Following Jadeveon Clowney‘s visit with the Jets earlier this month, the team is focused on getting a deal finalized. According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Jets are “highly motivated” to sign the veteran edge rusher to a contract. Schultz notes that the two sides have been in “constant contact” since their in-person meeting.

Since losing Bryce Huff to the Eagles, the Jets have been hunting for some reinforcement on the edge. As Schultz notes, the Jets were in the running for Shaquil Barrett “until the very end,” but they lost out on that sweepstakes when the pass rusher signed with the Dolphins.
Now, they’re shifting their focus to Clowney, who is coming off one of the most productive seasons of his career. The former first-overall pick got into 17 games (15 starts) for the Ravens in 2023, finishing with 9.5 sacks, 19 QB hits, and a pair of forced fumbles. For his efforts, Pro Football Focus graded Clowney 18th among 112 qualifying edge defenders.
In New York, Clowney would slide right into the rotational pass-rush role previously held by Huff, who finished last season with 10 sacks. While Huff didn’t start a game last year, he still got close to 500 defensive snaps playing alongside Jermaine Johnson and John Franklin-Myers. For comparison’s sake, Clowney garnered 654 snaps with the Ravens in 2023.
We heard previously that the Ravens were looking to retain the veteran, and Clowney also met with the Panthers during his free agency tour. According to Schultz, both of those teams remain in the hunt for the free agent, but it sounds like the Jets have been especially active in finalizing a deal.
Love this! Get him Jets!
I guess where he ends up will be based on his reason for signing? Is it about money or about choosing the team he feels has a legit shot to reach and win SB?
Yeah all these 1 year merc deals worked out well for teams like Baltimore and Philly last year.
Maybe just getting better people in charge to draft and develop players?
Clowney did work out well for Baltimore last year. And those teams and the Jets *have* done a good job of drafting and developing defensive linemen. Having a big rotation means drafting, developing, *and* bringing in outside help.
Depends on which Clowney they get- The one who played well for the Ravens or the one who stunk with the Titans?
The Jets just had their UDFA get the largest contract out of any UDFA ever and youre saying they dont develop them? Huh?
Not sure why anyone would be highly motivated to get an overhyped player like Clowney …
He ranked 18th overall and it’s not like he’s getting a multi-year deal, either. A 1 year deal for 9.5 sacks and that kind of production would motivate a team that just lost someone in that area.
Nothing over hyped about Clowney when in Baltimore. Played well. His stats show it but, more importantly, he and Van Noy were that disruptive force that freed up Madabuke to go off with all those QB sacks.
Why does it matter if he is overhyped?
As long as he produces.
Last year, the Jets went crazy in FA only to be sub .500. So why not try it again? Miserable franchise.
One year deals for good players at positions of need are different than giving a bunch of years and money to Lazard.
Sure. But they are short on picks this year, only dealt with used up OT’s for Rodgers and still haven’t upgraded QB2. Have you seen anything they’ve done this offseason to impress you?
I think they’ve done a good job of addressing WR2 and their five OL lineup before the draft considering their cap limitations without hamstringing themselves for the future. All come with risk and no superstars or anything, but the cost was nothing on Moses and reasonable on Simpson, Smith, and Williams, and now there’s no huge immediate home they *need* to fill with pick ten. It’s not like I think they’re going to win the Super Bowl, but I think the real mistakes were last offseason. I think all of this offseason’s moves have been very reasonable.
The new OT’s are well pass their primes in my opinion. And from what I’ve read, many players were mad that the coaching staff didn’t make any adjustments after Aaron was hurt last year, yet it’s still the same staff? Add in rumor Arron may run for VP & will be 40… No doubt in my mind, they’ll be around .500 again. Nothing they’ve done says ‘big improvement’.
The wingnut has already chosen a running mate. And yeah, the tackles are both past their primes, but they’re also both solid options at low prices and improvements over last year, which is a lot better than they could have done given their situation. I kinda hope they take a LT succession plan in the first round. Meanwhile there has been some front office change, and the biggest problem with their staff is Hackett, but he’s Rodgers’ guy. I don’t like how much is riding on Rodgers, but again, that’s a last offseason decision.
Which wingnut?? Rodgers!! I heard his helmet comes pre-lined with foil.
Oh Rodgers is most definitely a wingnut, but the other wingnut has chosen another running mate.
I can’t believe that Rodgers lost a crazy off!!
Rodgers is 100% about himself only & that’s fine. But you can’t win like that. I believe that sincerely contributed to GB moving on from him. They had enough of his ego. Hackett staying sums that up. Plenty of people said they were more like frat bothers than coach/QB relationship. That’s not how you build a winning offense.
And since the GM is not in charge, rather they have to obey Rodgers demands, they’ll not trade back from 10, followed by a 3rd round pick, and then 3 at well after the 1st 100. 5 picks and 3 are low rounders(?) that’s not a winning formula.
$1 says it’ll be a massive overhaul next offseason for them. New HC, GM & QB.
I’m guessing Douglas sticks around regardless.
I don’t know. It’s not that he’s done anything bad or wrong, but crossing his fingers with Zach as the backup hurt. He put too many eggs in that one basket, the most critical basket of them all.
Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh do not take orders from Aaron Rodgers or any player. As proof, Allen Lazard was a healthy scratch for the first Miami game last fall cos he went diva.
That proves nothing at all. Rodgers wasn’t playing then and seemed checked out by November. They got Lazard, Cobb and others. Why? Because Rodgers ordered them to.
Tyrod Taylor is a fine QB2
Totallyyyyy. Aaron Rodgers tore his achilles LAST year so why even try THIS year? Calling a team miserable because theyre trying to succeed is a wild take
“Shaq Barrett sweepstakes”
lmao!
Every circus needs a clown
but will clowney be motivated to do anything after they sign him?
Odd to be “highly motivated” to sign a player that is rarely motivated. Should’ve been a generational talent and instead just leaves people wondering how productive he could’ve been if only he gave a sh!t.
