During his first draft in charge of the Cardinals, general manager Monti Ossenfort was busy on the trade front. He swung a total of five deals which featured pick swaps, including a deal which saw Arizona move out of the third overall slot. A repeat in 2024 could be on the table.
During a Wednesday press conference, Ossenfort confirmed a recent report that he will be willing to entertain offers for the Cardinals’ top pick in 2024 (No. 4 overall). The top three picks belong to QB-needy teams (Bears, Commanders, Patriots) and as such it would come as a surprise if any of those selections were dealt. The Cardinals are a logical trade-down candidate given the market which could exist for teams looking to secure the next-best passer and the number of roster holes Ossenfort still needs to fill as part of Arizona’s ongoing rebuilding effort.
“There will be a big neon sign that says ‘open’ and I don’t like it blinking, it messes with my eyes, but we’re always going to be listening,” Ossenfort said (via NFL.com). “I think we’ll always have the conversation, we may not get to a point where a deal makes sense, whether it’s at [No.] 4 or anywhere we’re picking, but we’re always going to have the conversation and if it makes sense, if it’s attractive to building our team, then it’s something that we’ll certainly consider.”
The Vikings added an extra first-round pick last week, giving them the draft capital needed to pull off a move up the board. Minnesota has been connected to the No. 4 slot in the wake of that deal. The Broncos, currently set to pick 12th overall, are another candidate for an aggressive move aimed at landing a high-end passer. However, Jarrett Stidham appears to be on track to serve as Denver’s 2024 starter as things stand.
Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are slated to hear their names called before any other prospect on Day 1 of next month’s draft. A number of highly regarded receivers and tackles are among the other players on track to be selected in the top 10, and Arizona has frequently been tapped as a landing spot for Marvin Harrison Jr. Not all teams view the Ohio State star as the top wideout available, though, and the Cardinals could be among those which prefer LSU’s Malik Nabers. If Arizona is prepared to slide down the order, several suitors could increasingly show interest in pulling off a trade.
On that point, Ossenfort added, “I’d say those phone calls are starting to pick up a little bit, I would say they’ll probably continue into next week when we get down to Florida for the owner’s meetings… So I would imagine some of those conversations will continue to pick up, but honestly they probably will not get real serious until we get right up until the week of the draft, similar to last year. They have definitely picked up, but I expect that to continue here for the next month.”
In the wake of Ossenefort’s comments, Mike Jurecki of Arizona Football Daily views it as “highly likely” the Cardinals will trade down. If that turns out to be the case, the market which the Cardinals can generate for the selection will be a key storyline to follow.
Feels like Ossenfort wants to do exactly what he did last year and drop down then come back up to get his guy while banking an extra first round pick this year or next.
It’s smart to see what you can get for #4. Maybe he’s not sold on Harrison.
Nabers is the guy I like. Broke tackles like Houdini broke shackles. Lotta good WRs in this draft.
Houdini’s weakness was he couldn’t take punches to the gut.
It’s also possible Harrison isn’t on the board. I don’t know how likely that is but if Harrison is gone and the 3rd QB prospect is still on the board he could possibly get a couple future first depending on how far they drop.
If he’s not sold on Harrison, he probably shouldn’t be an NFL GM.
Maybe he’s not sold on Harrison.
=======================
That’s a perfect reason for trading back. If you aren’t 100% convinced that you are even getting the best WR, then trade back for value. I said the same thing last year when it looked like Carolina wasn’t sure who they wanted with the #1.
Well that deal blew up in his face a bit cause it was a late round pick.
I’d trade it to the bears let them grab Williams and choice of WR at 4.
Blew up in his face in what regard? Yeah the pick wasn’t as good as he wanted but it was reported that they were going to take Paris Johnson at 3 anyway if they couldn’t trade down. Getting an extra first round pick even if it’s late and drafting the guy you wanted anyway is hardly blowing up in your face.
Trading a 3rd overall pick for a #12 and #28 overall pick is such a waste of having a premium pick.
That is definitely blowing up in your face cause you could have gotten better value.
“They were gonna take Johnson anyways” cool still got significantly less value for the pick value
“Getting an extra 1st is a win!”
Again got significantly less value than pick was worth
It’s 11 and 23.
No it’s 12 and 27
The 23rd pick was Cleveland’s
Texans traded their pick which was 27
@oh boy think they were talking about the Vikings picks
Your argument is just flat out wrong and also lacks context.
First of all the trade was for more than 12 and a future first. The trade was for 12, 34, and this year’s 1st and 3rd. But essentially it was a 3 team deal with the lions. So essentially the trade was from 3 to 6 getting a future first and third.
Which despite your ignorance is actually above market value based on the CAVOA statistic the NFL GM’s use to evaluate pick value during trades.
Clearly the cardinals valued Paris Johnson at the 3rd pick but were able to get him at the 6th and add future assets at a team devoid of talent.
If you called every single GM in the entire league and said hey would you rather draft this guy you want at 3 or draft the very same guy at 6 and we’ll give you the 28th and 90th picks of next years draft. You would get a 100% yes rate from all of them.
Your analysis of get same guy at 6 ignores the fact the cardinals traded 12, 34, and 81 to move up to get him
Trading 3 to get 6 and 27!is actually a break even point possibly a loss since Arizona sent a 3rd and got back a 4th from Texans
Arizona got 12 and 27 a 2nd and 4th I believe
They dealt 12 a 2nd anr 3rd for Johnson
So they wind up with 6 and 27 which is about even in value.
Cardinals broke even at best.
But they definitely did not get the best value out of trading from #3.
Edit sorry Arizona got a 3rd sent a 5th or something
So they walk away with 6 27 and a 3rd and 4th idk where they fall but you’re talking 2200 Texans value something like 2450 Arizona value. It’s about equal.
They gave up 3 and 105 to receive 12, 33, 2024 1st and 3rd. Not just 12 and 28.
Thats fact. Indisputable fact.
No amount of if and or buts changes that fact.
I’d also love to know which example of a team trading that pick and getting better value you are referring to?
2013 Oakland traded 3rd overall to Miami for pick 12 and 42. That’s it. If you thought Cardinals got hosed I can only imagine how you feel about this deal
They broke even lmao.
Someone already broke it down for you.
You don’t break even trading a #3 overall pick in a draft.
And jets gave up a 1st and 2nds to trade up and grab Darnold couple years ago. Yes you can get a kings ransom for the picks cardinals did not and got hosed in draft value (broke even) and hosed in actual value so far. Anderson is defensive rookie of the year graded out as an 81 in PFF na Johnson graded out as a 60.
How can you say they got hosed and they broke even in the same sentence? Thats doesn’t make sense.
And as someone else mentioned, judging trade value is a separate argument from the player selection.
PFF is far from the gospel by the way.
Also for the record the jets gave up 3 2nds not any firsts.
Hopefully the Cardinals stay put and the Chargers can trade down for a haul
It just depends on what the Giants are doing. If NYG want a QB then MIN could jump up, but it also depends if MIN wants JJ or Nix. I think MIN could stay at #11 and take JJ if he is not taken by NYG or just select Nix if JJ isn’t there.
If any team is smart enough to really look at the current draft there isn’t a great reason to trade away 3 picks just to take a guy who is most likely going to be there when you were suppose to select initially.
NYG, MIN, DEN, LV
Giants take JJ
MIN take Nix
DEN could take Penix but if they do not want him in round 1 then LV can select him.
There are 7 teams in need of a QB, there are 6 quality QB prospects coming into the league. I do not think MIN should panic and trade up, but they probably will.
Just my opinion.
I want the Vikings to do whatever it takes to get the guy O’connell wants to develop. I hear ya on staying at 11 and taking whoever falls. But you don’t want O’Connell having to go to prom with his 3rd choice.
I can see the Raiders very interested in the pick if one of the three QB’s are available at #4. Doubtful, but you never know.
Then again, I’d bank on the Vikes trading up with that extra 1st rounder to add with their own first to nab that pick (given a top 3 QB is still there).
It would be hard to pass up on Harrison or all three of the top receivers, but they also badly need high end talent at all three levels of the defense, plus it’s hard to turn down a chance to churn more high round picks for next year.
Everyone is divided on K Murray. But he hasn’t had much to work with. They need to use their two 1st rounders on offense and get a true evaluation if he is their long term answer at QB. What’s it, year 5 for Kyler?
Kyler Murray?
He’s an about $50M cap hit until 2027
He’s had Nuke & Hollywood
He’s been overrated af since OU
He’s a product of the NCAA QB Whisperer Lincoln Riley like Baker Mayfield and, as I’ve been saying for awhile now, Caleb Williams.
With that cap hit, throw him some high end picks because they’re stuck with him. Just like Cleveland is stuck with Watson. What’s the point of an edge, LB, or DB? How does that help Kyler?
Patriots taking MHJ 3rd confirmed ☑️
@the magical scientist hope so, they can use a wr. Same with cardinals. Plus I’m biased because it would set up the chargers to trade the 5th for a haul. I’m sure someone will fall in the second like penix or nix.
I would def trade out of 4
IMHO the biggest surprise could be Marvin Harrison Jr sliding because of his refusal to work out for NFL Teams prior to the draft and questions about his separation to get open due his refusal to run the 40 yard dash.
It doesn’t take a genius to see that trading back is the right thing to do to imcrease the length of your own tenure as Arizona’s GM. It is clear that several teams are desperate enough to give you three or four good picks/players for the one you’d have to give up. It makes even more sense if Harrison isn’t a clear choice on your draft board over Nabors or Odunze – as at least one of them will likely still be there if you swap draft picks with the Giants, Vikings, Denver or Vegas.
Not to say Nabors or Odunze aren’t talented players, but I just don’t see how any NFL GM doesn’t see Harrison Jr. as a cut above them. To me, it should take an insane overpay -one I don’t know Arizona is likely to get- to trade down. I’m of the opinion that MHJ is the one player in this draft that could drastically change a franchise’s fortunes.
Near every team is ‘open’ to moving if the right offer is provided.
Chicago, St. Louis then Arizona. The Cardinals are running out of places to move to until Goodell’s plan to expand into foreign markets succeeds.
Tee Higgins and pick 18 for number 4
Ain’t sparking my interest if’n I was GM
