Brandon Aiyuk has not landed the long-term deal he is seeking, nor has his recent trade request resulted in a change of scenery. The 49ers wideout will nevertheless be in attendance for the start of training camp.
Aiyuk reported to camp on Tuesday, as noted by Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Many players seeking a new deal (or a trade) often remain absent as a means of exerting leverage and forcing a resolution. Instead, Aiyuk will be present for summer practices; it would come as no surprise, though, if he staged a hold-in by attending but not taking part in any on-field work.
Questions have been in place throughout the offseason regarding whether or not Aiyuk would remain in San Francisco for the 2024 season and beyond. The 26-year-old drew considerable interest at the draft, with at least five teams being prepared to meet his asking price on a long-term contract. No trade was worked out, and the 49ers are not interested in exploring a deal at this point in the offseason. A distinct lack of progress on the negotiating front led to this situation’s latest escalation.
Aiyuk – who on a number of occasions has voiced his displeasure over the absence of an extension via social media – requested a trade one week ago. A recent meeting with team officials did not produce traction toward an agreement, though as expected San Francisco still views him as a key part of the 2024 roster. General manager John Lynch confirmed (via Garafolo) the 49ers “fully intend” to keep the Arizona State product in the fold for at least the coming season.
The team is believed to be eyeing an agreement between $26 and $27MM per season, a figure which would move Aiyuk into the top 10 in receiver compensation. His asking price has shifted over the course of the offseason, however, one in which three wideouts (Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown and Amon-Ra St. Brown) surpassed $30MM in annual compensation. The former first-rounder is currently slated to play out his $14.12MM fifth-year option in 2024.
San Francisco has a number of big-money offensive skill position contracts on the books already, and the team will have a Brock Purdy extension to attend to as early as next offseason. The 49ers added Ricky Pearsall in the first round of this year’s draft, but for now signs continue to point to Aiyuk (who could be franchise tagged in 2025) playing a fifth campaign in the Bay Area.
So the niners will be nearly 40 million over the cap in 2025, wonder how they will manage to franchise tag him next year?
They currently have over 30 million they can roll over. A kittle extension next year saves 10 million, they can restructure Trent and save 14 million. Deebo/Hargrave cut/trade can save them 17&20 mill, but that’s post June 1st
But they’re also going to have to give Purdy a serious raise.
We’re talking about 2025, not 2026. He’s extension eligible next year, he’s still under contract though
They’re going to have to give him a raise when he’s eligible. Even with performance bonuses and playoff money, they’re going to have paid him less than $4 million total over the first three years of his career. They’re not going to have him play out 2025 as their starting QB at less than $1.5 million.
Who said they aren’t paying him? He’s under contract next year, thanks for citing nothing though. He’ll sign an extension, but the most he’ll get is a signing bonus that year. Judging by the niners previous contracts it’s gonna be backloaded, and it’ll be easily restructured. He’s there for the next decade barring a rebuild
He’ll presumably have a higher cap hit in 2025 than he’s currently slated to have with a new contract.
I don’t see Purdy making 1.1 million next season but i don’t see him making over 10 million either. They will add some of that signing bonus up front but Lynch will make it all work out.
Way to come to your senses Brandon!
This year could possibly be the last legitimate time you have a shot at being on a winning SB team. Next year. Oof. With Purdy up for extension, money to keep everyone happy significantly dwindles … starting in 2025 its gonna get sketchy as to how SF will be competitive.
Swallow your pride, bust hump, get that ring and them following season go for that mega contract.
They don’t care about Superbowls, they want to get paid!
Did McCaffrey not care about a Super Bowl because he negotiated for more money and reset the RB market this offseason even though he was under contract and he’s already made tens of millions of dollars?
I’d like to think otherwise Plus3, but I hear ya. Fuming here in Baltimore that Clowney took the more money route with Carolina. The guy already is a multi millionaire. Should’ve stayed a Raven where there’s a more realistic chance of being a SB contender.
Just watched NYG Hard Knocks. Schoen had no problem signing Runyon and Eleomunor because he sweetened the pot for them a little. They had zero loyalty to their teams. Then the whole Barkley thing. Barkley didn’t go to Philly because they were Philly, because they offered more money. Fans don’t understand these guys have a small window to make as much as they can.
Kyle Shanahan is presumably still there.
Some pieces may change, and there may be a slight dip, but I think SF is in the conversation for a while.
“Leverage? What leverage?”
Tight ham string leverage.
Aka BS with a side of fries leverage
Players are really not that smart. If he signed an extension for $26-28 million, that would kick in this year, giving him a $14m raise this year. Instead he will play for $14million and attempt to get $30m per year on his next deal. The $14m extra he would make this year is more than the $2-3m he is haggling about over the course of a 3-4 year deal. He is literally losing money by not accepting the slightly less AAV. These kids allegedly went to college? Sad.
More is more and less is less. I’m not sure where you learned math, but these “kids” have lawyers and agents to help with the math part.
Which college made you so unprepared to understand this situation, Highwaymenace?
His comments on hoops rumors are even more nonsensical.
Thank you for pointing out the fact that he can be franchise tagged in 2025. They still have him for two more seasons
They’re not on track to be able to afford to franchise him in 2025.
Guys gotta get paid now. 49ers are on a slide. They will over use Debo to increase trade value. He’s gonna lose big.
Trade him now. Before he injures himself trying to ramp up late in training camp.
