Much of Monday’s action has related to the opening of free agency, which will officially take place later this week. Trades – in certain cases – are still very much on the table as a roster-building strategy this time of year.
Should the Panthers elect to trade franchise-tagged edge rusher Brian Burns, the Giants could be a landing spot. SNY’s Connor Hughes reports a mutual interest exists between Burns and New York on a trade which would be accompanied by a lucrative new deal. The sides have been discussing Burns for a while, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports. No deal is final, but it appears this process has legs that could produce finality to a long-running saga. As of Monday afternoon, this process is trending toward a deal, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones tweets. Nothing is final just yet, however.
A recent development pointed to a trade being in play. Carolina paused Burns extension talks — once again, as the sides have been at it for a while off and on — just before franchise-tagging him. A tag had long been in play for the 2019 first-round pick, but trade offers have come in as well.
Teams pursued Burns at each of the past two trade deadlines, but Carolina stood pat. One of the bigger “what if?” trades in recent NFL history transpired in 2022, when the Rams offered two-first-rounders and a third for the talented edge rusher. The Panthers declined the offer, and they did not receive any proposals in that ballpark in 2023. Burns playing out his rookie contract will make matters more difficult for the Panthers to obtain comparable value to that Rams blockbuster offer in a trade.
Burns, 25, would obviously bring a major upgrade to the Giants. Big Blue has sought an edge rusher to pair with Kayvon Thibodeaux, and the first two years of a Burns contract would align with Thibodeaux’s rookie deal. The Giants can keep the 2022 first-rounder on his rookie pact through 2025, with a fifth-year option decision for ’26. Burns has sought a $30MM-per-year deal, however, and the Panthers have been reluctant to authorize it. As Carolina shifts to a new GM and coaching staff, it does seem like a trade is in play now.
While edge rushers are obviously valuable, Burns needing a top-market contract will cut into his trade value. He has not brought the kind of production Khalil Mack did when the Raiders received two first-rounders for the former Defensive Player of the Year. CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson offers that teams are hesitant to part with a first-rounder and change for Burns, who has one double-digit sack season on his resume. That said, Burns has 46 career sacks and has never totaled fewer than 7.5 in a season.
Idk panthers some deal involving the #6 pick could go a long way to helping Bryce Young.
The Giants are not including the number six pick in the draft in the deal. They’re not giving up that high of a pick and then paying a guy the amount of money is going to take to sign Burns. It’s not going to happen.
“Trade us your best player for nothing of value and our scraps”
Works out pretty well usually.
Nobody said that. But the Giants are not giving up the sixth pick in the draft for a guy they’re going to have to give $30 million a year to. That’s just not going to happen.
Nobody said trade the #6 pick straight up for Burns and pay him $$$$ in a 1 for 1 swap
Well, if I misunderstood your original post, I apologize but what was the implication then? You did mention the number six pick.
“ some deal involving the #6 pick could go a long way to helping Bryce Young.”
The implication was Panthers could trade Burns, #33 (1st pick in the 2nd) and other assets to move up to #6.
OK fair enough but again, I don’t think the number six pick is in play at all in this deal, even in an expanded deal.
The Giants just lost McKinney and Barkley, now they’re going to trade for a pass rush specialist who couldn’t stick with the league’s worst team.
Jets fans are grinning like the Cheshire cat at what’s going on in East Rutherford.
The Jets will end up 8-9 and the Giants will end up 6-11. Congratulations.
GM Rodgers won’t make the Jets 8-9. They’ll be drafting top 10 next year as well.
Why would the Jets be smiling about anything? They are garbage and they’ve done nothing yet while all these players are flying off the board.
Who signed today that the Jets should and realistically could have signed?
The Jets need offensive line help desperately, and several guards have already signed.
They need tackles, who have t signed today, much more urgently than they need guards and some of the guard contracts given out today are not only prohibitively expensive for the Jets’ cap situation, but silly amounts of money. It’s the first day of free agency. You’ll also notice some of the smartest teams in the league laying pretty low.
Perhaps so, but they also could be left out in the cold and they are in a situation where they need three starting offensive lineman. Can’t really be all that selective and wait all that long for the very best deal.
Ok I’ll ask again. Who signed today that they should and realistically could have signed?
How about any of the guards that sign today? The Jets don’t just need tackles. They do need a guard as well.
Zero chance they could or should have matched the Hunt or Jackson deals. Glasgow stayed put in Detroit. So that leaves, what, Runyan, who isn’t all that good and got overpaid? The only offensive lineman who changed teams today whose contract I would have actually wanted the Jets to match is Eluemunor.
OK, so there you named a guy
OK, a guy. Hardly “all these players flying off the board.”
Runyan is a very good past blocking guard and he played on the opposite side last year. He’s been better in previous seasons. The Jets could’ve used him.
I don’t think Runyan is the caliber of player you give big money at a position like guard, especially not when you have limited cap space and bigger fish to fry.
I don’t think the Runon contract is that huge. It’s not like the guys who got 16, 17 18, 20 million. I can see where youre coming from in those ranges.
Yeah, those are wild, but Hunt at least is a much better player. I don’t think Runyon is particularly good, and I certainly wouldn’t fret about not racing to sign him. There are still a couple of better guards on the market, and it’s fine if they find a guard in the draft to pair with a journeyman. Or it’s possible they sign a center and play Tippmann at guard for another year. And again, their cap situation is limited and they have more pressing needs than guard. They have to triage, and winning bidding wars on day one for guards ain’t a good way to do that.
This is what jet fans do. There is a severe case of little brother syndrome and anytime the Giants make a misstep, they point and holler like a politician, as if they haven’t been one of the worst franchises in nfl history.
You should have heard them during their dynastic run of back to back divisional round playoff wins in 09-10.
Unfortunately the Giants have sunk to jet level as of late. It’s been a tough watch.
You just have to laugh and feel bad for them. They just want attention and don’t know how to go about it.
“A pass rush specialist who couldn’t stick with the league’s worst team” is not a remotely reasonable description of Burns.
There’s a Giants-Jets rivalry only in your mind, Chuckster. The last Jets Super Bowl win is almost eligible for Medicare.
Also, I’m having trouble parsing what you mean by “couldn’t stick with the league’s worst team”. Are you suggesting Burns isn’t elite? Because that would be wrong.
To all the haters out there: The Giants act like they’re entitled — the Jets don’t.
Why else do the Giants have a clueless front office and a “Coach of the Year” who gets his ass kicked by Dallas every which way.
I don’t think the Giants act entitled. And why would the Jets ever act entitled? They don’t win anything ever.
The Giants do not act like they’re entitled. They’ve been one of the worst teams in the league over the last decade.
Entitled is acting like getting an aging diva QB from the Packers is the last piece of the puzzle. Then failing. Then doing it all over again 15 years later but having even more attitude about it. Then failing again.
So Carolina signed a $100 OG and want to trade, an in his prime, DE? Good luck Panthers fans.
Idk, trade the #6 in the 1st round and #47 in 2nd?
NYG really need an elite WR, hard to imagine they move that pick, but it is the Giants.
And why would the worse franchise the Panthers get over on them? The Giants are not including the sixth pick in the draft in a trade for Burns. They will give compensation for a player of his value who requires a contract extension of $30 million a year.
Yeah I know how it works, I didn’t say anything about getting one over on them, I am just commenting on the article. You already made the same statement in your response to Oh Boy Here We Go, are you going to repeat it to everyone who mentions the 6th pick?
If you read my original post I clearly am on your side about this, difference is I am not a Giants fan so I love watching them fumble lol.
Yes, and I might just repeat it again to someone else. I’m all sorts of crazy that way. The original article doesn’t say anything about the six pick so Im not sure what you are citing.
