Antonio Pierce has spoken openly about his interest in acquiring a long-term QB option this offseason. New GM Tom Telesco had franchise QBs at the helm in each of his 11 years running the Chargers. This would point the Raiders to doing what they need to in order to acquire one of this draft’s starter-caliber arms.
But the team holds the No. 13 overall pick. With the Vikings acquiring another first-rounder from the Texans, they hold Nos. 11 and 23. The Broncos lack a second-round pick, but they do possess No. 12 overall, their first Round 1 draft slot in three years. It could be difficult for the Raiders to climb high enough to outflank the Vikings, as the Bears, Commanders and Patriots more likely than not to select a passer in the top three.
It also may not be a given all the key parties in the Las Vegas building want to put together a big trade package to draft a QB. Pierce is on board with doing so, per Sportskeeda.com’s Tony Pauline, but Telesco is “leaning heavily” toward sticking with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell. Controlling the Raiders’ roster, Telesco has the final call. Though Pierce should be expected to wield notable power ahead of his first draft as HC, Telesco has obviously run 11 drafts to his zero.
The Raiders have been closely tied to Jayden Daniels, who arrived at Arizona State when Pierce was on the Sun Devils’ staff. Daniels has remained close with Pierce, going so far as to be in the Raiders’ locker room after their Week 18 win over the Broncos. While a recent report indicated Las Vegas wants to trade up for Daniels — a player they mentioned during their OC search — the Commanders and Patriots stand as clear obstacles in that path. The Raiders believed to have been making an effort to move up, and a report coming out of the Combine confirmed Vegas had made inquiries about climbing from 13. Understandably, a Daniels visit is on the Raiders’ docket.
Mark Davis has OK’d a move up the board, though it could cost two future first-rounders to make that jump. The Commanders choosing Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy at 2 could make matters quite interesting in Nevada, given the stream of connections to Daniels. That would put the Patriots to a decision, should the Raiders make a monster offer to vault to No. 3. The Pats are likely open to moving down, but the buzz as of now points to New England drafting a QB at 3. Moving back to 13 would effectively lock the Pats out of the Daniels-Maye-McCarthy tier.
The Raiders could stick at 13 and have a chance at Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr., though Broncos-Nix connections have come out during the draft run-up. If the Raiders pivot to a non-quarterback call at 13, ESPN.com’s Jordan Reid indicates a cornerback-or-tackle decision may be on tap. While cornerback remains a need, especially after Amik Robertson‘s defection to Detroit, a Las Vegas tackle move should be considered on the radar, Reid writes.
The Raiders have Kolton Miller entrenched on the left side, but two-year RT starter Jermaine Eluemunor left for the Giants. Daniel Jeremiah’s latest NFL.com mock draft sends Penix to Vegas, while Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest ESPN.com offering gives them Oregon State tackle Taliese Fuaga.
Of course, a tackle-or-CB move would only raise the stakes for the Raiders in 2025, as a Minshew-centered roster would not present a high ceiling for the 2024 team. In a division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, that would not qualify as an exciting plan. But Minshew signed a two-year, $25MM deal. He does give the Raiders a fallback option if they opt against leaving Round 1 with a passer. Of course, if Pierce wants a QB and Telesco does not view it as realistic, this draft would not exactly start this partnership off on the right foot.
So here is the hype of all hype articles. There will be 6 QB’s drafted in the first 13 picks? The Raiders have earned the 13th overall pick, and that pick deserves better than the 6th QB selected.
I bet there will be a game changing corner, or a stonewall O-Lineman, or maybe a D-line stud that can impede an AFC West QB or three. No need to mortgage the future on a reach for a QB.
as a Raiders fan, I 100% agree, but then I also wonder with a team that will win 7 to 10 games a year, how do they get their franchise QB?
Ozzie Newsome was the official GM of the Ravens from 1996-2018. He would not overpay anyone. Instead, they would make an offer and let the player explore the market. He also never spent too much on a QB, and would spend a mid-late round pick almost every year on one.
As a Raider fan, 11 post season appearances and 2 Super Bowls later… Sounds like a game plan to me….
Ozzie Newsom drafted three first round QBs. The Raiders haven’t drafted a first round QB since Russell, and he was the first one since Marc Wilson 25 years before that. They need a QB. Every new coach gets their guy either coming in the door, or they think the guy there already is that guy. Sorry, but the guys currently on their roster are not that guy.
Ozzie did draft three in the first round, Lamar Jackson (2018); Joe Flacco (2008); Kyle Boller (2003)… He drafted a QB until he got it right, then a back up.
That guy might not be on the Raiders roster right now, but that doesn’t mean you sell off the future or waist a high pick reaching for a QB you think will be it. The Raiders are not one piece away and are clearly not a QB away from long term success.
You can’t win in the league without a QB. That’s just the facts. If you don’t get one, you’re basically saying you’re going to be out of work in a couple of years because either they’re not going to win enough to get one, or they’re going to lose due to not having one. Like what are we talking about?
I agree. I’d rather trade back than to trade up, but if we stand still, I’d be all-in for a CB or a RT.
who ends up the best QB from this draft class? any franchise altering guys? Penix?
No need to reach for a QB that isn’t likely going to ever become an NFL starter. Go ahead and take a chance if they happen to fall to you, but don’t waste other valuable picks.
As a Charger fan I was impressed with Miller after the 6 sack game against LA. He finished the season fairly well and I think the season ending experience helped. Minshew has grown his skills since his Washington State days and can win games.
That stated I would not be surprised to see Tom stand pat at QB and see if those two can help each other succeed in 24.
Then again Tom made a couple draft trades that didn’t fall flat.
Sorry Boys. OJ Simpson article…….. COMMENTS CLOSED!!!!
Not only closed but they waited until late at night to post it. I guess none of the staff had a TV on, or a radio, or the internet
We have a terrific forum community here and the regulars rarely cause a problem but I understand why the staff closed comments. There is always one clown who wants to be disrespectful and stir the pot in a situation like this. We don’t need that.
No problem with closed comments..I just can’t help but feel they dumped the story late at night just so they wouldn’t have to deal with any flack. I could be wrong but I also remember them not even posting an article when Kevin Greene passed..or if they did was days later. Seems they concentrate on the bigger cash cow ( MLB ). Lack of breaking news on this side of things
Telesco shouldn’t be in charge of anything. I still don’t understand how he got that job.
If you look at Tom Telesco history in the NFL, he might be the right guy needed to groom the guy’s in place. As the pro scout, personnel director, and President of Operations in Indy he had a hand in Manning and Luck. As the GM with the Chargers he had first input with Rivers and Herbert.
If your organization needs a QB, Tom Telesco might bring some knowledge to the discussion.
He was a bad GM though. I mean a guy like John Dorsey who is currently helping Detroit stack their roster and stacked Cleveland’s in a short amount of time before the terrible Kitchens hire or John Robinson from the Titans deserved second chances over him. Just seems like the latest line of Mark Davis hiring bad people because the old guys in his ear told him to. The Telesco hire made no sense on any level. Didn’t he get fired after the Raiders themselves dropped 60 on them? It seems like Josh McDaniels the GM addition, especially if he’s already butting heads with Pierce on what direction to go. He clearly has no clue what direction to go judging by that Charger team’s underachievement.
Pierce isn’t an NFL Head Coach, Barely even a decent High School Coach. No need for team to trade away assets this year, because they’ll get a top 5 pick next year with Pierce in charge.
Though Pierce should be expected to wield notable power ahead of his first draft
======================
Why would a coach with about a half-season of games under his belt wield notable power?
The alternative is the GM who was with the Chargers for ten years and who underachieved with two upper end QBs, one on his rookie deal, doing most of it. That doesn’t sound like a plan. At least Pierce is an unknown commodity. Telesco is simply going to fail again if given the chance.
Pierce is a known commodity. He failed as a High School coach, he destroyed an ASU program, that led to the firing of the entire coaching staff and numerous recruiting violations. We also know that good young coaches want no part of coaching on his staff, and that unless massively overpaid Free Agents won’t sign with the team either.
If Telesco is smart he should just wait until 2025. With Pierce as Head Coach the Raiders are pretty much guaranteed a top 5 pick in next years draft, so no need to panic and trade multiple picks this year. Draft an OT. Draft the QB next year, and build the team for when we hire a real head coach in two seasons.
