Darren Waller has yet to make a final decision on his playing future. As things stand, though, it would come as a surprise if the Giants tight end continued his playing career in 2024.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports Waller is likely to make a retirement decision no later than next week’s mandatory minicamp. The team’s position is that he is leaning toward hanging up his cleats rather than suiting up for a second campaign in New York. The 31-year-old’s future has been in doubt throughout the offseason, and he has not taken part in OTAs.
Waller spoke about his situation in April, stating a final call may have been made prior to the draft. That did not happen, but he has pledged to inform the team of his decision before the break between mandatory minicamp and the start of training camp in July. New York’s minicamp will run from June 11-13, meaning clarity on the situation should arise by that point.
As Raanan notes, the Giants are proceeding as if Waller deciding to play would be a “pleasant surprise.” The former Pro Bowler posted a second consecutive 1,000-yard season in 2020, but he has been beset by hamstring injuries for much of the time since. His trade from the Raiders to the Giants brought about expectations for a rebound, but he was limited to 12 games and one touchdown catch. New York has made preparations for a Waller-less tight end room this offseason.
The team still has 2022 fourth-rounder Daniel Bellinger (who has started 24 of his 29 games) on his rookie pact. He is joined by free agent additions Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz as well as Theo Johnson, who was drafted in the fourth round. That group will look to serve as capable pass catchers if Waller does indeed elect to hang up his cleats.
The latter is on the books for three more years, but none of his remaining salaries are guaranteed. The Giants would generate $11.63MM in cap space against a dead money charge of $2.46MM by moving forward with a post-June 1 release. If Waller decides to end his playing tenure, he will depart the NFL with just over $42MM in career earnings.
Yikes, what a bum.
We all expected Waller to retire. Just as I suspect we’ll see his name in year or two wanting to return to nfl cause he blew through all his money. He was, is, and will still be a turd. Giants should consider themselves lucky.
How lucky when the Giants inept GM, the Gettleman wannabe, wasted a high third round pick to trade for him a year ago??
Actually it was the Chiefs compensatory 3rd round pick, between the 3rd and 4th round, not a high 3rd rounder.
Damn. A turd? As a Raider fan hes actually not a bad guy. Maybe he didn’t pan out in NY but he’s far from a turd. The dude got fined 30k by the NFL during covid season for hosting a charity event because Waller didn’t require masks. I think the real turd is Godell and the NFL higher ups.
Guessed he would after his cringe song and music video. Put together a pretty solid career tho as a 6th round pick.
Junkie
A “Gruden bust”
So….
Gruden signed Waller from Baltimore in 2018 after seeing him warm up on the field before a game in week 4. Waller was not even a starter at that point.
Darren Waller by far had his best production under Gruden. Waller was a flat out beast that demanded attention from every D-Cord in the NFL from 2019-2021. Waller’s production fell off the radar after Gruden’s fall out with the NFL.
Maybe Jon Gruden was a motivator that connected with Darren Waller. Just because Gruden brought out Waller’s best, doesn’t make him a bust.
Just because Gruden brought out Waller’s best,
=======================
I think it was more that Waller gave up the drugs. Coming out of college, Waller’s measurables were very similar to Bowers.
far from that. Gruden got him for pretty much nothing and Waller turned out to be a stud while in LV. I’d say it was a NYG bust. Not all people like playing in NY.
I saw the inspection report on his vehicle.
His tires fall below the acceptable threshold.
Waller will have to RE TIRE.
I enjoyed his time in Oakland, but at the end, he didn’t seem as intense. Maybe it was the injuries, but he went from AP to “okay” pretty quickly.
Waller needs to head to Chicago where he could play to age 40 like Marcedes Lewis…lol.
Lot of hate but every interview I’ve seen with him shows a pretty cool guy who faced his addiction issues. He could have been out of the league with his issues but he did his best to come back with the Raiders.

Lot of hate
======================
I think a lot of this is probably just Giant fans thinking that they got a AP for a 3rd rounder, instead of getting a player in decline.
He was great for my Raiders, but between the injuries, and the bad coaching, I think he got worn down.
Giants burned a 3rd round pick to get 11 starts and 552 yards from this chump.
Divorced and now retiring hopefully he can find something to stay busy and positive.
Darren Waller is like the Hyman Roth of the NFL… the only difference is Roth was always allegedly dying from the same Heart Attack for years …. whereas Waller has been retiring from the same unknown reason from the Giants for years
Hyman Roth was a very successful and shrewd operator though. Perhaps Waller is more like Fred Sanford who would grab his chest and fake a heart attack while saying “This is the big one, Elizabeth! I’m coming to join ya, honey,”
I guess it all depends on your perspective
They only got like 550 yards from him after all the hype…more like one of Archie’s burps when he asks for his bicarb versus even one of Fred’s fake heart attacks.
