract. His choices are to play or retire. He can sit all he wants, Jets aren’t going to overpay for a guy they just traded for.
Reddick is 29 looking for a new contract. His behavior is not unexpected wanting a new deal. If we went purely off what a contract says then all these players on year 4 or 5 of their rookie deals wouldn’t be doing sit ins either. Yet, it’s become common place. This isn’t Madden these are humans. There’s a reason why the Jets as an organization have a long history of losing and it’s because building up a good locker room and culture are important for winning.
Yeah he is 29. He could sign a massive deal with any team as a free agent. This is the system players agreed to in collective bargaining, and the players joining the league know what the terms are before they sign the contract. I’m not opposed to players trying to maximize their earnings, but the methods they employ indicate a lack of morals. This isn’t about having a deal on the books for next year, this is about getting paid more this season than the amount you previously agreed to. If you are worried about your salary always being near the top of the position, you shouldn’t sign deals for more than 1-2 years. Especially during a time period when the salary cap is rapidly jumping, and everyone knew it was going to happen. The people buying the tickets and jerseys typically work a “9-5” and couldn’t imagine sitting at home until your boss agreed to pay you more. Nobody is mistaking a million dollar athlete for an average Joe, but perception is key in the entertainment industry.
you shouldn’t sign deals for more than 1-2 years.
======================
That’s my main objection. They want the protection of a long-term deal, but the flexibility of a short-term deal. You can’t have both.
Teams aren’t obligated to respect contracts either. Guys are cut all the time, regardless of their deal. The idea that players should be expected to is very one sided, either through intention or lack of understanding.
Bad move by the jetplanes to trade for a guy who wanted a new deal then not give him a new deal, but expect him to suddenly like his deal.
Teams aren’t obligated to respect contracts either.
=======================
Of course they are obligated. If Mahomes, for example, is guaranteed $200M, then he is getting $200M.
“Teams aren’t obligated to respect contracts either.”
The terms of the contract say that they can be cut. They is respecting the contract. The player knows that when they sign it. It wouldn’t be likely but they could try to negotiate a no cut clause into the contract, but cutting when you are allowed to by the contract signed, doesn’t mean they aren’t honoring it.
And for those that don’t know, the guaranteed contracts issue is something the NFLPA negotiates in every CBA, so they obviously stay silent on that while securing other rights, it’s a trade off.
The Jets have offered him a deal but he wants the exact numbers that he’s asking for. I don’t see this as a problem with the Jets
It’s a real problem for the Jets. Aiyuk was allowed to seek contract offers from other teams and did so. No different than Reddick asking for a trade. The Jets screwed this up as they always do. Blame poorly run franchises; not the players.
It’s on the Jets for not prepping for Reddick’s demands properly, but I can guarantee he ain’t getting the deal he wants at this point.
The idiots around Chicago that write about the Bears are saying they should trade for him. That’s not gonna happen . He isn’t getting a raise here either at least not this year. All the idiots are saying Williams is a God, Booker is Richard Dent reborn and Blah , Blah , Blah after exactly 7 quarters. Yeah they looked good so far but it’s way too dumb to put anything into what’s happened so far. There’s reason for optimism but grab the reins people. Bears only have 12 million left and have to figure out a way to lose Nate Davis. If the Jets will take him they could probably make a deal. Otherwise I suggest just leaving Davis in KC after the last ex. Game.
Well, it really is just a matter of how Williams looks. If he’s close to 2023 Stroud (very possible) the Bears can be quite good. But the principle with Reddick himself is quite simple. If he won’t play you
can’t trade for him.
Yeah Bears don’t make sense. Who does is the Cardinals. They need an edge rusher. His got a connection with Gannon. Cards have the cap space. I’m not saying Cards are going to be a playoff team but I think they’ll be a headache to whomever they play.
Blah after exactly 7 quarters.
========================
I get the feeling that we will be hearing this five years from now. “Sure, Williams is an AP, but he’s only done it for 5 years. Let’s see him prove it for 5 more before we extend him”.
@Unclemike1525 I think the Jets would make that deal of Reddick for Davis at this juncture, if Chicago is willing. The Jets still require more depth upfront on the OL and have probably had their fill of Reddick’s demands.
Just don’t trade him…let him sit out
I truly wish a team would do this but they won’t. It would be fantastic to make an example of this guy, but it never seems to work out. And whatever happens, he’ll have all these fines dropped for whichever team he plays for. So it makes no sense to make a big deal about his “massive” fines.
I don’t understand. Why was he traded in the first place?
And if 2 teams have tried and failed to get a deal done with him, why would a 3rd team want to surrender draft capital to try it?
The Jets doing Jets things…
Reddick deserves a new deal. Reddick is not going to get one by sitting out.
I’m curious why you think he deserves a new deal. I have some guys doing work around the house, and on the car. I pay them what I agreed to pay them. I’ll use them more going forward, but I don’t adjust what I was contractually obligated to pay them.
Do we really need to respond to your comparison of an NFL star to the guys you pay to do your errands?
That’s fair, JoeBrady. I would agree-nobody really “deserves” money at the end if the day, if that’s how we’re looking at it-except for the fact that none of those guys in your example are working for what could be empty promises. I doubt that they’d accept the job if the subject of payment was unsettled. They’re going to be paid, the money is guaranteed. Reddick’s gripe revolves around that, and that is source of my sentiment. I think that he’s earned longer term security because he played well, and then he was traded-he didn’t exactly pick where he ended up, and this isn’t the team that he signed that contract with.
That said, I will reiterate the second half of my point: you won’t convince anyone to pay you if you’re not working. As others have said, Reddick still is on a deak, and ge can only build his appeal and his value by showing up to work. It won’t build a case to get what he wants.
He can get one. At the end of the year when his contract ends.
He can show up week 10 and still be a FA next year. The math is easy here. He might be out 10M this year, but he will easily get 30M guaranteed on his next deal – unless he blows out a knee or Achilles this year. For him this is a simple business decision.
He is honoring the contract which seems to confuse most if you. If he doesn’t show, he doesn’t get paid, is subject to fines, and can’t play for any other team. That’s all in the terms of the contract (per the CBA), same as the Jets can cut him and owe him nothing.
This is nuts lol.
Just read a story basically calling the Jets a ‘what if’ team. But he left out this saga! link to sbnation.com
The Jets suck until then prove otherwise. They’re the Dream Team Eagles.
I’m thinking of writing an article called ” What if the Jets actually became an NFL team”. Probably already been done.
no team is going to give the Jets what they laid to get Reddick – so Jets will have to stand pat. If I were Joey D, I’d rather lose a 3rd round pick then buckle, give Reddick a trade and get back a 4th round pick. Reddick can sit out and see what type of contract he gets as a 31yo who hasn’t played in a year. His agent is an idiot.
Refusing to play while under contract does not release you from the contract. If he doesn’t play this year, he’s under contract at the same rate next year.
He can sit out until week 1. The Jets won’t play him right away because he won’t be ready. When he is ready, he can play a game or two, then if he’s smart, he’ll go to the trainers with “lower back pain” and spend some time on the injured list. Would probably hurt his future earnings some, but it’d get him to free agency.
He’s already costing himself future earnings. Some teams will shy away from a guy unwilling to fulfill their contract, while there is some chance that his production will be lessened by not playing, as well as increasing the chance of an injury.
You’re 100% right – totally forgot that while I was ranting
Will the era of divas ever end?
Not when they are heavily supported and allowed to do this every year.
Ryan Poles needs to get on the phone
Bahahahahahaha!
Eagles dodged a big bullet and got something in return.
The Eagles are a well run franchise; the Jets aren’t.
I’m requesting a trade from my desk to any NFL team as a backup player to a backup player that is a backup to a backup!
Whoa!…backup.
You’ll have to play on your current contract…
I’ll then opt for a ‘sit in’ with minimal physical exertions….
I understand his position- he’s underpaid and wants a contract commensurate with his ability and production, but dude really has no leverage- if he doesn’t report he doesn’t get paid. Mostly a question of who blinks first, but the player has more to lose than the team.
In a situation like this a player has to give serious consideration to finding a new agent. It seems Reddick was led to believe the Jets would be open to a contract adjustment beyond just some incentives. Demanding a trade is a pretty drastic step. Perhaps if he’d got himself new representation it wouldn’t have gone that far.
Now that preseason games equate to game day checks and it means big $, the trade request is an act of desperation.
Perhaps there should be a complementary series to “Hard Knocks” called “Desperate Millionaires” 🙂
You’d have to do it by franchise.
So, your title, but at the end add “…of Cleveland.”

He probably doesn’t want to play for the Jets no matter how much they are offering. The Jets shouldn’t trade good capital for a player unless they know he wants to be there. They are a poorly run team for years and Aaron Rodgers isn’t the savior everyone thinks he will be.
We don’t actually know how AR will be on the Jets, but your seething hatred is noted.
Maybe anonymously poll the Jets players to see who else want more money or a trade out of town.
I wonder what Aaron Rodgers thinks about this situation…
Actually, no. No I don’t wonder at all.
I imagine Rodgers spends most of his time thinking of how he can build a pyramid with all the money he has earned from football.
Pyramid… or pyramid scheme maybe…
When in Egypt…
I think Rodgers is just thinking about his next smoke tent and what he can see in there. Should be cool.
Rodgers will tell you what he thinks anyway. He doesn’t care if anyone is interested.
guess the jets thought he’d be so enthralled at the chance to play for them .. he’d back down .. hope he gets every penny he’s asking for
Screw him! I hope the jets keep him. If he doesn’t play his value will go way down.
Jete going to Jete…
I’m so glad Howie traded him. One less source of drama…
Bears.
Maybe the Jets are just trying to keep the trade compensation to a 3rd round pick instead of it converting to 2nd round if Reddick hits certain snap count and sack metrics.
Don’t worry Jets’ fans, this isn’t as embarrassing as Bill B resigning from the HC gig writing it on a napkin!
The future Hall of Fame coach woke up and chose “savage” the morning of Jan. 4, 2000. As he approached the podium to be introduced as the Jets’ new head coach, Belichick grabbed a pen and a napkin and scribbled a note: “I resign as HC of the NYJ.”
Where is ChuckyNJ? He’s always in every thread dunking on other team’s dysfunctions but is always mysteriously absent on Jets posts.
Philly says thank you, no give backs!
