Uncertainty continues to loom over the status of Randy Gregory. The veteran defensive end was not in attendance for the start of Buccaneers training camp, and the team placed him on the reserve/did not report list Tuesday.
Gregory was absent from mandatory minicamp last month, a move which resulted in fines being accumulated. His absence came in the wake of the discrimination lawsuit he filed against the NFL and the Broncos over usage of a prescription medication which involved THC. Considering the latest development in his situation, Gregory’ absence does not come as a surprise.
Head coach Todd Bowles said last week he had not spoken with the 31-year-old in any capacity. Meanwhile, Greg Auman of Fox Sports notes there has been no update provided by Gregory’s camp with respect to why he has not attended camp. Needless to say, his future in Tampa Bay is very much in question at this point.
Gregory did not pan out in Denver, logging just 10 games during his time with the Broncos across the 2022 and ’23 seasons. He finished out the year in San Francisco, making 12 appearances and recording 2.5 sacks. The former Cowboys second-rounder signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers worth up to $5MM. His earnings for the year have already been affected by the fines (totaling more than $100K) he accumulated by missing minicamp, however.
Tampa Bay guaranteed $1.37MM of Gregory’s base salary, but the team would save just over $1.6MM in cap space with a release. It will be interesting to see if an update takes place in this case over the coming days or if the Buccaneers elect to cut bait if Gregory remains away from the team.
If you’re looking for him just roll down your window and get a dog with a good nose and start at his house. He must be on his sofa doing two at a time as his anxiety disorder must be flappin in the breeze about now.
This guy’s clown costume is almost as bright as AB’s
I didn’t even know TB signed him.
Neither does Gregory.
I’m shocked!
Such potential seemingly wasted on cannabis
To be fair, there is a decent chance that he’s so baked that he has no idea that training camp has started yet.
What a waste. All that weed wasted on Gregory.
I don’t care about his pot smoking personally the NFL takes a harder stance on pot than guys that get DUIs that can obviously afford to pay for transportation but that being said Gregory’s issues are deeper than pot. A guy just goes mia in mini camp and training camp pretty easy decision you let him go
Randy Gregory is lazy that’s all it is. All this potential to be great and threw it all away. I’m surprised he keeps getting chances. All these teams thinking they can help him. He’s a lost cause. He’s made his millions he’s happy. Plus if he wins his lawsuit he’ll still be paid.
Randy’s a slug
Why even sign the deal then? Either Gregory is avoiding the team intentionally because he considers part of his legal strategy, or he lost interest in playing. In the first case, he probably should have planned for this and it makes no sense to seek a job this year. In the latter…again, why even sign up?
Because he needs weed money. Unless they give it away now. He couldn’t get a real job. Maybe Wal Mart Greeter but that won’t get you a lot.
So many people blaming the weed. It’s not the weed, it’s the person.
I haven’t seen one commenter here blaming the weed. They’re all blaming Gregory.
Thinkin on that – players start being the center of attention in high school, intensifies in college and when they hit the pros their egos have been pampered so much some must expect ‘rules’ should be adjusted to their personal preferences. Randy has acted out since being drafted.
Reality, rules are defined for the majority (common sense) and adjustments for minority interests generates ‘special treatment’ which is a plague that doesn’t stop until every interest has been placated, however it also manifests new and bizarre ‘specials’.
