A Josh Jacobs-Raiders reunion will not take place. The former rushing champion is expected to join the Packers, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The four-year deal is worth $48MM, the pair report in a follow-up.
Vegas had an offer on the table as of earlier today, proving the team’s intention of working out a multi-year deal. The threat of free agent departure has existed since last offseason, of course, when Jacobs received the franchise tag and talks on a new deal did not produce an agreement.
Vegas ultimately ended Jacobs’ training camp holdout by agreeing to a revised one-year deal which upped the value of the tag slightly. Coming off his best season, expectations were high in 2023 for the former first-rounder. However, he produced a career low in rushing yards (805) and yards per carry (3.5).
In spite of that, Jacobs represented one of the top backs on the market. The 26-year-old sat in the middle of the pack in terms of age amongst high-profile options who were available, many have whom have quickly landed deals. Terms of the Jacobs deal are roughly in line with many other notable RB deals given out today given the nature of the 2024 market, but to little surprise he has topped the list in terms of length and total value. The Alabama product will immediately take on an every-down role in Green Bay.
For a brief period on Monday, it appeared the Packers would have both Jacobs and incumbent starter Aaron Jones in the fold. However, the latter has been released after attempts to work out a pay cut fell through. With AJ Dillon set to depart in free agency, plenty of backfield carries and targets will be heading Jacobs’ way in 2024. Green Bay enjoyed success on the ground late in the season and into the playoffs, and continuing that production will be a key priority.
Doing so will take on a different dynamic with Jacobs (and not Jones) leading the way, not to mention the O-line departures which the Packers have seen. In any case, Green Bay’s offense will be built in large part on the ground game during Jordan Love‘s second year as a starter.
Hot damn a lot of moving parts going on.
Wow didn’t expect that
Neither did I lmao I was thinking Texans Vikings or cowboys
This looks like a good move by the Packers to take some of the heat off Love.
Josh Jacobs might not have ever been happy as a Raider
I am just surprised that he wants to go somewhere cold
Oh wow. I guess you can afford some luxury items when your top five receivers and top two tight ends have a cumulative 2024 cap hit of like $10 million.
This is not what I was expecting to see from the Packers. So glad Dillon is essentially gone then.
Does this mean Jones is going to be cut then or are they going to split?
Hope they split. I still think Jones has stuff left in the tank.
If the plan was to split I think Henry would have been the better option over Jacobs.
If the plan is to cut Jones (which I don’t necessarily agree with unless there are more shoes to drop) then I don’t mind this move.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade Jones after this
They are re-working Jones’ contract. Henry is 30 and Jacobs is 26 is the reason for this. This is was Gute envisioned when he drafted AJ Dillion. Except instead of hoping for the development of a complementary back, now you know what you are getting in Jacobs.
I am just glad this means the end of AJ Dillon likely. The guy was a complete zero technique BUM.
Keeps thinking he can run over guys like he did in college at a non-major football college.
He tries that every short to go scenario and he gets stomped by grown men every time.
Whether it’s Jacobs at the #2 or Jones at the #2 or some guy from the draft as the #2 it is a net positive because Dillon is out of the picture.
Did the Packers lose one of Jones or Dillon? If they didn’t that seems like an awful lot of RB talent
Dillon is gone.
Dillon is a free agent.
Dillon is a FA and its anyone’s guess (with this move) what happens with Jones. If they intend to keep him it’s almost guaranteed there’s an extension or restructure coming. And I hope he’s back, they’re just a different offense when he’s in there.
Only way he is back with the Packers is on a one-year veterans minimum deal. The third RB really doesn’t get that many carries, and I would think the Packers would rather develop a mid-round RB instead with that third spot. I can totally see the Vikings going after Dillon since they are required to sign an ex-Packer every year and need a RB.
The guy always runs hard. Surprised the Raiders didn’t make a strong push to re-sign or keep him. Great addition for the Pack
I think the Raiders are more interested in trying to turn a new leaf, get rid of everything with the old regimes and start over…probably why they lowballed him. Plus I’m sure no love lost over the franchise tag last year.
No need to overthink this. Jones and Jacobs will share time in what may now be the best backfield in football. AJ is a great guy and teammate – respect to him as he departs.
Just read the latest rumor-GB is releasing Jones. I don’t like that at all. I guess there’s a chance they work out a new deal, but I doubt it.
Calm yourself buddy. Jones just got released, not even traded… flat out released. So maybe pump the brakes on “the best backfield in football” lol
Why would we want this guy who can’t even stay on the field over one of the Best Packers of all time in Aaron Jones!! God I hate our Front Office idiots!!!!
Replying to myself but they need to sign Jones back ASAP and I still think this is a bad signing
You’re a fool if you prefer Jones to Jacobs. A homer who is blinded by reality that business decisions happen.
Not sure how replacing someone with years of experience in the system, who had 5 100+ rushing games down the stretch with a guy who had a down year, and giving him a rather large contract while simultaneously claiming the reason for dumping Jones is financially motivated is a sound business decision.
What exactly makes Jacobs the smart option?
Lol that sucks
