10 picks and no defense…the media and league must be loving this.
Missing Seattle’s first round pick Murphy from Texas
Pats need to trade back a few picks to get a extra 4th or 5th in the the second round then take that 2nd and a pick next yr and get a WR from the 49ers
Or just trade back it get a few extra picks they have way to many holes on offense to not keep adding extra picks imo they need to walk away with at least 2 wr and 2 o-line guys they need to realize good undrafted free agents may not want to come here anymore without the master of UDFA building this team nobody has ever been as good as BB at that
When the Saints announced their second round draft pick, I assumed something would come crashing through the wall.
I’m beginning to think it wasn’t Bill who was the problem in NE. smh at what they’re doing.
I thought the talent overall in this draft was lacking compared to prior years. Other than the overall #1, who really lucked out with starting top-teir talent as opposed to prospects?
Eisen sucking off Rams for the Corum pick haha
Better than the Falcons sucking off Penix as #1.
Im not really a football guy so i have question. In football unlike the other big 4 sports you can really give you team a massive boost thru the draft right? Theres no minor league just practice squad so in the draft you are drafting for what your team needs immediately correct? Aside from a QB like in ATL or picking a guy recovering from a surgery these guys are jumping in right away right?
All the major sports are the same in that teams are constantly looking to upgrade their overall talent level. Young prospects are viewed as a way to do that and they generally are the least expensive way. You might be seen as the best prospect available in your sport but everyone is expected to show up for training camp, compete with others and prove their worth. Injuries are the fickle wild card of sports. Usually they are seen as bad but sometimes they give a guy like Joe Flacco a chance to rise from the ashes and really help a team.
Sometimes die to the salary Cao, a team will draft for a position they might need a year from now. That’s especially if that’s the best player available when they pick.
This way you kind of meet your needs before you have to fill them. This practice also allows teams to get players in the building, learn their scheme, get up to speed to the game, get practice reps, and then when their number needs to get called upon in case of an injury or to start the following year if they can’t afford to resign a guy, they already have a young and cheap, ready-made replacement in house.
I think that’s typically what the best teams tend to do. Usually if you’re forced to draft for an immediate need, instead of taking one of the best available players, that is where teams typically make mistakes.
You get the best players in the building you possibly can. You’re going to have multiple picks throughout the draft, so if you force a pick due to need, you’re likely going to miss out on a player that can and will help your team right away and in the future.
It’s all about finding the balance between filling needs, following your draft board of best players available, and then filling future needs. When either the first or the third matches up with the best player on your board, then you definitely jump at that chance.
I am not sure if this helped or not, but I hope maybe it helped give a little insight.
Beat Wishes, and appreciate a mind thats not afraid to ask question to learn. Smart man.
There is no right or wrong approach but I’ve always viewed the “best player available” strategy as a defensive one where a GM is thinking “we have no need for this player but we certainly don’t want a division rival to have him”. Of course injuries can create needs where there didn’t seem to be any so a GM is always in a position where he has to juggle a few balls in the air at the same time.
Google CJ Stroud, Will Andersen, and Tank Dell for a classic example of guys who were playing college ball in December and jumping right in to NFL starters the following September.
They have to make the draft faster. rd 4-7 should not be 7hrs, we don’t need to see the randoms get their shoutout screen time. It is not about these rando fans, it is about the players that worked years to get their name called. Get to the picks faster.
If the NFL expands to an 18 game schedule and goes international you can probably expect a return to the 32 round draft format that existed in 1944. Forgot 7 hours…the event will run at least 7 days!
The NFL Players union should lobby to put free agency AFTER the draft, as it will drive up salaries for veteran players who can fill the roster holes teams have when the draft ends and they didn’t get what they needed.
it would actually have the opposite affect
1. Salaries would go down
2. Teams would be drafting for need instead of drafting best player available and really messing up their drafts.
The reason free agency is before the draft is so teams are forced to spend cause they don’t know who theyll get come draft time, drafts serve as much riskier gambles.
If the draft was held first teams would fill positions that way and spend less to fill it via free agency cause they don’t necessary need 8 figure players when they just drafted cheap guys.
Unless I’m very confused, nothing prevents a team from adding free agents after the draft. Didn’t the Browns sign Joe Flacco to their practice squad in November last year?
Drafts, In any sport, Are all about potential rather than need so much. All the scouts get together and project who someone will BECOME, More than what they are right now. This is even truer in football because of the 5 year rule. The 5th year even in a 4th round draft pick becomes way above average for his draft slot so you have to develop them fast. In baseball you have 4 levels of Minor League levels and hold a player until he’s 30 or so, In football you draft a 20 year old you have to figure out what he’s going to be by 24 and you hope you’re right.
The Lions are missing Sione Vaki, RB/S, Utah from their list. He was taken in the 4th round, 132nd pick.
