Throughout the offseason, Yannick Ngakoue‘s name has frequently come up with respect to the Chicago. The Bears have indeed kept the journeyman edge rusher on their radar.
The Bears “have been talking with” Ngakoue, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated notes (video link). That comes as little surprise given the team’s lack of proven commodities along the edge who are currently projected to log playing time opposite Montez Sweat. The midseason trade acquisition is attached to a four-year, $98MM pact but the Bears could stand to add a veteran to pair with him.
Ngakoue signed a one-year, $10.5MM deal with Chicago last offseason, and he was a full-time starter during his debut campaign in the Windy City. A broken ankle ended the 29-year-old’s season, though, and limited him to a career-low four sacks. It comes as little surprise Ngakoue (never known for his run defense) remains on the market, although he is healthy and has been floated as a potential Bears target.
General manager Ryan Poles expressed confidence in Chicago’s in-house options at the defensive end spot last month. Earlier this week, however, a push was made to acquire Matt Judon from the Patriots. Chicago offered New England a third-round pick, the same price the Falcons were prepared to pay. When given the choice of destinations, Judon elected to head to Atlanta. It will be interesting to see if the Bears continue to show interest in the veteran edge market with roster cuts looming.
Ngakoue recorded at least eight sacks in each of his first seven seasons in the NFL. The former Jaguar, Viking, Raven, Raider and Colt drew interest at the start of training camps. He took visits with both the Dolphins and Panthers last month, but neither workout produced a deal. With time running out in the build-up to the regular season, Ngakoue is one of several veterans seeking a contract ahead of Week 1. The Bears have more than $21MM in cap space, so another short-term investment would be feasible from an economic standpoint.
He’s just a pass rusher specialist. Booker looks like he’ll be up to that role. Need a 3 down edge
Not much else left on the market. Poles will get him for a team friendly deal. Wonder why Judon picked ATL over CHI? Doesn’t want to play in snow?
Maybe he wanted to play in a warm client after being in Baltimore and new England
So he’ll be a cheaper worthless POS than he was last year? Comforting.
Can’t close off the edge.. Horrendous against the run.. Had 4 sacks last year- for $10 mill. Oh yes, by all means, sign him.
Look everybody rein it in huh? The Bears aren’t going to the Super Bowl this year. The focus should be on building not going ALL IN. None of these guys is going to make a big difference. We ave a rookie QB. Even if he’s CJ Stroud how far did they get? How many rookie QB’s have won the Super Bowl? Look keep building, and Next year a couple of SMART FA signings and some hole filling draft picks and a deep run is possible. The O Line still has holes and There’s learning to be done on Defense. Washington is one of the best D-Line coaches in football. Let him work it out. This isn’t the year to push all of the chips into the pot.
Oh crap. Can’t they just learn to say ” No Thanks”? Pretend you’re looking at 2 eggs frying in a pan.
What are the NY Giants cap situation like? He can be the new Justin Tuck
I just read the Patriots want him. Go get him please! if the Bears really want somebody they can get him on cut down day. In fact, They could probably get somebody better at the local Home Depot Parking Lot. And get a new Deck out of it too.
It can’t be easy finding something to pair with Sweat that doesn’t stink.
Hardy and Booker have proven they can best the other teams B/U’s. They need to see if they can beat KC’s starters if they play Thu. Even Robinson looks better since he added 15 lbs of muscle. Walker is steady if not spectacular. The main improvement will come from the Tackles who look pretty good. With Eric Washington here now I’m not worried about the D-Line as everybody else seems to be. Everybody just seems to want a name more than an actual good player. All that’s left is bums and malcontents. Who needs that? Play with the guys who have been here all summer. They’ve been pretty good so far. If an ACTUAL player gets cut then maybe get him. But if you didn’t learn this guy sucked last year, You might have a learning disability. If anything he got WORSE after Sweat got here then he got hurt. Sorry, I pass.
Maybe Carolina has someone they’ll give away for a song.
Would Chicago be willing to trade ♫ Saturday In The Park ♫ ?
The Bears should be talking with Haason Reddick’s agent – as the Jets would likely take a do-over offer to get him off the roster.
Yeah another malcontent. No thanks.
Dominique Robinson is a bust, besides Booker, and Gervon Dexter trying out at DE. They really have nobody else, what’s the least it could hurt. Also Ngakoue started to heat up towards the 2nd half of the season, until he broke his hand. We know he isn’t a run stopper, but I don’t see what it could hurt not to bring him back. Injuries are always a problem in the NFL, when something seems like a surety something happens, gotta have some kind of a backup plan.
