Joshua Dobbs has found a new home. The free agent quarterback is signing with the 49ers, agent Mike McCartney announced.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Dobbs will be signing a one-year deal that includes $2.25MM in guaranteed money. The quarterback can also earn $750K via per-game roster bonuses.
It’s been a busy 12 months for the seven-year veteran. After re-joining the Browns last offseason, he was traded to the Cardinals during the preseason to serve as a fill-in for Kyler Murray. After going 1-7 in his eight starts, Dobbs was dealt to the Vikings to replace the injured Kirk Cousins.
The 29-year-old had some ups and downs during his brief stint in Minnesota. He started his stint with two-straight wins, including a debut where he tossed two touchdowns and scored another on the ground. The Vikings lost his next two starts, including a Week 12 loss to the Bears where Dobbs tossed four interceptions. He was benched for Nick Mullens during the team’s Week 13 win over the Raiders and didn’t see the field again in 2023.
Dobbs ultimately finished the campaign having completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He added another 421 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. The former fourth-round pick only had two career starts heading into the 2023 season.
With Sam Darnold now in Minnesota, the 49ers have been in the market for some QB depth behind Brock Purdy. Dobbs will likely compete with Brandon Allen to be San Francisco’s QB2 to begin the 2024 campaign.
More paychecks. Not a bad gig. Although I can see Niners drafting another QB in day 3
Loved this kid when he was rolling
I think he’s a much better depth option than guys like Easton Stick and Nathan Peterman who haven’t done anything.
Wish the Steelers would have brought him in at QB3 to help fields. He has a great QB mind – Ben would often do his pregame prep with Dobbs
Was hoping so too. Guessing he wants to compete for qb 2 vs being a lock to be 3rd string in Pittsburgh
Sometimes, intelligence can hinder physical performance.
Too Much Thought and Analysis.
Better to just Execute.
And have that “Winner Grit” that elevates those around him.
With all of the activity taking place in the off season quarterback carousel could you possibly put together a team by team recap that contains:
1). A team by team summary of who is each teams current rostered quarterbacks in order of the team’s current playing status with that organization.
2) Quarterback positional activity for each team since the end of the 2023-2024 season consisting of: trades (both additions and subtractions), jettisoned qbs allowed to reach free agency, free agents signed, as well as quarterbacks to be drafted in 2024.
3). A summary of each currently available free agent quarterbacks, which the last team that rostered them.
There has been so much activity – a summary would help to be aware of who is where.
I think building a room of 3-4 QBs is a good idea, especially with the emergency QB rule. After what the 49ers experienced the year before, they really should take advantage of it.
I’m a Jets’ fan. If no one is offering anything for Zach even by the end of the draft and the Jets are on the hook for his salary anyway, they should carry him at least into camp to show other teams.
The Jets don’t have a choice now but to keep Zach through camp or cut him and eat the rest of his salary. When the team’s owner comes out and publicly states that the Jets didn’t have a backup QB (Wilson) last season, he kind of handcuffed his GM trying to make a deal for him! I’m sure Joe Douglas is thrilled with this situation.
So, Minn and SF basically “traded” their backup QBs for each other.
I think that I’m one of the apparent few who is down on Dobbs. I don’t think that he offers much upside as a passer, and doesn’t have the running capability to offset his hesitancy and inaccuracy throwing the ball.
With that said, he does perform much better when the running game is strong (as most quarterbacks do). This was especially evident in Arizona. The Broncos game, for example, saw Dobbs collapse in the second half as the rushing attack dried up after Denver came back, and Dobbs was forced to throw. In the first half, piggybacking off a strong inside running game, he excelled. Dobbs is a high character player, and is obviously very intelligent. I just don’t see enough arm talent to make a decent quarterback. Dobbs is easy to root for, and hard to watch.
