Mentioned as being interested in cornerback help, the Lions might not be the team that trades for L’Jarius Sneed. Detroit will, however, stay focused on the trade market to help out here.
The Lions are set to acquire Carlton Davis from the Buccaneers, NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets. The Buccaneers will receive a 2024 third-round pick. In addition to Davis, they’ll send Detroit a 2024 and 2025 sixth-round selection, per ESPN’s Jenna Laine.
One season remains on Davis’ second Bucs contract, which he agreed to during the 2022 legal tampering period. Coming up recently as a trade chip, Davis will help out a Lions team that experienced injury- and performance-related issues in coverage last year.
Davis will bring plenty of starting experience to Detroit, with the former second-round pick having started 75 of his 76 regular-season games for Tampa. The defensive back hasn’t been able to make it through a full regular-season unscathed, although he has been on the field for nine postseason games over the past four seasons.
The 27-year-old got into 12 games this past year, finishing with 52 tackles and a pair of interceptions. He also compiled another 11 stops in two postseason games. Pro Football Focus ended up ranking Davis only 68th among 127 qualifying cornerbacks, although the site has never been particularly fond of his performance (Davis peaked as the 21st cornerback in 2021).
Davis inked a three-year, $45MM deal with the Buccaneers in 2022. He’ll count for about $14.3MM against the cap in 2024 before hitting free agency next winter.
Probably a 5th Round pick?
Wow. Another injury prone corner. And gave up a 3rd Rd pick to get him. Btw this and the Davenport signing, I’m confused. Really hope BH has something bigger planned bc this ain’t enough. Especially with Minnesota, GB and Chicago all loading up on both sides of the ball.
Turning Hock into Laporta and Davis isn’t awful at all.
Hopefully it’s the Lions third round pick and not Minnesota’s..
I read they gave up ours for him.
Man I trust Brad Holmes but this sucks! This is not the beginning on FA that I was hoping for.
Think this is bad, look at what NYG gave up (lol) for Brian Burns
They also traded away Leonard Williams and basically got the same thing in return for what they gave up for Burns.
Hope CD3 does well, but for those that don’t watch the Bucs. He gets injured almost every other game whether concussion, shoulder, or hamstring. He will still tough it out though but still gets dinged up.
Hands aren’t the best he has dropped picks that hit him dead in hands. Good technical CB though.
Davis sucked since receiving that last extension. It needed to happen
Lions fans were thinking Burns and Snead, and they come limping to the table with Davenport and Davis. I trust in Holmes and Campbell but this is not the big splash most of us Lions fans were hoping for.
It’s hilarious to me that Lions fans even thought Holmes would all of a sudden go “big” in free agency when he’s never done so AND flat out told ppl multiple times in the last 2 months they weren’t going to be making “splashes”.
This is the Holmes way. It’s all about draft and re-sign the pillars while supplementing with capable depth, backups and fringe starters.
And I’d say it’s worked pretty well considering where the Lions were and where they are now in barely 3 offseasons.
Fair enough. However, he also said acquiring a #1 cornerback was a top priority this off-season. Signing an injury-prone Davis doesn’t strike me as much of an upgrade. It’s still early though. Maybe he has something else cooking at cornerback.
He never used the words “#1 CB”. That’s fan-invented.
He’s brought in two starting caliber CBs for a total of what Sneed would cost per year, and lost a 3rd instead of a 1st that Sneed would have taken.
Holmes has proven he knows how to identify talent and build a team. The Lions are not the Cowboys or Eagles who chase stars and headlines.
