Amarius Mims could have his NFL debut delayed due to injury. The rookie Bengals right tackle is dealing with a strained pectoral muscle, head coach Zac Taylor said on Monday.

Taylor noted (via Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer) Mims will not require surgery, but the first-rounder will nevertheless be out for “several weeks.” That means Mims will not take part in the Bengals’ remaining preseason contests, and his availability for Week 1 is now in question. Taylor did not rule out Mims being able to suit up for the season opener, though.
In any event, missed training camp and preseason reps will be critical for Mims. The Georgia alum flashed considerable potential during his college career, but injuries limited his time on the field to a major extent. The 6-7, 330-pounder had impressed to date in training camp, however, and the door was open to him winning the starting RT gig over free agent signing Trent Brown.
The latter was added on a one-year deal featuring incentives this offseason. Brown has made 100 appearances and 93 starts in his career, but his signing was known to be part of a wider strategy on the Bengals’ part of finding a long-term answer at right tackle. As expected, Jonah Williams departed on the open market, creating the need for a stopgap option to be added and a developmental contributor to be drafted.
Mims will no doubt take over a starting role at some point relatively soon, especially if he manages to recover quickly. For now, attention will turn to his rehab process and Browns’ readiness to handle first-team duties if needed at the start of the campaign.
It’s bad enough he’s a very raw prospect. This doesn’t help.
He’s a raw prospect because he couldn’t stay healthy while in college. Naturally, he’s a 1st round pick.
Doesn’t look to raw flinging defensive lineman all over the field in training camp. Even Trent has to get off his butt to make sure he’s not gonna sit behind a rookie
From google: Mims played in 29 total games as a Bulldog and made eight starts
Wasted 1st round pick.
From me observing him in training camp. Mims tossing defensive lineman around like children. Playing as well as a seasoned veteran. He’ll be the steal of the draft. I remember when the Bengals drafted Munoz. His knees are gone, he’s had so many knee operations, he’s injury prone. Not comparing him to Munoz yet, but same old cries and criticism. I personally don’t have to Google him I’ve watched him play.
He didn’t last 1 preseason game. Sure he’s strong, but he can’t stay heathy. Naturally a poorly run team like the Bengals drafted in high.
You would think by now ensuring Joe doesn’t lead the league in sacks would be slightly important to the franchise, but then their brand new 1st round pick is already hurt.
On top of that, you mock his injury in your post below! Are you disagreeing w/ yourself?
It’s called satire or a parody sir. It’s the Bengals holding these players out for ignorant reasons, not the players fault. Used to be you suited up for the game unless you were missing body parts, now they are held out because of a blister or a hang nail. Teams want to protect their investments so much they end up being overly cautious.
Read the title of the story. He’s in danger of missing regular season games. He’s not built for the NFL game; he’s not durable. His career will be nothing because of that. Now he may play 8 seasons or so as a BU bouncing from team to team, but that’ll be his career.
Okay you win, he’s gonna suck ass and probably have to retire because of his strained pec. I’ll wait, watch and see. He’s not going to miss regular season games, but you know better. I only played the game for 12 years, and was an assistant football coach where I taught, but you obviously have a better eye. I bow to your experience, knowledge and expertise.
He missed more NCAA games than he played in. Now he’s going to be healthier, ha ha! Thanks for the laugh.
Anthony Munoz did.
Bengals better let that strained pec fully heal. Every d-lineman lining up against him is gonna give him a hard punch to that pec as their initial move.
These guys today are ridiculous. He has a strained pectoral muscle. Don’t remember Munoz, Willie Anderson, Bruce Reimers calling off because they got a strained pectoral muscle. I seen to remember a guy playing for the Rams who played the Super Bowl with a broken leg. Now we have guys missing 6 weeks for a bruised butt muscle or a split finger nail. How does this happen? “Coach, coach, my ti**y hurts something awful,” Sims says. “Are you sure you and Trent weren’t playing titty twister again,” Coach says. “No coach, I’m really in pain, couldn’t hardly lift my car to find my kitty cat,” Sims continues. Later on, “Well crap, Sims has a strained pec muscle, guess he’s out til the bye week,” Coach laments. “Put me in coach, I can do it, really, c’ mon c’mon,” cries Jackson Carmen.
Sorry, auto correct corrected Mims to Sims and I didn’t notice.
In a lot of these cases, it’s teams resting players with relatively minor injuries so that they don’t needlessly get exacerbated into major injuries.
It was meant to be funny, not a news report.
