APRIL 6: Wentz’s one-year deal has a base value of $3.325MM, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The deal includes $2.2MM in guaranteed money, and Wentz can earn another $1.1MM via per-game active roster bonuses.
This is a solid improvement on the one-year, $1.3MM deal that Wentz signed with the Rams in November. Of course, it’s also a massive drop from the four-year, $128MM deal he signed with the Eagles in 2019.
APRIL 1: Patrick Mahomes has a new backup. The Chiefs have signed veteran Carson Wentz, according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz. The veteran QB got a one-year deal from Kansas City.
The former second-overall pick spent the 2023 campaign as Matthew Stafford‘s backup on the Rams. Wentz ended up getting into two games, including a start against the 49ers in the regular season finale. The 31-year-old completed 17 of his 24 pass attempts in that game, throwing for 163 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in an eventual Rams victory. Wentz was also active on the ground in that game, compiling 56 yards and a touchdown on 17 rushes.
The Rams ended up pivoting in a different direction at QB2 this offseason, signing Jimmy Garoppolo despite the veteran’s impending suspension. That move all but ended Wentz’s chances of re-signing in Los Angeles, but he’s apparently landed on his feet with the defending Super Bowl champs.
Chad Henne served as Mahomes’ backup for a few years before Blaine Gabbert took on the QB2 role in 2023. Gabbert ended up getting into a pair of games for Kansas City (including one start), tossing three interceptions. The former first-round pick hit free agency after the season, leaving the Chiefs with only Chris Oladokun and Ian Book as the backup quarterbacks.
Wentz will surely slide into that primary backup role, with the veteran bringing 93 games of starting experience to Kansas City. He got his last extended look as a starter with Washington in 2022. In seven starts (eight appearances) that season, Wentz completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Wentz was briefly demoted to QB2 after returning from a fractured finger, but he regained the starting gig down the stretch of that season.
Of course, the Chiefs are hoping Wentz will barely see the field in 2024. Mahomes has been incredibly healthy in his six years as a full-time starter, only missing four regular season games.
Wentz was really good for awhile…what happened?
Was it the injuries or did teams figure him out?
Head case, Andy must think he can straighten him out.
Wentz thrived when the Eagles OL dominated the league in time of possession. When that OL started to show it’s age and regress his play suffered as you would expect.
It wasn’t the O-line which continued to be dominant. He just declined.
His get up and go got up and Wentz.
That’s applicable to any QB.
Uh, no. It’s because that knee injury against the rams was career threatening, and to make matters worse foles beat Brady. That hill is too high to climb mentally and physically.
Interesting. He could have backed up Minshew
You can only join a team that makes you an offer. I think he’ll do okay if he can borrow Joe Flacco’s playbook for a year.
True
I saw this on FB and thought it was an April Fools’s joke.is this his 5th or 6th team in the last 4 years ?
Pretty good move for both the Chiefs and Wentz. Chiefs get an experienced former starter and Wentz gets to learn from Reid. I’m sure it’s probably a one year contract and if Wentz plays and plays well in backup or in case of I jury he might find a higher salary and opportunity with a team looking for a starting QB.
Wentz will never be a team’s plan at QB ever again. Holding a clipboard for a few million isn’t a bad gig, though!
Predictable signing for KC…..
Andy wants a veteran to be back up. I am neither positive or negative on this signing. Just fits the mold.
Not the worst backup in the league. Happy to have him as the QB2.
Terrible move for Wentz, you don’t even have a 0.1% chance at starting a game. Unless it’s garbage time or Mahomes gets injured you’re not touching a ball.
Why wouldn’t you sign with say the Denver Broncos. In competition with Stidham and even if he beats you out good chance he goes on a 5 game losing streak and you have a chance mid season. All time great head coach to learn off and capable receivers to throw at.
Payton probably showed zero interest in Wentz.
Did Denver make him an offer??? How would he sign with a team if they don’t offer a contract? It’s easy to say why didn’t he sign with so and so. As you can say why didn’t this company offer me a job if you don’t put an application in.
Sometimes these posts are ridiculous. Any how it’s a good signing. Even if he doesn’t play, he’s still a valuable insurance policy
Even if we assume Denver showed interest in Wentz, you’re talking about a chance for Wentz to “maybe” start on a bad football team. At 31, how much does that help you beyond it potentially being a better opportunity to pad your bank account? For a guy that has already made a lot of money, I think you take the better situation; and Kansas City is the better situation. As a quality backup QB, he could comfortably play for a number of more years there.
I’m also not convinced we aren’t beginning to see some of the same flaws in Payton that sunk Belichick- an inability to adapt.
He realized Ben Dinucci was in the Broncos QB room and knew he couldn’t beat him out 😉
Great move for Wentz. He won’t get another starting QB opportunity and he’s getting paid over $3M per to carry a clipboard.
Wonder if there will be a QB competition lol
Looks like mahomes will be holding a clip board this year
People bag on Wentz but the guy is better than most backups in football right now due to previous experience as a starter. The guy took a ton of nasty hits that just broke him.
True, the knock on him is he’s injury prone but he shredded his knee and broke his back and tried to play through both injuries. Add in a cheap shot by Clowney as well. He was made to be the villain on his way out of Philly, but what QB1 wouldn’t get upset the team uses a high draft pick to grab your replacement when you have a ton of needs that need to be filled? That pick to get QB2 could’ve been used to give him an actual weapon to improve the offense.
I think this is team #5: Eagles, Colts, Commanders, Rams, & Chiefs, do I have them in the right order?
Correct, 5 more than his critics have ever played for… :/
If you click on his highlighted name it will take you to career info. Any name will. Nice feature on here.
Get some of that good QB2 loot. Could do alot worse than Wentz as backup.
Overinflated ego is reason Wentz is always on move. Kansas city knows If he plays means mahomes is hurt , They are done.
