The Jets have at least the bulk of their 53-man roster in place as the countdown to Week 1 continues. Haason Reddick remains away from the team, however, and general manager Joe Douglas‘ comments on the matter do not suggest a resolution is imminent.
“Nothing has changed from our end,” Douglas said on Thursday (via Brian Costello of the New York Post). “Obviously [I have] a ton of respect for Haason and awaiting his arrival and, you know, looking forward to when he does, he’s going to be welcomed with open arms.”
The Pro Bowl edge rusher has one year remaining on his current deal. Failed attempts to land an Eagles extension resulted in a trade with the Jets being worked out. Brief communication with New York on a new contract took place, but no agreement was worked out. Team and player appeared ready to continue negotiating during the offseason; instead, no talks have taken place recently. That has led to $50K in mandatory daily fines being accumulated and no progress being made toward a resolution.
Reddick is still absent from the Jets after his trade request went public. Douglas – who insisted no consideration will be given to dealing him – has remained firm in his stance that no new negotiations will commence until Reddick reports to the team. The 29-year-old’s holdout could stretch into the regular season, although some time still remains for an extension to be hammered out or for incentives to be added for 2024.
“In simple terms, we did talk about an extension,” Douglas added. “Once one wasn’t agreed upon, we had the conversation and we felt good about making the trade. Obviously, he came here, reported [for an introductory press conference], had a great day here. And, again, we’re just awaiting his arrival.”
New York has a number of edge rushers in place, and the team’s front seven is expected to remain one of the stronger units in the league with or without Reddick in the fold. The veteran sack artist’s presence would be a major boost, however, considering Bryce Huff departed in free agency and John Franklin-Myers was traded during the draft. Reddick would be subject to missed game checks on a weekly basis if his holdout continued into September, something which appears to remain a distinct possibility.
Joe D – stand strong. Love Haason, but when a man signs a contract he needs to be a man and honor it. Play great and earn a big NEXT contract.
RutgersESQ, do you say the same thing about the teams when they cut these players before they make the money they were entitled to from these contracts?
The teams should just eat their losses and pay the money to those players and earn room for free agency AFTER what they agreed to play their current players.
Yes, because every contract has built-in guarantees. Being cut does not preclude a player from getting a contract elsewhere. Reddick signed a contract; he can bet on himself, have a great year, and get a new contract next year. There is also the cap to consider. This team is built to win this year, not in the coming years. They have an old QB and nothing in the wings that makes one think the future is bright. They don’t want to lock themselves in Reddick because they’re going to be bad in the next few years.
Redddick is betting betting on himself. He feels underpaid and his numbers prove that. So he’s a now show.
Its not his fault that the Jets are an incopmentant franchsie. Nor should he risk career injury to play for such a unproven organization w/o better compensation.
This standoff was 100% made by the Jets, not by the player. The Jets were not forced to trade for him.
Misspelling incompetent two times in the same word is the mark of someone who knows what they are talking about.
Misspelling words doesn’t take away from the Jets incompetence. I’m not being paid millions to build and run a franchise. They haven’t won since the 60’s. Don’t blame me for that.
The NFL players have themselves to blame for non guaranteed contracts. Back in 1987 so many players crossed the picket line essentially killing their union.
More than anything, I just wish they’d kept JFM around. I’m hopeful about McDonald, but they’re going to miss that beef on the edge that they can push inside. That’s not McDonald or Reddick.
Jimmy F$&@ing Moreland (JFM)?
The Jets’ bye week is Week 10, I believe, so he has until Week 9 to report before his contract tolls to the next season.
Since he hasn’t even shown up, forget him and move on. I wouldnt want him on my team.
It’s not like he just decided to run off to Egypt without telling anyone. He’s a good player who wants to be paid fair market value. Both sides will eventually work something out. The Jets defense is the key to them being successful this year.
J-E-T-S, jets jets jets!!!!
If he retires, do they get any draft compensation returned from Philly or supplementally from the league?
No. The only thing is the trade with the Eagles is conditional. I believe if Reddick plays a certain number of snaps or games for the Jets the trade goes from a 3rd round pick to a 2nd. The Eagles are rooting for Reddick to show up and play well.
He wanted out of PHI because they didn’t want to extend him so wtaf did NYJ think was going to be different when they traded for him?
Caveat Emptor Pendejos
Exactly! They rolled the dice and lost!
Reddick should just show up and get his money that is on his contract…15 million and then have the phantom calf injury or the Jets could just guarantee his money this year and if he walks next year so be it…he doesn’t have any guaranteed money left on his deal he signed with Philadelphia and he has already made 51 million in his career providing he plays this year…hard for anyone to feel sorry for him…I know I don’t.
Reddick has a legitimate gripe. He should still show up.
Unless he wants to retire, he is not going to be able to advertise his value and make a case for a new deal without showing up and playing well. It’s not fair to be traded after playing well for a team, and the Jets knew beforehand that Reddick didn’t want to go there without an extension. All of that is understood.
However, when Reddick walks into an eventual meeting to get signed, and someone says that they don’t have tape on him from last year, saying “Well, that’s because I didn’t show up.” is not going to win over any negotiators. He needs to play to get a deal, right or wrong. If he shows up and the Jets still refuse to do right by him, Reddick has a much more sympathetic case to future employers than if he doesn’t show at all. It’s not right or wrong, it’s just the circumstances that he’s now in.
I don’t understand how Douglas could execute this trade without having a complete, mutually agreed to plan. Literally requested out of Philly bc of the contract.
I’m sick of Joe D, he’s made far too many mistakes in a relatively short tenure
I admire the Jets for holding firm, however once they lose to the 49ers, we will see who blinks first. Reddick might help them avoid a possible 0-2 start but he doesn’t want to miss game checks as well. I think he will report before their second game against the Titans but the idea of hitting Brock Purdy again, has to be enticing.
