One of the most impactful moves of the offseason for both the Bills and Texans was the trade which sent Stefon Diggs from Buffalo to Houston. The deal came about in short order with the Pro Bowl wideout’s former team originally expecting to keep him for at least the 2024 campaign.
Diggs himself seems to have had a different outlook on that front, however. When speaking to the media for the first time as a member of the Texans, he addressed the end of his Bills tenure. The 30-year-old said of a trade, via ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime, that he felt “it was going in that direction.”
Tension (real or perceived) between team and player was a regular occurrence in the case of Diggs’ four-year run in Buffalo. He still managed to enjoy plenty of success there with 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns, production which led to four straight Pro Bowl invites and a first-team All-Pro nod in 2020. Once the Texans presented a trade package involving a 2025 second-round pick, though, the Bills elected to move on.
In doing so, Buffalo incurred a dead cap charge of just over $31MM. General manager Brandon Beane has since confirmed the team’s preference was to absorb that record-breaking amount (for receivers) all at once rather than spreading it out over multiple years. While that approach will create considerable spending power in 2025, questions have been raised about the Bills’ receiver room this year.
By contrast, the Texans have added Diggs to a unit already featuring Tank Dell – who had a strong rookie campaign when healthy last season – and Nico Collins. The latter had a breakout season in 2023, and it earned him a lucrative extension. Diggs was attached to a big-ticket deal of his own, but Houston agreed to remove the post-2024 years of his contract. The former fifth-rounder is thus on track for free agency next offseason, and much of his value will depend on his ability to fit in well with his new team. Diggs’ remarks in that regard have been encouraging early on.
“They’re very welcoming,” he said of the Texans. “Very open arms, and I just feel like it’s important for me to be a part of things like that. It’s genuine. You thrive in that space. You thrive in a space where you’re loved. Thrive in a space of being around those who truly care and truly want to see you win.”
My over under on his yards vs the Bills in their game is 185.
He hasn’t scored more than 182 in a game, so highly unlikely as the #3 receiver.
If we’re doing over/unders I would like to put out that Week 10 is the over/under for when Diggs wears out his welcome in Houston. I’ll take the under. He’ll be complaining about his lack of targets by Week 8.
I’ll take the under.
The prototypical diva-type receiver we see in the league these days. Always seemed to have more concern about his catches and targets than team success. Yeah, not rocket science to expect a trade when you’ve worked hard to alienate your team
Yep, without Allen having his back he never would have received another contract in Buffalo. Burned so many bridges even among fans who wanted to believe Minnesota was an anomaly. Good luck Texans.
No denying the talent. No denying the me first attitude either.
It was always about him – wrapped around in a thin veil of “ I only care about winning!”
He was loved in Buffalo – despite his antics. Many Bills fans are still willfully ignorant of his flaws.
But, how bad was it behind the scenes for Beane to make the trade? Josh said all the tight things, but they didn’t make this move without his approval.
And lets not forget how the second half of last year he was near non-existent. Huge drop against KC toi.
I suspect his best days are behind him. That isn’t to say he wont be good, just don’t expect elite.
Texans redoing his contract is Weird too. That says something – Im just not quite sure what. They traded a second round pick for him, and immediately made it a one year deal. Ive hears speculation that they wanted the best Diggs for one year – that makes little sense to me.
Im upset he was traded leaving a gigantic hole to be filled in Joshs prime. Now we have a collection of “hope for the best” guys instead. Im also very open to it being a good move in the end though.
But if Im also being honest – I was glad he was a part of the team, but I never quite loved him the way some other fans did. I don’t care for the diva attitude.
I agree with your statement but let me add one more important point.
Beane seems to get out in front of players declines and still get some form of compensation for them.
By moving him this year the money is almost a push with what he would have been paid AND NOW the Bills are free of his money year.
That will be huge to build and maintain around Allen
Lastly Brady who won 6 superbowls did so with mostly what would have been thought to be 2nd and 3rd tiers WRs with a GREAT TIGHT END and versatile RB’s
Almost the mix the Bills have set up this yr
We had Antonio Brown here in Pittsburgh and I had to shake my head at your posting. Everything you mentioned could have applied to his time here. Especially wondering what was going on in the locker room when reporters weren’t around
Kind of makes me appreciate their head coaches a bit more
Yeah Brady did. BUT Allen is no Brady. Bills will fight for the playoffs and may make it. But I still don’t trust Allen.
Title for the post is a bit confusing for someone who wouldn’t know that he’s already on the Texans, or how the Bills could still trade him.
I thought Dallas would trade for Diggs. Not sure why they didn’t.
Yep he wined his way outta here(MN). I was angry at him for a while. Thank God we got JJ in the next draft. It helped me forget.
