In the build-up to the draft, the Steelers were frequently connected to a wide receiver trade. No such move took place over the weekend, though, and Pittsburgh has not been active in the post-draft wave of free agency to date.
The Steelers placed a heavy emphasis on the offensive line, using first- (tackle Troy Fautanu), second- (center Zach Frazier) and fourth- (guard Mason McCormick) round selections up front. The team also added a wideout by taking Michigan alum Roman Wilson in the third round, but there is room in the lineup for an experienced pass-catcher to play opposite George Pickens. As veteran dominoes have fallen in recent days, however, Pittsburgh has not added at the position.
Michael Gallup, DJ Chark and Odell Beckham Jr. have each landed one-year deals this week, thinning out the pool of available options. With a blockbuster trade involving either Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel no longer an option based on 49ers general manager John Lynch‘s recent comments, it would come as a surprise if Pittsburgh pulled off a player swap at this time. Indeed, Steelers GM Omar Khan confirmed during a Pat McAfee Show appearance that nothing is currently imminent regarding a receiver addition (video link).
One of the top free agents still on the market is Tyler Boyd, who was linked to his hometown team early in free agency. Pittsburgh now faces plenty of competition for the ex-Bengal’s services, though, and the team’s price point on a contract offer remains too low for a deal to be worked out. On that point, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic notes the Steelers are not prepared to offer a multi-year pact, something Boyd is seeking (subscription required). For that reason, Kaboly confirms a Boyd-to-Pittsburgh agreement is still “highly unlikely” at this time.
In addition to Pickens and Wilson, the Steelers’ WR room features the likes of Calvin Austin, Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, Marquez Callaway and Denzel Mims. With over $18MM in cap space, the team could afford to bring in another option, but it will be interesting to see if Khan pursues one of the remaining veterans or allows the current group to compete for roster spots in training camp.
What’s the point of an expensive WR if you don’t have a QB that can get them the ball? Some dude off the street will work for their roster.
Just stop and look up Wilson’s stats last year compared to some of the others in comp % TD-INT and take into consideration he was held out of games.
Not saying he’s a savior but he’s an upgrade over what they had
Wilson was dumped back to back by 2 borderline HoF HC’s w/o mercy. Glad he made his money, but his ‘prime’ was handing the ball off to Lynch and a stout D.
If he actually wanted a positive legacy, he would have handed the ball to Marshawn. Beast mode was clearly the best player on the field and HUNGRY!! 2 rings looks awesome on the resume for Canton, instead of 1-1 w/ a goal line pick to end the game.
Not just handing the ball to Lynch, but also scrambling around the backfield to make plays, which he can’t do anymore.
I agree with all of that but the only part that’s really relevant to Wilson being the Steelers qb for this season was when you said his prime was handing the ball off with a great D.
Steelers replaced arguably the worst OC in the last 20 years with Arthur Smith who wants to and has a history of success running the football. They also added 3 OL early in the draft and have two really good running backs. The defense carried the team to the playoffs last year and added Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson to play between Watt and Highsmith replacing the street free agents and practice squad guys who finished the season starting at ILB. Not overly worried about Russell Wilson, kinda sounds like he’s entering his prime again.
Anyone calling plays for a young D Henry would look like a genius. Just like everyone thought N Hackett was awesome calling plays for Rodgers, but w/o him well under .500 as HC in Den, and OC last year w/ the Jets. Same for Josh McDaniels calling plays for Tom. Not quite as good in Den, or his lone OC year in St. Louis, back in NE after Tom left, and flamed out drastically again as HC in Vegas. Really helps having a HoF player(s) to call plays for, not having one show your coaching skills.
Smith’s offense’s were boring in Atlanta and was widely mocked by everyone; fans, media, & other coaches for not utilizing 1st round picks London, Pitts, and Robinson enough.
His run game in Atlanta was pretty good using Cordelle Patterson and Tyler Allegier.
So I’m sure the Steelers will have a decent run game.
Far as Wilson and WRs. I think Steelers have a better fit for Wilson at WR than Denver did.
Going back to his Seattle days Wilson operated with small quick guys Baldwin Tate Lockett and a big bodied target to compliment them.l plus a run game.
Denver really didn’t have that and the offense didn’t play to that style.
I do think Roman Wilson and Georgen Pickens fit the Seattles style under Wilson better. But really Steelers just need him to be a game manager at this point. Limit turn overs make a few key passes to keep drives alive. Don’t try to force things and take sacks
Tjeck….there is no use trying to talk to a troll. Who hates Wilson. Wilson stats last year were good. Denver coach Sean Payton is just an overrated obnoxious jerk.
Wilson still has a lot left in the tank
So a 35 year old QB w/ ‘good’ stats is what you want as a starter? Is he going to have great stats this season, ha!
Wasn’t there talk of a Cortland Sutton trade, wouldn’t that kinda make sense with Wilson? Fields can only use 1 WR so Pickens and the crew is perfect for him, but Sutton can’t be so costly that it wouldn’t be worth it with Wilson starting
Denver recently said they wanted Sutton to stick around as the #1 for their new QB
I once thought that a trade to finish the offensive rebuild was imminent. Now think that’s highly doubtful
Khan has done a great job rebuilding this team and I trust him to be patient and find the right deal or free agent by training camp. Somebody always asks for a trade or maybe there will be a budget victim who can come in for a season or more.
Yeah, I don’t really think that Pittsburgh has a burning need at WR. Would another receiver be helpful? Sure, the Steelers have a host of depth guys or tertiary options in the stable. Wilson has the build, however, to profile as a potential number two, and the Steelers figure to be a ground team anyway. They’ve seemed to have done a great job taking a step forward in their roster building, but they figure to have another year or so in seeing how these picks turn out and having the opportunity to add in other places. There’s no urgency in my mind to go all out this year, even though they look to have taken some good steps to being where they need to be.
At this point can’t really expect significant outside reinforcements but I’d love for Oman Khan to surprise me. So looking at the roster this is pretty much a make or break year for Calvin Austin and a good chance for Freiermuth to show up more in the passing game as he potentially heads to free agency. Best case scenario is for Roman Wilson to establish himself as a reliable option sooner than later though.
They will probably trade for an OK WR on a bad contract.
