The Patriots completely revamped their QB depth chart this offseason, but there is still one holdover at the position. 2022 fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe is still kicking around at the bottom of New England’s roster, but it remains to be seen if the third-year pro will still be on the squad come September.
Zappe has had an uneven two years in New England, although the Western Kentucky product hasn’t looked completely helpless in his handful of starts. During his rookie season, he sparked a brief QB controversy after guiding New England’s woeful offense to a pair of victories. However, Zappe slid back down the depth chart when Mac Jones returned from injury, and the Patriots were expected to continue with that same hierarchy for the 2023 campaign.
Zappe ended up struggling under new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, leading to him being a surprise cut towards the end of the preseason. The second-year QB quickly landed on New England’s practice squad, and he was signed back to the active roster in early September. Still, the roster machinations proved that the Patriots were willing to let the player walk for nothing, and the apparent lack of interest from opposing squads proved their wasn’t a whole lot of league-wide intrigue in the signal-caller.
The backup QB managed to bounce back and (somewhat) rehabilitate his image during the 2023 campaign. With Jones and the Patriots offense continuing to struggle, Zappe ended up garnering six starts in New England. His numbers weren’t pretty (59.9 completion percentage, 2.8 touchdown percentage, 4.2 interception percentage), but he was notably under center for two of the team’s four wins. While nobody is confusing Zappe with a starting quarterback, the player at least proved that he wouldn’t compromise his team’s chances if inserted into the lineup.
With the Patriots navigating a post-Bill Belichick era this offseason, the organization decided to completely revamp their QB room. The team used the third-overall pick on Drake Maye, pairing the rookie with veteran acquisition (and old friend) Jacoby Brissett. The organization also used a sixth-round selection on Joe Milton III, a series of moves that seemed to push Zappe off the roster. Reports from earlier this offseason indicated that the Patriots wanted to resolve their QB jam as quickly as possibly, allowing the coaching staff to better evaluate their three sure-thing QBs. That could have led to a speedy cut for Zappe, but the QB is still sticking around the roster.
While the Patriots could claim that Zappe is competing with Milton for the QB3 role, there’s little chance the rebuilding squad will prefer the third-year player to the rookie. So, it seems more likely that the organization is holding on to Zappe until a QB-needy team comes knocking. Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald indicated as much last month, noting that a Zappe trade remains a possibility for the organization. While teams didn’t show interest in Zappe last year, Callahan believes there could be a market for the player in the coming months, especially as teams face injuries during the preseason.
Callahan suggests that the Patriots could fetch a late-round pick in return for Zappe, or the front office could attach a pick to the QB for a better return. Considering the player’s track record, Zappe would probably be more appealing to teams that lose key backups vs. those that lose a starting QB. Of course, in order for the Patriots to avoid a staring match where a Zappe suitor simply awaits the player’s inevitable release, New England would require multiple trade partners to join the fray. Zappe’s most-recent deal with the Patriots keeps him under contract through the 2024 campaign on an easily-manageable $985K cap hit.
It seems like a foregone conclusion that Bailey Zappe won’t be sticking around New England for the 2024 campaign. However, it remains to be seen if the front office will be able to garner a return for the impending third-year QB.
Trade candidate? You mean cut. Nobody is even giving up a 7th for Zappe and it doesn’t matter if you add a pick to his deal. Is Ben Levine a Boston homer?
Ben Levine is one of the many sports writers that has built a career on articles consisting of “The Patriots are great” “The Patriots are the smartest franchise” “The Patriots can do no wrong” and “Why The Patriots are the greatest organization in all of sports”.
He has never had to actually think about player value, draft consequences, or results of personnel moves. Everything was always defended by “The Patriot Way” and Ben has yet to adapt.
I sense some bitterness here. Perhaps you wanted Ben Levine to build his career on articles consisting of “The Raiders are lousy” The Raiders are the dumbest franchise” The Raiders can do no right and “Why the Raiders will never amount to anything with Mark Davis in charge” 🙂
There is no bitterness here, just an observation of pattern behavior.
Also, Ben Levine is a touch late to the table for building a career on Raider defamation. Peter King mastered that routine into a very comfortable retirement. It worked so well that he handed the onslaught of slander to Mike Florio to move forward.
Is there anyone not part of the conspiracy? lol.
The Jags gave up a 6th for a comparable QB on the exact same team. Remember that teams have given up valuable picks for QBs like Brad Johnson, Rob Johnson, Sam Darnold, Carson Wentz, washed versions of Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper, etc. It’s not absurd to believe someone might bite for a low cost.
Those QBs were either 1st round talents or showed glimpses. Zappe was cut multiple times in some Belichick roster moves and no team took a flyer.
Rob Johnson showed glimpses? He was about as effective as Zappe while starting. Lasted about as long, too.
Darnold didn’t really show glimpses in NY. Watched every one of his games and I had and continue to have about the same amount of faith in him as Zappe. He was traded pretty much solely due to “potential,” which was silly because it was obvious which way he was trending at that point.
Glimpses also don’t matter with the three washed up QBs. Every fan knew they were over the hill yet there was a GM in all three instances who thought they were smarter than everyone else and still pulled the trigger. In this case, all it takes is for another ego-driven GM to make a decision on Zappe.
You all act like it’s never happened before lol every six months there’s a post on here where everyone claims it’ll never happen, then it does.
Why would anyone give anything up for Zappe? haha just wait for him to be cut.
If your season is going to depend on a mid season transaction for Bailey Zappe, your season is lost.
I agree with you, yet it it still happens fairly frequently because organizations hate waiving the white flag. Josh Dobbs last season, for example.
Yes if injuries play a huge role. AZ had Dobbs starting but once Murray was back he was going to be a back up.
Minn lost Cousins, then Hall was hurt his first game, and I don’t recall if Mullens got beat up. When the Dobbs luster fell off they played Mullens.
Zappe is a 3rd string back up, while Dobbs was a “Starter” so easier to take that chance.
But Dobbs was also traded from being a backup in Cleveland to starter in Arizona. No one saw that coming and nearly everyone else (including me) said the same thing: why give up prospect capital for Dobbs instead of signing a FA off the street?
There are a boatload of reasons why certain roster moves are made. Maybe Zappe has a connection to a QB coach, OC, staff member or HC on a different team in the NFL who will vouch for him and get him there for a conditional 7th. Wouldn’t shock me.
I mean maybe a depth piece for the eagles behind pickett and hurts
Trade candidate? The guy who cleared waivers last year?
you may want to delete this article
Who is writing these articles? Zappe has zero trade value.
What is his trade value?
Wasn’t he on the practice squad?
Zappe had 3 touchdowns and a 115.2 passer rating against the Steelers so they are likely to be the team most interested in this guy.
New England wants three quarterbacks on the roster for next year. They are for now something happens to Drake May, Jacoby, Brissett or Joe Milton before the season starts the patriots will need Bailey Zappe.
Zappe and a 6th might get you a pair of future 7th round picks… maybe… there are worse back ups out there. Well… maybe.
Just another reason why this site’s authors are a colossal joke. Nobody claimed Zappe when on waivers last yr, no one is going to trade for him
He’s reporting what Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald indicated/suggested. Couldn’t take two minutes to read the article before bashing the messenger, huh?
These guys that complain about FREE content are the colossal joke.
This isn’t traderumors content… they aggregate the info from around the web…
Jerry Jones might be interested – as he doesn’t seem to know how to evaluate QB talent.
Levine is only reporting what’s out there rumors-wise. I’m sure that others have opined on the possibilities with Zappe, however likely or unlikely they are. The Pats apparently expect that someone will offer something for Zappe. I don’t think that he’s much good, or an improvement over what a team could find itself in free agency or on a practice squad, but he does have a little starting experience. That will add interest in places where it wouldn’t be otherwise. While I get the sentiment (particularly the waivers comment), we’ve seen worse players get traded and/or signed.
I’m on record stating how I don’t consider Zappe a dominant player, or better than his much maligned predecessor in New Engkand. But would I be shocked to see him swapped for a low level pick? No, not at all. A lot of the time, acquiring players is more about “who’s available?” than it is “who’s good?” for teams.
People also said nobody would trade for Mac Jones or Zac Wilson.
Pre season rolls around, someone gets hurt or some team isn’t happy with bu play, pats trade Zappe and a 7th for a 6th.
Cowboys (better BU than Lance)
Chargers (better BU than Stick)
Packers (better BU than Sean Clifford)
Could improve the BU situation.
People thought both could get moved. They were never getting moved for near their original draft position. That was more of the hang up.
Possibly outside the website
Certainly not on this website

I hope I never see Zappe in a Patriot uni again, period.
