A number of quarterbacks have landed extensions during their first year of eligibility. Trevor Lawrence is aiming to join that group by hammering out a deal with the Jaguars this offseason, and progress is believed to have been made on that front recently.
The former No. 1 pick has had an up-and-down tenure to date in the NFL. Lawrence nevertheless represents a young signal-caller in line to approach the top of the position’s market on his next pact. Joe Burrow currently leads the way with an annual average value of $55MM, and Jared Goff‘s recent extension ranks second at $53MM. A Lawrence accord could fall between the two in terms of value while consisting of a similar structure to the Goff pact.
The 24-year-old is under contract through 2025 given the Jaguars’ decision to pick up his fifth-year option. That gives team and player plenty of time to reach an agreement, but Lawrence’s preference would be to have a deal worked out before training camp next month. Jacksonville is moving with urgency on the negotiation front, so that goal may be attainable.
“That would be ideal just to put it behind us and keep moving and feel good about that going into training camp,” Lawrence said of an extension (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk). “But either way, like I said before, I have the same job.”
Lawrence has been in attendance for the Jaguars’ OTAs, and that will no doubt continue through mandatory minicamp. His camp along with Jacksonville’s front office will have time after that to continue negotiations, especially with the team’s other top financial priority (an extension for edge rusher Josh Allen) out of the way. Other extensions for the likes of Dak Prescott and Tua Tagovailoa could take place along a similar timeline to the Lawrence one, and it will be interesting to see the effects each deal has on the other.
He’s one of those quarterbacks who is quite literally serviceable, he isn’t great and he isn’t bad, he’s just…OK.
Just saw, Larry Allen passed away @52 today, was a big man. RIP
Jags need to pay him sooner rather then later. Price for QB’s is just going up. He hasn’t lived up to the hype but he is a solid starter.
Jags were 8-3 after 12 weeks last season. The team seem to fall apart because of injuries but they were the #1 team in the AFC South after 12 weeks if I am remembering correctly.
Let’s play a round of would you rather.
1. Tua at 52 million apy
2. Lawrence at 52 million apy
Neither are top 10 QB’s but have to be paid like they are.
Who would you have?
Trevor for health reasons. Plus he’s done a bit more w/o dynamic WR duo Tua has.
Id agree.
I still feel like we are waiting for the next step from Lawrence – but Im doubtful its coming.
Trevor has had next to nothing to work with most years and has still been, at worst, decent. Tua has 2 of the top receivers in the game and an arguably better O-line and has been, at best, above average.
Trevor all day. I still think he can approach what was expected of him given a beater supporting cast.
I have big hopes for his new WR the got in the 1st round.
Yeah, he was the guy I wanted for Josh.
Instead we get the guy with a great personality and no separation skill.
Lawrence, easy. And I say that as someone who thinks Tua gets a little too much grief on here. Setting aside health concerns, Tua has had one of the most dynamic play callers in football and two number one caliber receivers. Lawrence hasn’t been great, but he also hasn’t really been given any of the things that really elevate QBs.
Can you believe I actually thought the Bengals should take a crap load of draft choices and trade down from number 1 ( Burrow) and then draft Tua? I missed so hard on that I feel like Mel Kiper.
Haha.
As my favorite draft analyst says: If you are not missing you are not scouting.
I was pissed at the Josh Allen pick when it happened, I stormed out of the bar. Glad to be wrong!
To my way of thinking he’s got to prove something before he gets an extension. After watching quite a few Jaguars games I’m not convinced he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. He looks invincible at times then looks like an overmatched scrub twenty minutes later. Not sure what the solution is, but I sure wouldn’t be comfortable dropping 50 million a year in his lap if I was the owner.
Yeah. He has his moments, but seemingly has exactly opposite moments in equal measure.
Most of the time he is just fine.
If I am the GM, Im at least considering moving on.
These middle tier guys can really screw you up.
The downside of throwing $50MM at Lawrence is that it will tempt Blake Bortles into making a comeback attempt.
Blake Bottles? How about Mark Brunell? Best QB they’ve ever had by far.
I generally don’t like QBs but Brunell had a LBs mentality rather than the prima donna attitude most passers have…so it was easy to like him.
Lawrence is going to want big money – but he hasn’t shown anything more than mid-level talent to this point.
