With the Falcons acquiring Kirk Cousins, Justin Fields does not have a clear option to continue his starter career. Though, a team thought to be out may be considering an addition.
The Raiders were believed to be kicking the tires on a Fields-Luke Getsy reunion, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur notes. With the Falcons out of the mix, the Bears may need to bring down their asking price. Although Chicago wanted to deal Fields before free agency, his market has hit a snag.
An example of how fast free agency moves, the Raiders have now agreed to a deal with Gardner Minshew. The Silver and Black are signing Minshew to a two-year agreement. This stands to keep the Fields trail cold. With the Falcons and now likely the Raiders out of the mix, it is worth wondering how the Bears will proceed here.
The Bears did not find the kind of Fields market they hoped for. With the team zeroing in on Caleb Williams, Fields may soon see his 2023 development lead to a demotion. The Raiders, Falcons and Steelers have gone with other options, and the QB-needy Broncos are not expected to be interested in a player who would certainly be an upgrade on Jarrett Stidham. Considering Sean Payton‘s actions with Russell Wilson, it would be unlikely he signs off on Fields running his offense.
Fields also would not seem a fit for Kevin O’Connell‘s offense, and a Bears-Vikings trade would be unlikely. Though, the Drew Bledsoe and Donovan McNabb trades show intra-divisional QB swaps are not out of the question. It will be interesting to see where the Bears go from here, as it does not sound like they are in line to obtain much for their three-year starter at this point.
But they just signed Gardner Minshew???
This is the media collectively shrugging when asked who trades for Fields now.
Keep JF1 in Chicago and build a Superteam.
I totally agree with your sentiment. Bears absolutely should keep Fields, even if drafting Caleb. Build a super team that utilizes Fields at halfback and split outside like the Steelers did with their ultra-backer way back when. Fields is basically the best open field runner with size in the NFL, make that an undefensable weapon.
Think big, revolutionize the game.
“Thinking big” would be letting Fields, who led all QBs in 4th qtr ints since 2021, go, and drafting Williams. No guarantees he’ll be great, but maintaining the status quo after 3 mediocre seasons is just foolish.
I agree now with drafting Caleb #1 unless there was an overwhelming offer from WAS or NE. However, Fields is a superior athlete to Antwaan Randle El, who the Steelers turned into a very valuable weapon as a WR, despite his prowess as QB. Fields could be a stud receiver/specialty back and backup QB, worth a ton more than late round picks. He and Caleb together could be dangerous with a creative play caller.
MF SAID SUPER TEAM WITH BUSTIN FOLDS
Bears need to keep fields and draft Harrison Jr, him and Moore will make fields better…then also sign chase Young to go with sweat…they will be a playoff contender.
While no one knows how its all going to turn out with either keeping Fields or drafting Williams, I would say with all of the red flags on Williams – apparently a huge ego (I mean calls himself superman), too emotional, disappears against good defenses, fumbles, tries to do too much with the ball, etc. The last two being what people say about Fields but at least Fields checks his emotions where opposing NFL d’s will try to goad Williams into mistakes (and likely succeed). Never mind the latest news of postponing the planned trip to the Bears and rumors about how Williams camp are trying to work in the background to get Washington to get him somehow.
I would say it would be far more productive for the Bears to move the #1 overall to another team for a huge haul in return and get some more picks this year and another potential high 1st round pick for next. Then fix the many holes the Bears still have (One could argue LT, Center, WR and TE are all needed, maybe even Guard since Davis looks like a turnstile out there at times, and that’s just the offense). Whatever the Bears do it could work out and I hope it does, but A LOT more questions to me that are unanswered than the fawning media want to cover with Williams.
The lack of interest in Fields shows that Caleb Williams is a slam dunk choice for the Bears. Fields is not good.
Yes, the guys who drafted Zach Wilson 2nd overall and gave up three 1R picks to trade up to draft Trey Lance don’t think Fields is good. Case closed.
Or consider the Falcons, who refused to spend $200M on Lamar Jackson last offseason (for similar reasons) and instead decided to spend the same amount on Kirk Cousins + Desmond Ridder. Case closed x2, these guys are obviously really smart.
FOH.
You seem upset
What a ridiculous steak a bunch of GM’s passed on Tom Brady. A bunch of GM just spent a bunch of money on running backs in free agency. I know this is a surprising concept but GM’s aren’t actually these brilliant dudes that you think they are. Just because a bunch of GM’s don’t like somebody doesn’t mean that they’re not good. The NFL is mostly full of bad GMs. And just be clear because I know people are going to miss an interpret what I’m saying I’m certainly not saying Justin Fields is Tom Brady. I’m just saying who cares what GMs think.
At this point the Bears aren’t even going to get a third round pick for Fields. Realistic return is now a fifth rounder.
Patriots for a 5th round pick.
Bears have the money draft CW and keep fields pick up 5th year and have open competition or let CW back up fields , With the way fields plays CW more then likely will get a chance to play with a JF injury at some point in 2024
People were deluding themselves to think they’d get anything of value for fields. I remember that goody report that had the patriots trading their first and a future pick for fields and the bears 2024 pick.
He likely nets a 4th rounder
I remember one particularly bad mock that had Fields being traded to the Raiders for a #2, that became a #1 if the Raiders made the playoffs.
I think the Raiders are a borderline playoff team now, so why would they give up a #1 just to have Fields ‘maybe’ win two more games?
I think there was a window of time they could’ve got more. Management was greedy and the market passed them by. Better to get a 2nd or 3rd than swing and miss on first and end up with a 4th.
I like the ideas of Bears drafting CW that said if the Bears can Trade down with Washington then again with NE and then draft MH-Jr or Trade back again with another needy QB team and still stay in top 6-8 while grabbing 2-3 1st rounders in the future 2nd this and a few in the future then I believe it’s a no brainer .. As long as the Bears can hold 2 or more 1sts in 25 /26 then they allow themselves an out at qb while building up a top tier team .
I mean things aren’t looking good. Bears waited way too damn long and abused the leverage they initially had. I’m not an analyst but what’s POSSIBLY remaining is cutting your losses for a 4th to 6th rounder. A couple teams I could maybe see making a low cost move for fields? I can only think of Raiders(even with Minshew) or the Giants(super slim chance)
A 4th and a 6th aren’t worth a top QB backup, let alone starter, especially in this thin draft. Keep Fields, his trade value mid season would surely be higher. He is a high character guy who just might be able to co-exist with Caleb, maybe even thrive.
I can’t see them doing. It would be a distraction amongst other things lmao
If anybody thought Justin Fields was worth more than a Wendys $5 biggy bag you’re sadly delusional
keep Fields, trade down – hauls in picks shore other areas , more so OL & DL , build the team , the core team is built & is Field’s has not found his act then trade him & draft your next QB . Plain & simple Fields has not really had a team to play behind or in front of with the Bears , he has scrambling ability because he has been running for his life as he has no OL , I think he was sacked the most last year. He has all the talent just no help.
This coming from a Lions fan seen the same with Goff , they spoke of him being washed or a bum , he was running for his life when he came to the Lions he had no help until they shored up the OL & got him some help . It may happen to Fields as well – may be????
I hope to god they trade Fields. I don’t want to see a repeat of every Bears QB since Rex Grossman blowing every opportunity the Bears got in the playoffs. Fields is not quick enough with his decisions, has a very slow release and throwing motion, and is not consistently accurate making some his throws, especially over the middle in traffic.
